Sage Advice Compendium overrides any tweets, as stated in the SAC itself at the beginning. Shield Master doesn't work exactly as stated in the video. "The Shield Master feat lets you shove someone as a bonus action if you take the Attack action. Can you take that bonus action before the Attack action? No. The bonus action provided by the Shield Master feat has a precondition: that you take the Attack action on your turn. Intending to take that action isn’t sufficient; you must actually take it before you can take the bonus action. During your turn, you do get to decide when to take the bonus action after you’ve taken the Attack action. This sort of if-then setup appears in many of the game’s rules. The “if” must be satisfied before the “then” comes into play."

I've got a rules question I've not been able to find an official answer to, and wondered if you could help. I'm playing a multi-class warlock fighter, with the Ruin-Knight subclass. I've employed my Giant's Might, but well before the end of the duration, I've found being my normal size would be highly beneficial. My DM, after reading the ability, ruled that it can not be ended early. My question then is: Is there any official way to end the Giant's Might size increase early, and if so, how (action, bonus action, interaction)?

@@DrBodyshot No, that is not how spells like Fireball or lightning bolt work. Fireball targets an area, not a creature. Lightning bolt targets a direction, not a creature. This applies to most similar AOE spells, which just don't get affected by this. As per RAW, the spell specifically has to "target only you" and require a dex save. Meaning it must be a targeted effect, it can only target you, and it has to prompt a dex save. So in regards to player spells, that list is very small and a chunk of it is very low level spells or cantrips. On a bright note, it does technically apply to disintegrate. Also, it does leave room in the wording that allows it to apply to single-target monster spell affects. But it's still not a feature that should be taken seriously when considering the feat. But considering the nature of the other effects, it basically comes down to if you care about a bonus action shove to prone enemies for allies or bargain brand Evasion.

Bonus if you picked up the Faceless back ground, as a perma-shifter, as you can still be someone the party may recognize, and when in town, you can shift into anyone who's seen as a non-threat and waltz right into the castle when disguised as one of the dozens of butlers, scullery maids, and fire keepers that keep the royal bum warm on a cold morning. I bet you can hear battle plans one minute, change your appearance for when the commander asks for a someone to archive the battle plans, and whoops, your in possession of critical intelligence you can then sell to another person...

There are six choices for at will spells with eldritch adept; Disguise Self, Silent Image, Detect Magic, Speak with Animals, and self-cast Mage Armor or False Life. The two mentioned, disguise self (mask of many faces) and Silent Image (misty visions) are quietly among the best abilities in the entire game, they just don't apply to combat most of the time so people sleep on them. Two of the remaining are typically bad-Detect Magic is mediocre because you can ritual cast it most of the time, and Speak with Animals is typically a party trick. That leaves Armor of Shadows to self-cast mage armor. This is highly situational-but if you're an abjuration wizard the ability means you effectively have a D10 hit dice, which you can recharge for free in a minute. See, abjuration wizards have a pool of arcane ward HP which equals 2xtheir level+INT, which it is slowly recharged when they cast 1st level or higher abjuration spells. Normally this means it's a sharply limited pool of HP (albeit one that recharges consistently in combat with spellcasters), but at-will mage armor makes it a spammable source of HP out of combat too. This only works with one class, although others might have similar ways to exploit casting an abjuration spell I don't know of, but it's a *huge* buff to the class. It's also quite thematic-the Wizard is making deals for Power, and managing to exploit them for the maximum return. The last is Fiendish Vigor for False-life at will. This is, quite simply, 8 temporary hit points before every combat. If your party does not use Temp HP very much, it's absurdly good- and even if they do (temp HP don't stack) it's strong because you can recharge you temp HP so easily during off-turns. This is surprisingly common, and having a spammable buff for those situations adds up a lot over the campaign.

6:35 actually, I'd argue that at from about level six or below or so, the fighter with a healer feat is actually a better healer than the cleric. A cleric at this level would need to expend all their spell slots pretty much to heal a party of 5 as much as the feat gives pretty much for free. That cleric now has basically no offense options left, but the fighter is still a level 6 fighter (Feats aren't free, but hey, look at that, they got an extra ASI at 6 for being a fighter).

Edit: so I just read a comment mentioning stars druid in a healer build, and so I reread stars druid, and now I'm on the fence about whether a 3-level dip in stars or dreams druid would be the best for the cleric. On the one hand, 3 d6s of healing *without spell slots* is pretty good. On the other, 1d8 + wis. *after every cast of a healing spell* (while in Chalice form, which lasts up to 20 minutes, if both uses are used) is also really good. As I am writing this, I think I have come to the conclusion that the stars druid is better. @@Atma_Weapon In that regard it comes again to the wording. So for you to be able to push someone in the air with it must fulfill the requirement that it is either 5 feet towards or 5 feet away for you. With that ruling straight up and straight down my move the creature by 5 fee,t but it wouldn't move the creature away. The fun part comes when we look at diagonal movement. The feat doesn't forbid it, infact it doesn't mention it at all. So taking this into account you could say that if a creature of the size small and below stands next to a creature of size normal and above would, it would be allowed push that creature diagonally up since it would fulfill the 5 feet away requirement. Same could be said if the user stand in a hole from a recent mold earth spell and the target stands next to it and therefore above it

It also adds depth to the characters and finding out about enemies capabilities becomes so much more rewarding if you cant metagame the monsters and have to actually gather intel.

