1. Khmer 2. Vietnamese 3. Portuguese 4. Saracens Khmer is interesting because their WR is at 35% while the next worst civ has 40-41-ish. I don't know what made them so bad, I was expecting them to be around the middle group, not absolutely bottom of the group. Also for smartass who thinks Teutons and Turks are the worst, they are actually around the middle, Turks has 46%, Teutons has 49%, for comparison sake Mongol has 50% WR while Malay has 46%. Teutons and Turks aren't really that behind against those so called "Top tier" civs.

When facing against Franks, a player thinks "Yes! This match is gonna be gg easy", and then starts playing lazy. That's why Franks win. *Their bonus is a mindset nerf to the opponent.*

I actually knew franks were OP all along. Their throwing axemen deal melee damage at a distance. That is the most powerful damage type as it destroys both skrimishers (archer's counter) and structures at a distance.

@@mauriciojorgeyattah8871 what about the Gbeto then. Speed greater than Teutonic Paladin, almost equal to Celtic Woad Raiders, even higher melee damage at greater range. They basically perform hit and run with greater damage output in Castle Age, due to that melee thing.

I am so glad, because for all these years I have been watching the (great) videos of Spirit of the Law, I always thought Franks were the most underestimated civilization of all, downlooked as just a knight civ, when their castle drop(s) and unique unit can actually be very interesting!

maybe they are flexible on average, but in the top play there is only one viable option realy.

It says something that in a highest win ration list, most are still just in the 50 percentages, and only one is above 60%. Its a really well balanced game.

@@Siddios franks is also 1st in 2k+ ELO, in fact Franks is not 1st only in below 1500 bracket which is low tier players. I've watched some 1v1 tourney of franks too, they absolutely demolished. Although sample size is convoluted in Tourney because there's not enough game for that.

I haven’t played an years. But I always liked the Huns house bonus because it saves a little bit of time and you don’t have to worry about losing buildings to support your population.

In History, France has surprisingly the largest number of battle victories ever and the highest success rate. The game is therefore quite accurate.

I went to the Franks data page and saw that they have the highest win rate against Saracens... the civ that supposedly has a strong knight counter unit. Saracens need buff.

@@HiilandKew 1v1 has no trade and therefore gold is limited. Expensive units will rarely get made in 1v1. Mamelukes are not just expensive, they also require a castle which is even more expensive, and the civ does not have eco bonuses to support creating it, and finally mameluke are not great in castle age, but only shine in post imperial after elite mameluke and zealotry which are even more expensive techs. In team games its another ballgame due to trade producing unlimited gold and team games taking longer generally. Your allies can defend you till your army is ready.

Counters (camels) are great but they aren't so useful if they come out late. As highlighted in the video the Franks are able to pump out their knights early on (3rd fastest Castle age). By the time the Saracens are able to make camels their already weak eco has suffered too much damage, making it impossible to produce lots of camels. As for mamelukes well, they require a castle, which isn't practical when knights are already harassing your economy.

Oh man... your analysis are by far the best ones regarding AoC. You are such a scholar. Thanks for this. I really hope the developers of Age II DE contact you often before making balance decisions. After having gone through the change log up to patch 5.8, I didn't spit out my coffee with the Franks. Boosted in every single age, Free bloodline was too much, plus squires. No weakness for Franks. I hope in the future versions of the game each civs "at least" will have "a chance" to stand against stronger ones in the most popular maps. Balance in early ages is critical.

Keep up the great work SOTL, it's been your videos that have gotten me back into AOE2, even if you haven't realized the Teutons are obviously #1

@@silentgrind34 teutons are pretty generic and have almost lot of units. They have generic knight line. Good siege and gunpowder so this allows them to have more counters. If they build knights and handcannons they can be very strong with it and counter almost anything. Plus due their team bonus they resist conversion. So converting their knights will be difficult. They are more like turks if u can keep the gold incoming u can play the game for a very long time

The Teutonic Knights are too slow. Archers and Castles would devour them alive. But yes, the Teutons do domineer towards the end.

