We had a Standard Schnauzer. She was the most amazing protector of my Partner and Kids right from the moment we got her. If you went anywhere near them with anything other than kind intentions you'd get bit, even just playing, if she thought you were a threat, you wouldn't be for long. She could read people better than any human I've ever met. She was a wonderful dog in so many ways.

When I saw the German shepherd I had to think of Proteo. The Mexican rescue dog that died in Türkiye during search for survivors. Thank you for your services superhero! 🙏🏻🇹🇷🇲🇽❤️

I had a Shepherd mix that just wandered up to our gate when I was a teenager. He was so smart and gentle but nobody would come into our yard without permission. The meter man used to read the meter over the fence with a telescope.

I have a American Bulldog,White Boxer mix 120 pounds who saved a family of three little girls, their dad, and their medium sized dog who went on a vicious attack from a huge Doberman as they entered the dog park. My dog in a split second stood up the dobie getting in front of the family, and was dodging his face biting like two bears then slammed dobie to the ground standing over him. My dog made the news and local parade. He is the sweetest dog and especially around kids. Almost every night he is chasing coyotes out of the yard.

can confirm my old line German Shepard could sleep all day but as soon as we are out of the door he is a ball of energy... he loves kids however is very suspicious towards strangers especially at night... mine is not trained as protection dog but he doesn't need to because he will protect even without training...

Rottweiler all day, everyday. Never owned a better/smarter/low key/ aggressive when necessary dog in my life. He was a clown, but when another dog became aggressive with my 3 year old son, he turned into a monster, he went to a place I never thought he could go. He went from the perfect family dog to the perfect defender in a split second.

They are great dogs as long as you don't get bad breeder's version. Decades of inbreeding by bad breeders have absolutely tainted the lines of a great protection dog breed. Maybe I've been lucky, but every rottie I've interacted with has been very friendly and stable with me, but very wary of suspicious persons. I absolutely love them! But those stories of bad health for keep popping up. I'm in the market for a new protection dog for the house, and rottweiler was one of the breeds (along with Doberman and Corso) that me and my better half discussed. The problem is finding a decent breeder who isn't breeding straight show dogs, or puppy mills. For that reason, we're leaning more towards the Corso.

I love all of these! Fate put a Great Pyrenees in my back yard with my kids and he’s very alert to any movement outside the fence. There’s never been an occasion for him to prove himself but his demeanor when he senses something gives me assurance that he will protect his own.

We have a Pyr as well (we used to have two but lost one suddenly when she was two and a half - we were crushed). I'd wager they wouldn't make any of these lists as this compilation relies heavily on trainability, and Pyrs are just about impossible to train. Which, to be honest, is one of their best features. You don't actually *need* to teach them how to guard your home and be gentle with your children, because that's a built-in feature of the breed. They innately understand the assignment.

I didn't get any security footage of the thief breaking into our garage where they found my ovcharka waiting on them but I did have a great angle on them running for their life away from the garage. Dog never left the garage as they didn't get the door open wide enough. The thief practically floated out the driveway.

Marv puts his head through the doggy door and there is kevin with the bb gun and just says, "hello".... garage door open just a little. They look inside... there is Tyr... "hello. What doing? Are you dumb dumb?"

I've owned a male doberman, female GSD and currently have a male & female cane corso. I've never needed or wanted these dogs as protection animals, only as pets and members of my family but have always enjoyed the large breeds. I honestly believe there's more variation in the temperament and aggression within individual breeds than between them.

@@lewislee3156 g'day Lewis. I can only speak from my personal experience with my individual dogs (so take this all with a grain of salt). The doberman was my first dog and I fell in love with his breed. They still remain my favourite breed but I'll never be able to get another as I don't think I'll ever get over losing him. He was the calmest most gentle and confident dog I've ever met. Absolutely perfect family pet. He didn't have an ounce of aggression or guarding ability in him (though we also never trained him to protect). He once let two removalists waltz into our house who had the wrong address! The GSD was a different story entirely. She was anxious and had a high level of fear aggression. I think that if she was a human she would have needed psychological help and medication. The 10years we had her consisted of two 2hr training sessions every single day. We could never relax around her for fear that she would attack or snarl at someone or something blowing in the wind. The corsos's are text book corsos's. Incredibly loving and playful but very calm as well. Super confident dogs but unlike the doberman they have a natural alertness. We leave our front door open most days and allow visitors to come and go without knocking to get the pups used to strangers. This seems to be all it takes to "untrain" their guarding instinct. Overall I would recommend the doberman as a friendly family pet that you can take anywhere off lead (the Corso might scare people due to its size).

