Love, love, love my 2020 CX5 Signature. It is a blast to drive and the interior is a cut above. Well done, Mazda!
awesome review guys....gotta say for interior and comfort Nissan Rogue takes it for me....i will have faith that the new engine surprises us and passes with flying colors ..... love the Platinum version so much i ordered one.... took 4 of the 5 other ones for test drives and i was drawn to the Nissan....cheers all from Alberta
Mazda CX 5 signature turbo is by far the best choice. I drove all the ones you Reviewed. There’s no comparison in refinement, fit and finish of the interior, interiors by far the quietest. Turbo engine quick/ powerful and fun to drive. Just purchased a 2023 signature!!
My wife bought a CRV Hybrid a couple of months ago, she loves it. I bought a Rav 4 XLE 2 weeks ago. My Wife gave up a 2019 X3 AWD model and I gave up 2018 X1 AWD Xdrive. We totally love our new cars and do not miss the BMWs at all. Your video is very cool and we will subscribe and watch you often
Recently bought a gently used 2021 Mazda CX5 Grand Touring. Very pleased with it so far. Test drove the new CRVs and RAV4s too, but preferred the Mazda.
Great review. Keep up the good work. I have to admit I am a Honda or Toyota guy. I moved to Central Ontario in 2018 from the GTA. I knew I was going to be travelling back and forth quite a bit so I wanted a compact suv. I leased a 2018 Honda CRV as the previous generation RAV4 was underpowered with 160hp and getting long in the tooth. Wouldn’t even consider it. I was very happy with the CRV size and fuel mileage. Before the lease was up the dealer called me and asked if I wanted a 2021 model for a payment about $90 less and nothing down. It was September. I went to try the new (in 2019) RAV4 but didn’t like the interior. Zack described it well, “feels industrial”! For that reason and the great price I took the 2021 CRV and am very happy with it. On the hiway I checked it and it got 37mpg, imperial gallons. I didn’t believe it. Checked it 3 times. Same result. Add some in town driving and that number is just over 30 but very good for a 4 wheel drive vehicle that size. Also resale and reliability of Honda and Toyota vehicles can’t be beat.
Great video as always! Straight and to the point. As for my personal choices among these 5, I would say the Subaru Forester is up there near the top, followed by the Kia. The things I don't like about the Subaru are it's Plain Jane looks which IMO are very out of date, as well as the lack of a turbo engine option. The Kia has a lot going for it, but the styling is maybe too "exciting" with all those angles and funky front end. The Rav 4's styling reminds me of a military-style cap, although the fuel economy is great. I'm not too thrilled with the Honda or Mazda options, but I'm sure they are fine options. Thanks again for another great video!
This was EXTREMELY helpful for deciding on our next family car! Thank you for the great review!

Love my 2022 Rav4 Limited. My favorite. Love your reviews.
Another nice review guys. You stated that the CX5 warranty was 3 years and 60,000 kms. My 2021 CX5 ( and every Mazda sold in Canada since 2015 ) has a warranty of unlimited kilometers for 3 years bumper to bumper and 5 years unlimited kilometers for Powertrain warranty. Their confidence in offering an unlimited km warranty ( which no other manufacturer in Canada does ) must mean they have built a quality product. So far in my opinion , I agree.

Thanks again for honesty and feedback and as a result the CX-5 is falling behind in my search. Better to learn now that after argeeing to pay multi-years notes right! There more reviews I watch, the more important hybrid seems to be to me and even better with an plug-in option.

Another great top-5 review, Andrea and Zack, thank you! Interestingly, when I was in the market for a new car a few months and decided on an SUV, I went with the Forester over the other 2 that I liked most, the RAV4 and Tuscon. And, my decision was based on all of the strengths that you two had highlighted in your review of the Forester PLUS based on my very positive experience of owning a 1984 Subaru Hatchback with its underpowered 1600cc engine but which got up to 42 MPG highway, its 4-speed transmission, reliability, excellent FWD performance even in winter skiing weather in So. and No. California mountains, and because of Subaru's long-time sponsorship of the U.S. Ski Team. So, my Forester purchase was also an emotional one, and based on what I see in Forester social media groups, both the logical and emotional reasons for buying/owning a Forester are extremely high, with so many personal accounts of owning Foresters for over 200,000 AND 300,000 miles, and of many enthusiasts' modifications of their Foresters to make them even more off-road capable.