As a Franks main I saw this guy bash my Siv.... But this video was victory.... Fuck u all I'm finally satisfied. Also throwing axemen are under rated. They are cheap, castles are cheap so you can get em of the field easily and if your against goths..m well the goths are just fucked because they will go infantry. Never even touch your units even if they do axemen got lots of armor.

Amazing video! So happy to see Incas on top 5. Love it Franks there too, really nice stables and Knight Rush is a common and easy strategy for noobs and regular players. Also it's nice t see all 3 mesoamerican civs on top 8.

The Franks surprise me. I’ll admit that I gravitate towards them (favorite civs are Franks, Teutons, and Byzantines) because of paladin/cataphract, but I’m not a pro player. I assumed those civs are for us casual players, and I can beat other Franks and Teutons players easily on random civ, but that may be due to me knowing them inside and out. I struggle against civs like Britons or Italians (damn those Genoese Crossbowmen!) for the same reason. Great video.

*SPOILER* I think the fact Franks are #1 is because of how strong a fast castle is at lower levels of play. Let's face it, most aoe2 players aren't pro (like myself) and strategies like fast castling that wouldn't be viable at top level are for most players. This explained by the fact they have the 3rd fastest castle time of any civ. That paired with the fact they're also viable at pro level now too (because of berries and scouts getting bonus), it makes sense they're at the top. Still wouldn't have picked Franks though, was expecting Mayans.

I think its actually their deceptively good unit composition. Everyone thinks they are a cavalry civ, but they get a ranged melee unit in the throwing axeman, hand cannoneers, bombard cannons, halbs, champs, full castle age upgrade crossbows and even cheap castle drops for aggression. Add to that the strongest paladin in the game, they can counter almost any army.

@@schuhey7021 Access to HC and Bombards helps in imp but for the most part Franks are very predictable. Either scouts or fast castle into knights. But predictable doesn't mean easy to beat here.

obesechicken13 thats certainly true but i also think there is room for them to diversify in the mid game after starting with cav options. Of course most people would prefer to just stick with what they are good at though which is fine, they are damn good at cav spam

what is the song/music that plays when you annonce the #1? also, i find it funny (or interesting) to see the 3 no-stable civs in the top 8

People think Franks are weaker then they actually are simply because they are predictable. But heres the thing, being predictable doesn't matter if you can't defeat them even when you know what they are going to do. Frank cavalry is so strong that pikes are really the only good counter against them in the castle age. Problem is, the Franks unique units absolutely wreck pikeman and their fast castle time as well as the castles themselves being cheaper means its very easy to transition into them. They also got crossbows. Theres almost no army composition in the game that can beat Frank cavalry backed by throwing axeman and the few armies that could beat that usually requires the imperial age and tons of upgrade and research. I'm sure lots of people at every skill level would find Inca and Aztec more dominant simply because you never know what they are going to do. But thats exactly what makes Franks really overpowered, the fact that you always know what they are going to do and still lose! Even Indians, which people often say are their counter, have negative win rates against them even at over 2000 rating! It would be like arguing that Hulk is a weak Avengers because all he can do is smash while the others are so much more versatiles. Yeah but all the Hulk needs to do is smash. And all the Franks need are their cavalry.

I always win 1v1 with Franks against camel civs, have won against malians and Indians. One of the strongest even though I personally think that post imp Mongols are strongest civ. U just can't kill fuckin mangudais😂 God, I love them. Franks are definitely second strongest u could argue number 1 cuz of Mongols big drop from castel to imp. What makes Franks strong besides palas is 4 things: eco, halbs, bomb canons and axmen with cheap Castles. U op is infantry civ? Go with axmen and bomb canons, ur op is camel civ? Go with halbs and bomb canons, some axmen as well other cases just go with palas😂 of course there are certain situations when u could win only with certain civ but all around u can go with Franks every day.