Some warnings: Shieldmaster - check with your DM that you can use the bonus action before your attack. Some DM's require you to attack first, and that way the feat is worthless. Eldritch Adept - most uses are much worse than what you can get in another way (E.g. the 2 proficiencies are just flat out worse than Skilled or Skill Expert). The only ones that really are unique and good enough to be worth taking are Devil Sight (if your party has access to magical darkness) and Mask or Many Faces (this basically turns you into a Changeling). As a positive notion: Eldritch Adept is really strong if you are already a Warlock.

Also getting up still costs the creature 50% movement speed, so you could make a case about it being useful for getting away. You could even use it to get an ally next to you out of a pickle, because you can use that shove action against a different creature. They can't decide to fail the contest, but they can decide to roll the lower skill check. If it's only one enemy, you could of course just shove that one away.

  • @gameraven13

    @gameraven13

    2 жыл бұрын

You actually can't get ANYTHING with a prerequisite, not even the ones that just require you know Eldritch Blast, which you could pick up through other feats. Per Eldritch Adept "If the invocation has a preqrequisite, you can choose that invocation only if you're a warlock and only if you meet the prerequisite." So, the only invocations you can pick up as a non warlock are the ones that have no prerequisite at all. That list is: - Armor of Shadows (mage armor on yourself at will) - Beast Speech (speak with animals at will) - Beguiling Influence (Deception and Persuasion proficiency) - Devil's Sight (see in magical and nonmagical darkness 120 ft) - Eldritch Mind (adv on con saves to maintain concentration) - Eldritch Sight (detect magic at will) - Eyes of the Rune Keeper (read all writing) - Fiendish Vigor (false life on yourself at will as a 1st level spell) - Gaze of Two Minds (perceive through another willing humanoid's senses until the end of your next turn) - Mask of Many Faces (disguise self at will) - Misty Visions (silent image at will) - Thief of Five Fates (technically you can take this one, but it's pointless as a non warlock, since you can cast bane once using a warlock spell slot once per long rest, so if you don't have warlock slots, it's useless) That's it. That's ALL the options Eldritch Adept can possibly give you. Half of those are just "here's a 1st level spell you can cast like a cantrip, but without material components", one of them is useless, and the other 5 are just basic utility. To be fair, though, the only invocations that the wording of Eldritch Adept locks you out of are Agonizing Blast, Eldritch Spear, Grasp of Hadar, Lance of Lethargy, and Repelling Blast. All of those deal with Eldritch Blast, though, so like. If you REALLY wanted to use another feat to pick up EB, and the ability to pick ONE modification to it, a DM would probably be lenient enough to let you. 2 feats to get a boosted EB on a non warlock class doesn't seem terribly OP, especially since the feats that would let you get EB require you pick from the warlock spell list and use Cha, so Bard, Paladin, Sorcerer are really the only other candidates if you're min/maxing.

If you're not a warlock, Devil's Sight, Beast Speech, Eldritch Mind (but just take War Caster instead), Eldritch Sight, Mask of Many Faces, or Misty Visions (basically any of the "cast X at-will" stuff) are the only good options. Eyes of the Runekeeper in a more RP/political/mystery-focused campaign is also fun. Same deal as a standard warlock invocation: don't take stuff that just adds a spell to your known spells and definitely don't take stuff that is objectively worse than another readily available option (Eldritch Mind via feat vs. War Caster, since War Caster is Eldritch Mind + no-free-hand-needed-for-somatic-components + spell as opportunity attack).

Honestly I feel like even if it's a little unbalanced, every race should get a level 1 feat, cause most feats suit a history with your character. For example, I took the healer's feat, and my lawful good wizard necromancer was not only an undertaker, but also a trained physician, ended up dressing him as a plague doctor to suit the scary powers and medical expertise :p Of course, an inspiring leader could make someone with the soldier background into a battlefield commander, the tavern brawler would be great for a drunken barbarian, and the actor feat could mean the PC's actually a successful play actor or actress in their backstory, it opens up a lot of potential.