Very informative and useful. Some mention of long-term ownership costs and reliability would have been useful and many dealers are adding mark-ups to the MRSP, so the prices may not be realistic. How about a video about obtaining a good price for a new car in Canada.

As someone who wouldn't buy a hybrid or CVT-containing vehicle on a bet, I appreciate the "gas-only" approach to this review. For me, like Andrea, there is only one winner here and that's the Mazda CX-5. I've owned a few luxury compact SUVs in my day, but it's getting harder and harder to justify their $10--15K premium over this Mazda. Great review as always, you two!!

Couldn't agree more. I hated the CVT on my Altima and swore I'd never buy another. The CX-5 turbo drivetrain is so smooth and predictable with just the right kind of growl. I was going to buy my first luxury SUV for my retirement but as you said, the CX-5 is much less expensive and the line between it and more expensive models gets very blurry.
Great summary of all the strengths and…not so much strengths…lol…of these cars. All but the Kia and Subaru have screens that look like they were added to the dash as an after thought…like hey, let’s throw an iPad up there. They look horrible! Having our 4th and 5th subies in our driveway I will always toot their horn. Their approach to integrating the screen into the center stack looks so much cleaner and sleek…and it’s easy to use. My wife test drove both the new forester and outback and chose the forester for all the reasons you gave. Nothing like a Subaru with a good set of snows in the winter.
We picked Rav4 all the reasons you mentioned. Traded in our 10 year old Camry. As retirees Rav4 easier to get in & out of & hatch a real plus for loading & unloading items. 👍😎🇨🇦
Thank you for the video choice of cars I think some of them are very reliable and some of them on this list are very questionable. Anyways it gives you an idea of price points I love how you put what the car cost the most important things are mainly there so thanks for your videos.😊
I own a cx-5…this car is awesome. I do wish it was a touchscreen & the backseat can be a little tight. I’m 5’11 but anyone that sits behind me doesn’t complain too much. Outside of those issues, the cargo space is just fine. Smaller than others but still adequate. I’d definitely recommend it.

I just bought a new 2022 Mazda CX-5 Premium Trim which now has 2000 miles on it. It has the leather interior. When I first got it I thought the seats were quite firm but certainly not uncomfortable. However, I can say that even with just 2,000 miles on it the seats break in after you use them and are now quite comfortable and supportive even on long drives.

I also bought a 2022 Mazda CX-5 Sports Design (non-turbo) in Canada earlier this February, coming from a 2018 lower trim car, I thoroughly enjoyed all the additional driver assistance tech (traffic assist, adaptive cruise control, brake hold, vented seats). The seats were better post 2022 vs. 2021 that I seat on over the test drive. I wish I had a turbo though.
Just bought a KIA Sportage X-Line. Really great ride and sharp looking car. A bit short on power (won't win any races, but it goes when needed) and gas mileage, but the features more then make up for it. A little leery on KIA (cause I just don't know too much about them), but got some good responses from some people that own one. We shall see.
Can’t wait for the luxury review like this🥰
very honest review/list, cheers V!
Hi! I think a better way to present top picks is that, you treat gas/hybrid/phev of a car as 3 entries and do a top 10 or 15 picks.
I own a 21 Forester Sport and it's a fantastic vehicle. PROS: Amazing in the snow - sure-footed but allows you to have some fun getting the tail out - even with all-weather tires it handles deep snow very nicely. Comfort and visibility are great. Safety features are solid and mostly unobtrusive. It does get great mileage if you're not lead-footed. The big, not-quite panoramic sunroof that opens ALL THE WAY. It's on-road and offroad manners and ride are superb and steering is quick and light, if a little numb. And, unlike some, I do think it's a very handsome vehicle, it's sculpted, long snout and chunky 'wing' on the tailgate give it a great look. While the CVT does take a little getting used to, it's a fantastic transmission that seems to always know where to be, except sometimes at very-low speeds - I wish it would actually hold in it's power-band when accelerating rather than simulating shifts - it would likely be quicker. And, while it does get a little loud at higher revs, I find the sound more pleasing than that of the RAV4 which seems to be straining more. The Harmon Kardon 9 speaker stereo is very nice. Remote start via an app on your phone is a nice bonus if you opt for it - though being able to turn on the AC no matter what temp you set would be a nice addition. CONS: It could use a little more power, but I never feel like it's really lacking. The auto-stop start defaulting to ON each time you start the car is annoying, though can easily be fixed with a plug and play part for about 100 bucks. The bin in front of the shifter is too small for larger phones, which is an issue if you use the wired Android Auto or Car Play - I bought a small pocket that sticks to the side of the console to slip my phone into. A heated steering wheel would be nice.