The 5:15 editing and the "to be frank" were my favourite parts in this video :D

This is off topic but watching this makes me appreciate how AOE3 they got rid of the stone and also farms/ plantations are infinite unlike AOE2 you have to keep re planting them. It’s so much nicer especially when trying to boom your eco while attacking it’s hard to micro manage the farms

I know this is an old video, but I'm very impressed by the attention to detail and statistics here.

Although Franks have the best win percentage overall, it looks like Slavs are the only civ without a lower than 50% matchup against anyone. That mean the Slavs are favoured to win in every single matchup (except against Ethiopia, which is neutral).

Given how the French are actually the most militarily succesful country in history (>inb4 WW2 surrender memes) it kinda adds up

Well, they do have a great track record of warding off invaders, made even more impressive by the fact that France is surrounded by historically powerful rivals, including Germany, Spain, and of course, the UK. Also, even though the French did get taken over early in both World Wars, they got their country back both times-and arguably would've done so even without the Allies' help. And let's also remember France's longstanding reputation for having some of the best food in the world.

@@h0m3st4r The French may as well have been the best player for the allies in the Great War, by shouldering the burnt of the Western Front, such as their successful defense of Verdun and the introduction of the Renault Tank, the first effective tank design, which practically spearheaded the final push in the West, the best Allied fighter pilots were also French, such as Rene Fonck and Georges Guynemer

The franks are germanic and not "french". The term "french" originated centuries after the one and only Frankenreich. Imagine if the Frankenreich would have stayed together and since it consisted of todays Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium and even North Italy, it would have easily ruled europa and crushed England. And there is really no point France would have won the World Wars without the alles. Germany was hugely in favor in terms of manpower in 1914 (+20 million vs France) and it had the biggest, most expensive and best drilled army in the world. There would have been no chance to defend that postion and thats why England helped them to contain the Kaiser. About WWII we dont really need to talk about, its so obvious.

Franks were not only french. After Charlemagne/Karl der Große/Carl the Great the Franks split into west and east frankia which later formed the preprepre-states of France and Germany (and the Benelux etc)

When you were talking about Franks the music volume was a little bit high, for the rest great video as always!

Sotl is still underestimating franks he doesnt see how strong eco bonuses are. If you add up everything, (+150 res from berry faster collection rate +400 from mill upgrade + 150 from no bloodline) , *franks get 700 extra ressource by early castle age which is the equivalent of 5 knight +50 food.* *5 more knights than a generic civ is game breaker, whether frank wins or buys enough time to transition into one of the strongest late game composition.* There are no bad option they dont need like other early civs to win before late game, they can but they dont need it. As a quick comparison, -slavs needs to collect 4500 food from farms (so basically after dark age) in order to equal frank bonus. -Berbers need to spend 4400 ressources into knights which is the equivalent of 32.5 knights to equal frank bonus

The text editing with the scouting Eagle Warrior blew my mind. Well done, sneaking it in like that. There is also a stat on the website that is strange. How is the Franks' relic gold income so much higher than the average? They don't get a bonus for relics, do they?

Cav civs tend to be able to hold map control a lot better than archer/infantry civs and because knights dislike monks the frank enemy is likely to go monks thus making it so the frank player also wants monks, because who doesn't want their knight back, that's just my theory though.

@Spirit Of The Law, dont forget to take into account that if you need to build less house or no house, there is also less downtime due to villager constructing the building, meaning they are collecting more ressources meanwhile.

When You said Franks were no. 1 I thought it was a joke like you did in the top 5 archer video where you give no. 1 spot to the saracens

I've been toying around with the Franks lately and have been liking them. It's mainly because I've been trying to work onagers into my army more and throwing axemen backed by handcannoneers and bombards seem to do well with them, especially when my knights draw a wave of enemy pikeman and they charge right into my firing squad, lol

Franks will die like flies with Indians. Faster castle age. Imperial camels to kill their Paladins. Best hand cannoneers to kill their axemen. Cheaper villagers to support the food requirement. Throw in more gold and more elephant archers to kill off any archers. Voila, French can stay out

@@the_number_one Well, if you check the stats of the website, you'll see that franks win 53.48% of their games against indians. Way lower than their 60% average that's true, but still more than 50%.