@@lewislee3156 These breeds work great as protection dogs and familiy pets because they have a job to do, so they fulfill the purpose they're bred for. If you want one of these breeds only as a family pet, without giving it a job and training, you'll suffer the consequences. As "only a family pet" other breeds are so much easier than these! Think about it: a protection dog needs to be suspicious about strangers, because otherwise it wouldn't be a protection dog, is that what you want for your family? Unless you give them a real training (an expensive one, which you'll have to maintain), you'll be struggling with these concrete breeds.

You really can't base true temperament on a breed per se. You have to look at lineage. Looking at a line of that breed will tell you a lot .

Cane Corso, is an amazing breed. Our boy is fabulous with kids. A giant marshmallows ❤❤❤ never have any fears with our boy around he would lay his life on the line for his family. Incredible loyal Velcro dog.

Was looking for a GS dog. 🐾 Then I saw some Rottie pups. ❤ I went with my Rottweiler. Love him. He’s extremely stable, polite and at 8 months - pretty good on obedience. Loves chickens and cats. Great with kids! Just has separation anxiety ❤😢🐾🐾😘

Many years ago I went to the shelter and got what I was told was a puppy black lab, looking at his squared head I was skeptical about the breed but the wife and kids loved him on sight. I was right, he was a pitty-lab mix weighing a slender 95Lbs. I always knew dogs are what you train them to be. He was the most gentle dog with kids I’ve seen and Extremely protective of his kids. I’ve had 4 pitty mixes since and they’re all big babies. Glad my wife gave me her veto years ago.

The shedding is the problem

OMG the grey GSD got me into tears, he/ she reminds me of my GSD in the 80s. And she was a police dog too, worked with her to IPIII and won several tournaments with her. I'm so blessed to had her in my life. Because I live on an apartment, I decided to adopt a dog from Eastern Europe, he got a lot from a terrier and a shepherd with pointing ears. It's a small to middle size, but his teeth are way bigger than you think, so I think they used the dogs for hunting on rats. He is much faster than my GSD, so I have to watch if he doesn't see cats.

I've raised GSD'S my entire life. They are the best, and yes, I am just a little biased. Truthfully, they are so smart,quick to train,love their family, etc. I don't like the shedding, but it's just a part of them. Well worth it! I also rescue dogs, and my shepherds take them all in as family. My dogs are very secure, and if I bring an insecure dog into my pack,it does not take long for them to not feel threatened and see that they're all loved and cared for. It's an awesome sight. I've taken in miniature schnauzer, great danes,rottweilers, mixed breeds,etc. And 3 cats,lol,not a cat person, but they needed help. Pick your dog wisely, and be sure to train and socialize them.

@Christina Salois German Shepherds are easily adapted to any environment. Hot,cold,water,snow,desert, mountains, etc. They are easily adapted to apartment living as well as open spaces. They need socialization and even so will protect their family at all cost. All dogs need to be exercised,if that means just a nice walk. They are not high strung,they do fine hanging out until you have the opportunity to give them attention. They train fast and easily. They do like having a job. If you have more than one, they'll play together, but if you only have one,you will need to give them more attention. I have never had a digger,a destroyer, a chewer,etc. They are loyal,loving,compassionate, and stoic. Females are more protective by nature,you can't go wrong with either male or female. They make great pets that truly become family member. They also make super service dogs, get the training. They are highly trainable, intelligent, and loving. They are great with children. They are very chilled and ready to work when you are. They do not high the high prey drive like a cattle dog or Mali. Please always train and socialize any dog you get. You want to take them with you as much as possible. Best wishes

Shepherds are unique in their natural tendencies. Bred to drive sheep up to open pastures in Alsace, police grazing by keeping sheep in a particular area, and defend them from predators. The policing element makes them unique out of herding / guardian breeds because they have to assess and make a decision. Anyone who has a Shepherd will have seen them do things which require assessing and decision making which in some ways is pretty scary. This is why Shepherds need great training and management so they aren't making the decision because they don't think you can.