Hello from California. Great video. Many thanks. I am looking for something similar, but more in the luxury category. What I am looking for I guess is a challenge. I want an SUV that has some class, refinement, both interior and exterior (very little to no black plastic exterior trim). Either gas or hybrid, but no EV. The EV market has a LONG WAY TO GO in supporting drivers who make long drives outside of urban areas. The charging-station situation is 10 years away from being more "normal". I need something that works well on long freeway driving AND able to perform some level of off-road, as I sometimes have to drive on rough gravel / dirt / muddy / steep road to visit one of my daughters. Yet I don't want a robust heavy-duty SUV. BUT, also need to have plenty of interior width in the 2nd row of seats to comfortably seat 3 adults. And don't want a 3-row car. So, I guess I am somewhat picky.
I bought a 2023 CX-5 GT in Manitoba in October and it has 3 years and unlimited kilometers (not 60k) on the warranty
At some point, when you do your top 5's, can you include where they fall on the "most stolen" list. This makes a difference to me as to what I will dare to park in my driveway

I bought a 2023 Subaru Forester Limited about 2-1/2 months ago. Long story short, I was in an accident back in September, and my car at the time (2016 Subaru Impreza wagon) was deemed totaled. A guy claimed his steering jammed, causing him to cross the yellow line and hit my car at about 25 mph. We both walked away from the accident without injury. I just had a minor scratch, and a sore back and neck for a couple days. Given how well the Impreza protected me, I decided I wanted another Subaru, but something bigger, which is why I went with the Forester. I looked at the Crosstrek, but felt the outward visibility was better in the Forester.
Any reason why the new Mitsubishi Outlander Gas version with the 2.5 engine is not on the Honorable mention list, but the Rogue with 1.5 is?

Mazdas have great steering and speakers, and a lot of options for the mid-level model. The newest 6 speed automatic transmission works well and is reliable. Honda has gone to small turbos and cvt’s. So they just went the wrong way on durability. If you want long term durability the RAV4 is the suv you want. Bulletproof 4 Cylinder and conventional transmission. If you plan to keep it until it drops Toyota is the only one worth looking at.
Certainly Toyota Rav4 is the right choice. My 2003 Toyota 4Runner has over 370k miles and still running like new and low maintenance. Only replaced 4 tired and an engine oil change every 3k miles for the past 10 years. Spark plugs were changed over 10 years ago.

Forester for me but I'm in Vermont so I am biased. Basically if you live where it snows often and you want peace of mind that you will not go off the road, then it's forester all the way. If I lived somewhere that gets light snow, I would probably go with a rav4 for reliability, and cx5 as a runner up. Though I am disappointed that to get many common features on a rav you need to go a few packages higher than base. Like AWD... or heated seats... That's why I like forester. Subaru just doesn't have the same reliability reputation as Toyota but in all fairness no one does

I really like the approach you took for this review. Like you said, if you live in northern places and see a lot of snow the Subaru might be your best choice. Great review.