Indians can't rush knights, also their camels aren't really a replacement for raiding and melee combat unlike knights which are virtually strong against most type of units in the CA.

How can you not mention the Throwing Axeman? They're amazing unique units

Amazing how I played this game in 2000, it was the first game or 2nd game that I played on my own PC (good ol' Windows 98), and it's 2020, and people still play it. Amazing...

Goths are apparently not good at all really. Especially among high rated players where it seems they have a negative winrate at all lengths of games. My guess is that pros put more pressure on at every stage of the game and so the Goths can't make it to the late game strong enough to swarm their opponent. In lower rated games, that strategy seems more effective. Also consider Arabia is probably one of the most common 1v1 maps whereas something like Black Forest is better for Goths. Spanish aren't as good as I would've thought. They suffer a slump in Imperial age that I guess kind of makes sense to some degree but I would've thought their flexibility would've helped them out more. I would've put them in maybe B+ and the stats reflect a sort of C rating at the pro level. Consider that this is 1v1 though and the Spanish probably have one of the best team bonuses in the game. Without it, the only eco bonus they get is the smith bonus which is mostly not impactful in the late game.

I don't think it's that simple actually with the Goths. Funnily enough the average for the Goths shows more improvement in most games towards the end due to the Huskarl spam, however in 2000+ games, the opposite patter is present, where the Goths get weaker in games that go on for over an hour. According to the statistics, they are hard countered by Malay and Byzantines. Forced Levy is amazing. Turning the swordsman line into a trash unit is absurd and the Huskarl is weak to the swordsman line. Massed Malay trash swordsmen cannot be outlived by the Goth's gold. Byzantines have the splash damage of the Cataphract and they have very high endurance due to great trash. 25% cut on the price of skirms and halbs? Yes. That's endurance right there.

In a 1v1 both suffer because of their poor early eco, so I'm not at all surprised. Having said that they can both be extremely fun to play, so if they work for you, go for it!

@@chrisdaley2852 Simply put, infantry are at the bottom of the rung among military units. The swordsman line isn't strong enough to justify using in most games, and while the spear line is good, they are mostly relegated to a counter unit. Same goes for the Huskarl. Goths get no good eco bonuses, bad cavalry and siege, and their archers are average. Spanish on the other hand are surprisingly good in 1v1, having a >50% win rate according to the site Spirit of the Law referenced. Faster build time, blacksmith upgrades costing no gold, open tech tree, great Castle unit. Arguably the best beginner civilization in the game, up there with Teutons.

Franks make sense to me. Their bonuses aren't "sexy" in that they stand out as particularly unique like Huns and their lack of houses, but they're all quite effective and fairly subtle. Stuff like the substantially cheaper castles and the improved farms means they can not only castle age rush well, but also just get those castles out faster (less stone needs to be collected) and put out more of them, which means good early castle harrassment. The free bloodlines makes scout rushing in feudal very viable. Having a few of their cheap castles means you can get to imperial and research the key upgrade techs you want without halting production of units if you are laying down a castle in enemy territory too, especially if you're picking up conscription. And like you said, the berry picking speed, though seemingly so minor a thing, gets them through the dark age period quickly and into their improved farming economy well.

eco bonuses are really strong 750 food collected 25% faster means 750 collected when others 600 so 150 ressource bonus when you hit castle age, free farm upgrade is 400 ressources No bloodline to upgrade : 150 resources saved When franks hit castle age and start making knights they are 700 ressources ahead a generic civ doing the same with most of it being food, the most expensive ressource early/mid game. Not any other civ get that a big bonus at this moment of the game it is the equivalent of 5 knights and 50 food left for free. 5 more knights early castle age is definitely game breaker, from that advantage frank whether win or buy enough time to transition into the late game which is one of the strongest and win that way.

The houses bonus for the huns is great for trade carts!