Grew up with German Shepherds. My family always had them and my grandparents even bred them ages ago in Eastern Europe. I'm about to get an all-black fully certified DDR. I've got second pick of the litter (most of the pups are solid black). Can't wait! It's been 10 years since I had a GSD.

what was not mentioned was the bite force of the Cane Corso which if you look at ratings sits third at 700 PSI and I believe it after watching my 180 lb. male snap a 2 stick. I also notice a good many so called experts never seem to mention an alpha dog - - in every litter you will find one that likes to dominate and it isn't a matter of size its more a mental toughness and attitude - - my female Cane Corso was an alpha. She was highly trained but you had to be aware of her tells and warnings to defuse a situation before it got out of hand - - if she developed a Mohawk down her back bad things were getting ready to happen and she was lightning fast. She died of cancer at almost 10 years old and I now have a huge male that weighs in around 180 lbs. and stands right at 6 ft tall on his back legs and gets along with other dogs and even likes cats ( he grew up with 2 of them ). He is way more easy going than my female was but if he runs into a situation he doesn't like the protection dog comes out quickly and the big goof turns into all business and unlike dogs you saw in this video you aren't going to swing him around - - just too big and too heavy. One day he picked up a 7 ft. long branch from an oak tree that the wind had taken down and came running back to me and my training partner - - we both just got the hell out of his way - - he would have taken off our knees as he ran past. The craziest thing is when he plays with kids he is very careful about bumping into them but adults not so much and when he leans against someone to get his butt scratched he'll knock you off balance without meaning to. I always tell people when I got him he was 154 lbs. at a year and a half and was not leash trained so I learned to water ski without water - - now a year and a half later I don't need a leash and he listens or watches for commands ( hand and verbal ) and anyone who knows how could walk him without a problem. After the various breeds I've owned and trained this is my breed of choice without question

They are one of the most loyal breeds and Akita never attack owners instead they protect.

Number 3 was surprising but I love the no shedding.

I had a Japanese Akita growing up, and he was 50 kilos. Trained guard dog was amazing with only our family. I also had a 65 kilo male Presa Canerio fully trained guard dog. Best doggo ever and kept an intruder by hit nuts for 3 hours till the neighbours heard the cry for help 😂. I was so proud he passed from cancer. But my now blue chihuahua is scarier than my Presa could be with strangers 😅😊.

I was raised with Doberman's and will always have them in my life. I have 4 children and currently 2 Dobe's. They have been raised as member's of my family and they have had protection training that I reinforce daily. That being said, I would trust my dogs with my kids before most human's. They are incredibly funny, loyal, faithful, and a GREAT judge of character. Finding a home insurance company that agrees with me has been a bit of a challenge, but I wouldn't have it any other way, my Dobe's are here to stay. :)

I've got 2 Akitas, they're very formidable guard dogs and very loyal, loving dogs but they do have an independant streak and are very dog aggresive with a high prey drive that mean they can't be trusted not to go "off piste". My last dogs were Caucasian shepherds, who are also very similar to Akita's but bigger and even more ferocious.

They are amazing home protection dogs, but boy you better know what your doing when it comes to working with them and training them. You also want to train people coming to your house to NEVER, NEVER just open your door and walk in. It will not end well for them if your Caucasian greets them before you do. Akitas are awesome too! They are so regal in the way they stand and hold themselves; however, I've found them to be single-person oriented, for lack of a better term. They pick their person and will die defending him/her. This is another dog you best know what you're doing with and socialize them continually through their lives.

GSD, I've owned many breeds of dogs and the link between shepherd and their owners is amazing.