"A medium or smaller creature can ride your back if you allow it" This means that a UA centaur (size medium) can have a centaur ride it's back, and they can have a centaur ride their back, and this tower can go on in theory forever as long as the every centaur can carry the weight of all centaur's above it, which becomes easier with Equine Build's primary feature which allows you to count as large to determine carry weight, so a giant barbarian centaur can drag 5760lb's or 9 centaurs and 300lbs of gear. (mpmm actually lowered the base weight of a centaur to 500 instead of 600 so you could argue they can carry 11 centaurs and 260 lbs of gear. ) everyone will want to stack strength, but a handful of barbarians on the bottom, some healing words sprinkled in. and you can make a damage line, where one attack triggers a conga line of mounted combatant's forcing and attack to target them instead of their mount followed by the mounts with sentinel to attack an enemy who attacked someone who wasn't them. obviously most DM's are not going to let the full power of the centower just run free, but the throwing the megazord moment at a BBEG will 100% get your DM to force a break while they figure out what the fuck is going on.

"Darkness with Eldritch Adept makes most of spellcasting enemies" My perspective may be skewed, because I basically exclusively Play high-level D&D, so to me it actually doesn't work that way, with most actually scary foes having Truesight, or another way of just cancelling the Darkness

Shield master makes you take no damage when you should take half damage on a successful dex save, but it buffs your dex save only when the hit is aimed only at you. That, plus the fact that it doesn't half full damage, plus you having to attack BEFORE shoving, makes it so much less powerful than how it would seem on first sight

My DM a couple of years ago for Christmas held a level 20 one shot. I had never played a magic caster before and figured this would be a good way to try without being tied to a character for the long term, so I ran a War Cleric. I took Shield Master and War Caster as feats, and let me tell you that character was a BEAST. Heavily armored front line tank with healing and crowd control spells, was so much fun.

Shield Master is actually fairly worthless when you consider Crawford's revised ruling (which is actually in the Sage Advice Compendium) and the fact that its save bonus only works against effects that can only target you (i.e no Fireball, Dragon Breath, etc.)

I'm currently playing a Rogue / Wizard hybrid in my game. I'm also using a homebrew subclass for my Wizard called School Of Dimensionalism. (I'll post it in a reply once I leave work and get back to my computer). At Wizard Level 10, the subclass allows you to essentially enter the Astral plane for a brief time, allowing you to be unseen, and for your opponents not to be able to use attack of opportunity on you. The downside? Movement within the Astral Plane counts as difficult terrain. See where I'm going with this? As long as you have the Mobile feet,, If you pick up Haste, use that, and Dash with your main action, Haste action, and Bonus action, You can move 480 feet, completely unimpeeded while being unseen, and without your opponents being able to do anything! All in 6 seconds during combat! Granted, you have to be level 11 minimum to pull this off, but still. Point of all this? I like the Mobile feet. 🙂

I'm surprised you didn't mention how for Aberrant Dragonmark, the 1st level spell comes back after a short rest, rather than a long rest. Also, how casting the spell also lets you gain temp HP or deal damage to a random creature. As for Shield Master, it has "officially" had all three interpretations (shove before attacking, shove after one attack, shove after all attacks). I agree that RAW you can shove first.

a very powerful combo I did once was shield master and grappler on a fighter and use the bonus action to shove the creature prone, then you use the grapple action which is considered an attack, so you pin them down on the ground, now they have disadvantage to escape, disadvantage on attacks against you and you gain advantage on them until they die, although it is only good against Large and smaller creature.

I think that, if things are going to change more with the upcoming release, then line of sight should become a spell component, just like verbal, somatic, and material components. This would allow both players and DMs the ability to check quickly without having to read the description on if the spell requires line of sight/eye contact to cast the spell.

Ran an Artificer in a level 1 to 6 campaign who was GOING to be an Alchemist, but I changed my mind at level 3 to become an Armorer instead. 18 Intelligence was deffinately enough (we always run point buy so I was 8/14/14/16/10/12), but with Magic Missile, support cantrips & a teammate grappling people so my gauntlets having an advantage I felt GREAT. I started off Variant Human with the Healer feat (level 1 to 6, seemed smart) & LOVED the feat. Ran around like a madman with 21 AC, mirror image & all the revivals EVER. It was amazing.

Shield Master applies to anyone with shield proficiency in my homebrew setting. There are three classes of shield ranging from 1 to 3 AC (which applies to DEX Saves), but a STR requirement for Heavy shields. The size class determines your damage dice. Heavy shields require your standard action to equip; Medium, a bonus action or your action; Light, your free item interaction, bonus action, or action. Light shields can be easily Thrown. Heavy and Light are also weapon properties. And these shields add cover to creatures behind you for the purposes of weapon attacks (but if they’re prone, you have to go prone to grant the entire cover bonus). It’s worked out so far. Some players don’t use shields, one dragonborn drummer bard uses two shields (only one at a time grants AC though), and non-magic shields tend to be specifically targeted by powerful foes. And one player got a bit of Aberrant Dragonmark as a reward for delving deep into lore and artificer self-education. Maybe one day there’ll be a shield wall to hold the entrance to a Life Forge?

At 0:25 I imagine it's like getting that certification in Boy Scouts that says you know how to use a knife properly. Kind of like a thing on your character sheet that makes it impossible for a DM to say you shove, but it makes you clumsy, you drop your sword & stab yourself in the foot. ;)