Subaru for life !!!
What are your thoughts on 2023 VW Tiguan ?
I had a Rav 4WD Limited and when I went to replace my 2011 Rav, I looked at another Rav and a Venza. The Rav was $700 more a year in insurance premiums and the Venza was $1K more. Both vehicles had horrible views and blind spots in the rear. My wife has an Outback and Subaru is superior with its AWD system. I ultimately chose the Forester Touring. The insurance went up only $300 a year and after dropping my 11 Rav, my insurance actually went down. We live in a very mountainous area of north central WA state where we get 5-6 feet of snow every winter. The Xmode in the Subaru costs thousands more in a Rav because you’ll have to get the TRD trim. If you properly maintain your Subie they’ll last for 300K+ miles. When I’m on the highway and heading into Wenatchee with snow covering the highway, Subaru’s are in the fast lane passing everyone else. The traction on all road conditions is wonderful. I would recommend a Forester, Outback or Crosstrek to anyone who lives in deep snowy areas.
Yeah for the Cx-5! Loving my 2023 Carbon Edition! Andrea you should get one!😉
I really want that Mazda cx 5 but I’m a bit afraid of whether it could fit a rear facing car seat. It seems that Mazda is the car I want most but maybe not the practical choice?
I really would like a limited Rav4, but zero availability. I need something with a Dynamic Torque Vectoring diff to help us in the snow here in SK.
Mazda CX-5 is the winner . We just bought a 2023 and dealer in Atlanta gave us 100.000 miles warranty .
Love my mazda cx5 ce!!
Thank you so very much! We currently own a CRV and a Forester…need a third vehicle and we are looking at CX-5…

Wow, what a great mix in your driveway with the addition of the CX-5 possibly. You will find when you want a sporty drive, you will turn to the CX-5 as your daily driver.

Sooooo lucky.
I thought u wont even mention Rogue 😅 been using it for 10 months 10k now, extra bit of power is doing wonders for me in highway. Very comfortable front driving seat, excellent mileage and very roomy trunk and rear. As you mentioned only dark side is, not sure about the reliability of the 1.5 turbo engine. Lets hope for the best.

Great video.. but here’s one thing that could have been included.. For Subaru Forester, you mentioned lack of turbo.. as an alternative, you could’ve suggested Subaru Outback, which is very similar to Forester in terms of features, reliability and space and offers turbo engine options.

Outback is a wagon.

Yeh, I noticed my Crosstrek is called a wagon too...I find it hard to tell the difference 🤔
The subaru forester is the best for me very dependable so good in snow and three driving modes
My partner has a 2023 Sportage SX Prestige it’s a good vehicle it’s a lot better then her old RAV4 I like the feel the Sportage has over my 2023 Sorento SX Prestige
Nowadays, its not just the driving characteristics, the exterior design and the interior comfort...the way the infotainment system works is also important. 2020 CX5 is very slow to connect. My wife already wants to get rid of hers because of this issue
This is still the most relevant topic and may need a re-visit. What’s your latest take on this topic? Gas only canada suv considering space, features and decent pickup
I think Subaru Outback is the top pick because if we put the looks aside the outback has everything. Touch screen heated and ventilated seats all wheel drive standard. It also comes with much more powerful engine which runs on regular gas.

The Outback is a great option, it's a very popular choice for many.
Hi what suv is that you guys are sitting in?
❤ the review!! Andrea’s voice is so awesome to listen and so pleasant!! 👍👍👍 CR-V I would end up buy it CX-5 my fav but not going to buy it…I don’t know why but it’s what it is Sportage. Looks good but not sure ready for this one. Forester doesn’t drive as nice…looks, meh RAV4 worst driving experience in this class and Toyota is worst at making cars that are drivers oriented. I can’t pay me to drive this car. Yuck!! Lol. Nope!!
Driven all but the Kia and we chose the Forester. Quieter. More comfortable. Techy enough. Smoothest. And quietest on the highway.
Do you offer special rates, or discounts for US?
They’re right about the rav4. It’s very comfortable - even over bumps it just seems to soak them up - but the engine is loud under anything more than moderate acceleration and it feels underpowered in eco mode.

You gotta be kidding, comfortable? You feel every bump, the suspension is very tight.

The RAV4 is very generic and won't offend too many people.
I just put down my deposit on a RAV4 gas model! I’d been considering a hybrid, but my 2012 VW just crapped out on me, and the wait for a gas model was 2 months and the hybrid was 8-16 months!

How much below the asking price of the dealer should you start out offering. I am upset that dealerships are charging 5 thousand over the MSRP because of low inventory and demand.
Do you ever try the Nissan Quashqai
As far as looks go. It's a no Brainer the 2022 or newer Tiguan. It's so much nicer than almost all vehicles mentioned. My neighbor has a 2023 KIA Sportage it is very nice

As far as looks go, the 2022 or newer Tiguan wins "most average looking, dull and boring SUV" category hands down... you nailed it... nothing more bland and average looking than the Tiguan. Nothing screams "Soccer mom SUV" like a Tiguan!
Thanks