Ive had two Dobermanns and a Cane Corso. Id agree with most of the points in the video, but I dont think a Cane Corso would suit most families.

Can you do a video on the Black Russian Terrier?! They are amazing guard dogs! They are like a giant schnauzer in mastiff form!

We've had dobermans, German shepherd and Rottweilers. Purely from a home companion point of view. The Doberman is a very demanding dog as it's very intelligent. Also has a very high drive based on the pedigree. The German Shepard is a very intelligent breed as well. But, none of them have the patience and calm character of a Rottweiler to tolerate the nonstop pestering of the kids at home plus being super cuddly! None of the above breeds would think twice before putting them between harm and their family. I only feel that the patience level of most of the top 4 breeds mentioned above is way lower than that of a Rottweiler. That's because they are a very confident breed. They bark less as they are very very sure of their surroundings.

I have a German Shepherd and she will tare anyone that breaks in a new one of course people can enter they just need to be escorted in by me or one of my family she has not been given much training besides some basic commands she is also a very sweet dog as long as she does not since a threat. I would love to get a doberman and a rottweiler but it will probably never happen I got lucky with my German Shepherd

I have had German Shepards most of my life and have seen them give love to my family and also protect them with their life and wouldn’t want any other kind of dog .

I have a German shepherd and a St Bernard, both are very protective

I give the Corso number one mainly because they're more stable in the family setting and are almost indestructible for strength and protection.

I'm sad to hear Rotties are off the list, and that the breed is declining that way...Cause they are num 1 for family friendly/protection dogs for me. I have had bad experiences with dobbies (seems these 2 have revere rolled ) and I love Cane corsos, but they seem to be super family protective, which good..but not towards friends etc.

I have had German sheps my whole life. My latest just turned one year old and is a solid black working line. A hundred pounds of pure baby that wont let my wife out of his sight! My last girl jumped the fence to protect the neighbors kids from a snake in their yard.I love all doggos but Sheps have a special place in my heart.

I've owned rotties for the past 25 years, hands down the are the most loyal fearless affectionate dogs ever ..they would protect to the deathand are great with kids the only other breed I would want to own is the corso which is now on my radar

Our 16 year old Doberman, Roscoe, is still with us. He lost a back lag to cancer but he runs around anyway and is a very happy boy. Lost his brother, Boss, our 140 lb Cane Corso, to cancer a couple years ago at 10. They were perfect around our 10 grandkids, and kept us very safe for many years….and we spoiled them with not n stop love. When in their prime, the two of them were quite a sight….and they adored each other.

I have Corso he’s 7months it’s my first corso and it’s so bizarre he’s so calm and nice sometimes I find it crazy when I hear ppl say there crazy. Yet when it comes to work (actual guarding) he does it! he got at it with two pitbully mix dogs when they entered our backyard I do have video proof of it too 😂

I'm a large dog person. My dad had what they called a tea cup poodle, 4 lbs always getting stepped on. I've been researching a breed that's a long-lived large breed, like the Kangal, Russian watch dog, etc.

I have 2 Mals the oldest is more German Shepard mix but looks like a large Mal. My youngest is pure bred and smaller but extremely energetic. He’s also extremely possessive of me.

Giant Schnauzer all the way. Big enough to do business, small and smart enough to be a pleasurable house dog, little shedding and healthy issues and most people won't cross the street when you walk it so easy to socialize

This was a great video!! Thank you!! I have a beautiful Sable GSD, Elsa, who just turned 1 year old today!! She is a handful. I have had her since she was 8 weeks old. I also have a 6 year old Rottweiler, Bear, who weighs 160 pounds. He is a giant!! Then I have a pitbull, Suzie, who is almost 11 years old and weighs 82 pounds. They all get along. Good watch dogs. They stay inside most of the time and like to sleep on my husband's and my bed at night. Not much room for us. They are spoiled rotten. I always look forward to your videos. 😊

Cane Corso's are naturally protective, intelligent and very self aware but it takes a while to earn their trust

What about the European/German Boxer dog? It's often forgotten in all the protection, working dog breeds. However, they're brilliant with the family and could be trained IGP/protection! 😉 Agreed with the German shepherd on top of the list though!

