While i worked as a merchant sailor my ship would occasionally bring me to Japan. I loved walking out of the shipyard into town passing all the shops doing this kind of work at Sasebo Heavy industries. Getting a glimpse of those men working the raw steel and forging it into enormous crankshafts for ships engines was truly inspiring. The intense heat coming off the metal after it was finished being forged blowing out of the doors of the factory was crazy, standing like 30ft away and it felt like a hairdryer blowing on your entire body. I have so much respect for the people in that industry and the astonishing work they do.

I've done a lot of welding in my lifetime, gas, acetylene, argon gas (Heli-arc)but I've never watched steel worked in this way. It's nearly hypnotizing, "eye candy" as your title says. Thanks for sharing this, I'd enjoy seeing more.

The person managing the manipulator arm does a very good job. Very efficient with an economy of motion, no wasted motions.

The size of those billets. No wonder they don't need a second heat to get so much work done.
