Top 5 Deer Habitat Improvement Time Wasters

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

When attempting to improve deer habitat, the amount of activities you can waste your time on are endless. However, who has time to waste? I sure don't! I personally expect results with anything and everything I do. While this list isn't complete, here are some of the most common time wasters that I see on a yearly basis while visiting deer habitat and hunting clients across the country. Make sure to avoid these time-sucking deer habitat improvements that rarely if ever, equal a quality return of success for the effort.
If you want to make sure you are creating the best deer habitat improvements, make sure to check out my lineup of deer habitat strategy web classes:

I only have 10 acres & I decided to hinge cut my property border edge that provided a thick horizontal fence of poplar trees..... The deer love it and they pretty much just sit on my property during hunting season. Everything else is what naturally grows in & around an old creek bottom / beaver pond...

A 2 acre block of switchgrass on old 25 acre property was a game changer. Put strips of clover through it and a bigger plot adjacent. Took about 2 years to really start holding deer. All the neighborhood was open ag lands with small amounts of cover. With brown it’s down mentality.. the owner last year killed a 140 that is unheard of there. He lived in that cover.

Jeff, I grew up hunting northern Wisconsin cedar swamps, tag alders, and easy to read draws and funnels. I struggled on our farm land at home due to flat lands, minimal edges, and no funnels. Well, through tree planting, logging practices, and food plot location, and a HUGE help from all of your videos, this property that was so hard to hunt 20 years ago is better than I could ever have dreamed. Thank you for all of your how to videos. There was a time where I had given up because I had no idea how to hunt this property or what to do to improve it. You're a blessing man!

We have thick aspen on all 40 acres, did some small clear cuts last year in prep for food plots. Also did some 4 ft wide walking trails like you suggested in other videos. The deer seem to be loving it so far. Thanks for the guidance, I have the most fun just rehabilating the habitat from the years of chip cutting.

I have picked up a lot of beneficial ideas from you for sure! Thank you! Cover is key! Hunting pressure is another factor! Food plots are the only thing i lack! My best friends family were the biggest logging operation in my state so i had access to excellent forest management! You need sunlight to grow underbrush! My land goes up and then flattens out then steep then flattens out again! Travel corridors are a must! Great video! Yes mock scrapes you taught me about those! I have many vines saved already to put up soon! Thanks!

I was on a 160ac field in Illinois planted in pollinator. The edge of that field..not one scrape. But in the nearby strip mine spoils there was great sign. In the past I planted 17 thousand loblolly pines in rows. At same time I planted switch and did a select cut on 40 ac mature timber. I took a farm that was say a 4 hunting wise and turned it into an 8. In those pines I once missed a 190 inch nt. I was in a stand not 8 feet off the ground. I hunted a pine thicket in camp Ripley years ago in Minnesota that was loaded with good bucks. I love young pines and grass. Getting ready to list my turnkey Ohio farm and begin the process again.

Some cover the pallets with tar paper or something waterproof. A good house should be about 10-15 feet and 5-6 feet high and have enough open space at the base for entrance and exit. There is a lot of cattails on the west side by the creek holding pheasants and the east side is lower ground (wet) with some mature trees but mostly short trees with short brushy grassy stuff and a little over 1 acre food plot in the middle. It is a bit of a challenge to find trees big enough to hang a stand in. Can't see more then 40-50 yards. There is some small openings in the thick stuff. So how do I add more food to the mix. Sounds like they’re migrating to your property for night feeding. You probably don’t have adequate bedding areas to keep them bedded down close by for day feedings. Your plots might also be in the wide open and not screened in with switch or tall grass. Deer like to feel secure and protected when feeding.