@@ageautistic6957 When Boxers get attached the most cuddly and calm ones can get protective. The boxer of an aunt adopted my niece when she was a toddler and playing with her. After that, my sister in law wasn't allowed to touch her child anymore.

Hands down the Cane Corso has made its cred through thousands of years of experience and dedication bar none. It was the family sitter , hunter , protector. Here in Canada in the span of a decade or so it's become the 3rd most popular breed in Canada. They're the perfect buffer between city life and wilderness life. This breed has literally taken over Canada. Only the golden retriever and shih-tzu outnumber this family loving giant.

You haven't made a video on the Hovawart yet, which is also a very family centered, amazing protection guard dog. It is quite a rare breed in many countries but this does not mean that is it not a brilliant dog!

I just bought a Jerman Shepeard Pup and do need a Good Trainer. I am on the South Side of St Elizabeth Jamaica. Would appreciate a good Response for a Great Trainer.

European doberman should be number one. It's sole purpose was to be a personal protector. You cannot say that about the rest on this list.

Doberman are the best I owned a doberman and they are ver smart. I don't know how to train dogs but she does everything really fast.

I’d be curious to see your list of top family guard dogs. The difference being breeds that guard the family but do not need advanced protection training.

Dogs specifically bred to shepherd or guard MUST be trained, along with their masters. Like a gun, there are responsibilities, imo. If you don’t want to train, get a Lab.

I do think the Dobermans are on par with Rotties in medical issues. My neighbor owns Rotties and my family owns Dobies. They both are plagued with different medical issues. More recently the past 2 dobermans I had didnt get heart issues. Now are plagued in stomach issues. I'm soo tired of cleaning up dog puke. I think this will be my last doberman. At this point I would like to find the healthiest guarding breeds.

I absolutely love my GSD. She’s so loving and playful, but loves her at home 20 minute training sessions twice everyday, then back to being a snuggle bug. She’s trained to ignore outside distractions, but will alert us if there’s a threat. A pitbull off leash ran up once and she growled with her fur standing up but let him sniff, she sat up watching intently what his motives were. When she realized he wasn’t a threat, she lay down watching him. If she gets bad vibes, just like a human we feel something is off, trust your instincts like they do. Get out of there, quickly.

If you have the time money and proper environment any of these dogs can be great homes

Thanks Anneka, My vote goes to the corso because power. Stability is the most important trait regardless of breed. If you live in a suburban setting you need a dog that can assess not just react. That also requires a degree of independence. And you must be an incredibly responsible owner once any dog has been trained to bite I also think the boerboel should have made the list. The corso and boerboel are man stoppers. That’s the difference. The others just don’t have the power.

That’s not true that the others aren’t man stoppers. In the US the popular breed for junkyard dogs is the Doberman and I have personal experience with giant schnauzers. both of those breeds can easily take down a full grown man. The only way you’re coming out on top is if you have a weapon and can get to it & use it.

@@LudiCrust. Dobermans are very trainable. Cane Corso also. But you can call a doberman or a gsd off. You can't do that with a Corso. Or an American bulldog. I mean you can if you get in early enough but if not when they commit to an attack it's near impossible to bring them back down again. Independent streak, they will use their own initiative. Most people will own them as well socialised pets and may never witness that. But the dog has it in it. It can go to another level and won't be stopped

My babies didn't make this list but, since I was 2 Chow Chows have been my Ride or Dies. I also know how to raise them to be the nicest, sweetest, and most approachable pups you could want. However, no one has ever been dumb enough to raise up around me with them in our presence. Guard dogs don't need to be trained to be guard dogs, they need to be trained to be socialized, as they already have it in their DNA to do what they do.

Just lost my 80 pound blue chow to cancer, he was 10 years old and I know would protect me from anything. Miss him so much 😢

My sister had a Doberman that was a protector and a huge lap dog that loved us. It was a lap dog with me when I slept watching tv.
