Спорт

The last list was for the Top 5 Big Bores known for their recoil. But these nasty beasts are the hardest recoiling rounds you can house in a handgun! Sit back, get some ice for your swollen shooting hand, and enjoy.

    I have 3 of these calibers. The .454 in my stable kicks more than the .460 and the .500. The extra weight of the S&W X frame and the muzzle brake tames the recoil so well I will gladly shoot my .460 and .500 more than the .454.

    Great information, I have the S&W 500 and .460XVR both in 3.5" barrel. Fantastic big bores. Would be great if you would do some big bore caliber penetration tests, .454,.460,.500 etc.

    faultroy I didn’t actually feel ashamed. Little bit of sarcasm there. While you made some good points, your reply had a “talking down” quality to it that wasn’t necessary. Nothing about my comment justified that level of condescension. Nothing about my comment should have led you to believe that I’m unaware of reloading, or that I don’t know that cartridges can be loaded down to lower levels of recoil. I’m pretty sure all shooters are aware of reloading. I made a lighthearted comment on a KZread video, and you went on a diatribe for some reason. I’m very impressed by your knowledge. God bless, and have a nice day.

    The bigger calibers don't necessarily have more felt recoil. My subcompact Glock .40, Ruger LCP, and Seecamp LWS 32 caliber are more unpleasant to shoot than my 500 S&W revolvers in my opinion. Bigger caliber guns are usually heavier, so while they do recoil backwards with more force, they can often do it slower than a smaller caliber in a lightweight gun. Big heavy guns will push you backwards, while small guns will snap back at you.

    Ive noticed from all these comments and the different opinions in various videos that perceived recoil is very different for each. Having shot alot of loads myself, there is a lot of overlapping. If you shoot the .454 with Aria balistics 420 grain load and shoot a .460 withe the lightest and mildest loads then you will think the .454 kicks more. I just got a raging hunter 6 inch and can say with absolute confidence that the .460 with an average load recoils noticeably more than the strongest 360 gr underwood .454 loads I have. And there are stronger .460 loads out there. I agree with this list for that reason. Yes, if you shoot a super redhawk .454 then shoot an x frame .460 with light bullets then .454 would kick worse. This list is something of a balancing act and I think its done right. I think the .500 magnum would be number one out of Gary Reeders guns no doubt. Hot 500 gr bullet would be something else in that gun. If I had the money, I'd commission him to build 5 similiar guns in .500 maximum, .500 magnum, .475 maximum, .460 magnum if it would fit, and .445 super mag. All 6 inchish barrel length and then you could equally compare all these different calibers. Some loads would still overlap though but sure would be fun testing them out. Oh yeah, no porting.

    Go Big Bore or Go Home I have an idea. The 500 JRH is a shorter 500 S&W Magnum, so the recoil is less by a minute amount. So why not buy the 6.5 inch half-lug integral compensated barreled 500 S&W Magnum X-frame revolver, and shoot the short 1.4 inch 500 JRH aka short S&W 500 Magnum in it? The recoil would be lower and yet the gun would be a double action and still be shootable without bruising the hand. Your thoughts?

  • @maxprasac9795
    @maxprasac97957 жыл бұрын

    I would leave the two Smith & Wesson offerings off the list for the reasons you mentioned in your .500 Maximum segment as the only two available platforms for those two behemoths are the stretch-frame BFR and the X-frame, both of which tame recoil significantly. Both the .500 JRH and .500 Linebaugh loaded up in a 3-lb Blackhawk will peg the recoil meter over the .454 in my experience -- even the .475 Linebaugh loaded to spec (420s at 1,350 to 1,400 fps). The only .460 load I found even remotely offensive in testing was the CorBon 395 grain load. Other than that, light and fast loadings make it a relative pussy cat. Nicely done......

    Max Prasac + Much appreciated input, Max. I know Gary Reeder has made stretch-frame .500 S&W Mags and those look as appealing to shoot as getting kicked in the nuts! point taken on the .460 &.500 S&W. But with the .500 Smith, even the X-Frame was a handful for me. I handled a .500 Max at a recent gun show and the light weight scared the crap out of me!

    I've shot X-frames with full-tilt loads with many bullet weights and the .500 Max outshines them in the "mule kick" category by a country mile. The 3-lb weight contributes considerably!

