I have a kid in my group who wanted to play as a Grung after messing around on Hero Forge one day. He's low-key been the strongest member of the group playing a Swarmkeeper Ranger whose swarm resembles tadpoles, and he loves to make use of basically every racial feature he has, like jumping and climbing. I've been delighted at how much fun he's had with it and how distinctive a Grung can be.

Reminder about the Dhampir: the bite attack counts as a simple natural weapon, not an unarmed strike. Meaning, it can be a Monk weapon, and scale up its damage die with Monk levels, or the fun part: you can Smite with it. Also, I'm fairly certain it can become your Hex Weapon as a Hexblade Warlock. Enjoy!

I just happened to have the idea and loved it so much I ran with it. Also I came up with a reborn character but haven't had a chance to play them as of yet. Simply put they're a bard and put the 'death' into death metal, the basic backstory idea was they woke up in a cemetry along with a couple others and started an undead band until a cleric saw them and jumped the gun with destroy undead, which only he survived, talked to and explained to the cleric (who then felt really bad about the whole misunderstanding). He is now on a journey to form a new band.

The party was on a search and rescue mission, so after fighting the Kenku, we got one to surrender, and I had the pleasure of realizing that Mind Link - by the wording of the ability - would allow me to bypass the Kenku's inability to speak outside of mimicry to have a proper conversation through telepathy. You didn’t talk about it but I fell in love with shifter most recently. They used to only be able to shift once per short rest which was really situational, but now it’s tied to proficiency per long rest. One specific interaction is the Wildhunt shifter + Barbarian, while shifted no attack within 30 feet of you can benefit from advantage; so essentially if there aren’t ranged combatants you get reckless attack with no drawbacks 👍🏼

Another great way for wild hunt is ranged martials or spellcasters combined with the athlete feat. Kite them and go prone at the end of your turn, if they can't catch up, they get disadvantage, if they can catch up they don't get advantage. For ranged martials I reccomend rangers with Zephyr strike (if you can somehow get it Ashardalons stride or Kinetic jaunt or for gishes like bladesingers, swords/valor bards, armorer/battle smith, eldritch knight or arcane trickster) or echo knight for a free disengage, while only spending 5ft to get back up.

The Ancestral Legacy lineage stuff like replacing existing character traits and the movespeeds are only for when the template is applied to an existing character, it even states directly in the ancestral legacy portion "If you don't keep any of those elements or you choose this lineage at character creation, you gain proficiency in two skills of your choice." If you pick the Reborn at character creation, all you get is 2 free skill proficiencies, still pretty decent. Only way to be a flying Reborn is if you pick a flying race at creation and then later your DM allows you to become reborn

I was about to comment that being a Grung is pretty awesome, I used my secretion of poison to make poison weapons such as sack of poison, poison smoke when burning it (teas a stretch), antidotes, and poison tipped weapons such as spears, javelins, daggers, arrows, etc. Loved playing it and will definitely play more similar characters.

Fun trick with damphir: If you take the spell alter self (and your DM approves this) You can buff your bite attack to 1d6. in addition, if you can add additional damage to the attack (like Giants Might on Rune Carver for example, it could stack with the bite damage. So potentially, you could have a damphir with a bonus 2d6 + Con damage, healing or buffing yourself. (I do this maybe too often at my table)

I had an idea for a Grung Way of the Shadows monk named Gren. In order to counter his need to submerge himself, he would carry a gord on his back full of water that he could sleep or meditate in. That way he got his much needed hydration and also fun role play tidbits. Like having party members knock on the gord to wake him up. lol

Nothing like high jumping in an allyway, sticking to the wall and jump attacking someone for 1d6 + 2d4 (shortsword+grunge poison) and/or damage, 2d8 (poisoner feat poison, you have a free supply of poisonin your skin) and then punching them for the chance to give them the poisoned condition

A neat thing with dhampir monks is that their bite can be used as a monk weapon. Technically, you still have to use Con for the attacks since the martial arts feature allows Dex instead of Strength. If you’re lucky, maybe your DM would let you use Dex. The real benefit, however, is that your bite will increase with your martial arts die. So, either more healing or higher bonus potential as you grow in levels. Plus, who doesn’t want to stunning strike after a chomp?

  • @banjoskeleton8399

Better yet, kensei monks can use some (but not all) of their features to make the bite even better. Add a martial arts die to the bite, make it a magical +3, and you've got a pretty nice attack which then gives pretty big healing/bonus to a check.

I once played a Grung Druid. My brother, who was DMing at the time, was a bit iffy on the idea because he couldn't find any official source for them. But he allowed it. Basically he ran a challenge tower where each floor was randomly generated, with a different set of enemies for each of them. Well we got to a vampire, and I had this bright idea where my brother's friend threw a bag of bone meal, and use a fire spell (I forgot which) on it. Suffice to say Dale's Pseudo Fireball is now banned from our table.

One of my favorite grung builds I call Death Hug. Besically, have a really high strength score, then get a breastplate (or any other sleeveless piece of armor), then attach spikes to the chest. then, before each fight, coat each spike with you poison. then, when in a battle, bear hug an enemy. when you do so, they take the poison damage from the spikes, and since they are in contact with your arms, they get poisoned, and since they are poisoned, that makes them have disadvantage on the check to escape the grapple. Then, your allies can easily come over and attack the enemy, who cant run away because they are being grappled.

I had made them homebrew along with my DM, before the Grung had an official race stat block in 5e, so the poison coating had instead a weaker version of that Grung species’ poison was. I had chosen the gold I believe, because I thought it was cool, and not even realizing it had charming poison.

3:22 I went þo check and the first trait for any lineage says: Ancestral Legacy. If you replace a race with this lineage, you can keep the following elements of that race: any skill proficiencies you gained from it and any climbing, flying, or swimming speed you gained from it. If you don't keep any of those elements or you choose this lineage at character creation, you gain proficiency in two skills of your choice. Important part: If you choose this lineage at character creation, you gain proficency in two skill So no, you can not start the game as flying reborn