    Couldnt agree more. The only way the 454 gets there recoilwise is to go old school dick casull high pressure like my 340's at 1800fps but the jrh shortbarrel with 400's over 1500fps gets my vote

  • @algrimthestrong
    @algrimthestrong5 жыл бұрын

    Yeah...recoil wise, you're correct in your evaluation of the FIREARMS involved, but not necessarily the CARTRIDGES. The reason that the 500 Maximum is worse than the .500 S&W Magnum in FELT recoil, but not energy deposition or velocity, is the gun design itself...period. If you shoot the .500 S&W Magnum out of a similar type revolver, you'd understand my point. Well done nonetheless....🏆

    I thought hard about handgun only cartridges when I got a big bore handgun. Even handloading I didn't want to be paying multiple dollars per shot so I ended up getting a BFR in 45-70. My handloads are stout and the (still) low pressures mean I can take brass I've used for my high power handloads and use them for plinking rounds over and over again. Also fits my lever guns and someday I'll find a Ruger No 1 tropical in 45-70 to match.

    In respectful disagreement, the best bullets for the .500 S&W Magnum when momentum vs DG are the primary concern aren't the 440 grain WFNGC or the 500 grain in multi-format bullet presentation, and certainly not the 700 grain WFNGC, either, but, in fact, the 535 grain SWCGC and the 600 grain LFNGC. ✅

    Still wrong about the pressures, the 460 is also rated to 65,000 psi per Speer reloading and most info if you do a quick google search. If you can shoot 454's out of them they would not be rated to a lower pressure. The Smiths and the 454 are not usually loaded above 55k to help extraction. If you really want some recoil try a Smith 360 and a 329, that would be an interesting video. Watching someone shoot a less than 12oz 357 is fun.

    What do you think would hit higher on a Target. A blunt nose bullet or a pointed bullet. I checked the ballistics and it's not what I thought. The blunt nose will hit higher on the target. Because recoil starts the moment the bullet starts to move. Being that a blunt nose takes longer to leave the barrel the tip of the barrel is higher from The Recoil when the bullet leaves the barrel. so it hits higher on the target.

    Go Big Bore Or Go Home I carry my Ruger Bisley Blackhawk in .44 RM. Hand loaded with Cast Performance 240gr SWCGC Heat Treated Solids. Or my S&W M25-7 .45 Colt loaded with CP 265gr WFNGC, HTS. Or, my .40 S&W Witness, loaded with Barnes 140gr XPB’s. The Witness is the easiest to reload ( 6 12-rnd mags). Followed by .45 Colt, with six Speed Loaders. You hit BF in the Heart, Spine, or between the eyes, he’s going down. Or if you’re a good shot and can’t outrun BF, hit him just above the knee. Ought to at least slow him down so you can get away!

    What? Talk about twisting my perceptions around. I’d decided to stick to my 44 mag because of what I thought would be the relatively mild recoil, but now your telling me it’s #2. Maybe I’ll buy that 480 Ruger after all. Thanks.

    I have shot a safari round using the .500 s&w mag WITH the long and heavy barrel and holyfuckamoly! That thing kicked like a son of a bitch. Also, I stupidly loaded 2 rounds right next to each other in the cylinder and it did a double tap and I almost accidentally shot myself from the bottom of my chin thanks to the massive recoil.

    I pretty much agree with this list. I don't agree with sticking things through the trigger guard to photograph guns, though. There are such better ways to do it that don't detract from the photo's subject...

    I can't believe the 45-70 with the wood grip on the original bfr and any of the heavy garatt loads did not make the list. I normally carry a 5 shot snub-nosed 44 mag I have no problems with it. I shot one of those with my buddies hand load the trigger guard hit my bird fainger hard enough to dislocated it.

    @@gaydolfhitqueer835 ok I know the 45-70 was made as a rifle round but it was used in a few handguns. Including the Remington rolling block sing shot pistol not long after it was put on the market.

    I disagree with the list, the x frame are so heavy and have a muzzle brake that they kick way less than a .454. in fact I'd say a .44 kicks as hard as a .500.

    And if some sadistic type person was to recaliber their X-frame into .500 Maximum, how would the list be rearranged? I'm thinking the only reason the 500 Mag is in the #2 slot is because the only guns to shoot it weigh 5+lbs.

    andre21198 - Well, I have to go on the opinions of others. If loaded to it's limits in similarly weighted gun, I believe the high pressures of the .500 S&W Mag would put it over the top.
