No Giant Movie Monster can ever Dethrone Godzilla!
Over half of the list is from older movies and I agree wholeheartedly with it. They really knew how to make giant monsters back then.
Honestly, having done VFX for a long time for major studios, I have to say, when I look at Jason and The Argonauts, remembering watching these movies as a kid, and now seeing them, especially the Talos iron golem sequence.. I am more blown away the older and more experienced i get... I mean, what is staggering to me is not just the absolutely groundbreaking animation, nor the amazing quality of details on his models that he is generally acknowledged for, but it is also the lighting and compositing when those things were much harder... He had to light these models so that they fit into the scenes/film plates, and he does such an amazing job, I mean better than many modern films where they have advanced compositing tools, and rendering software, etc. He had to do with with old school negative film projection, and even more amazingly, match the plate's lighting environment using only small lighting rigs to balance lighting levels, quality, etc.. It is such an incredible show of craftsmanship by one guy, a guy who so much of how far we have come is owed to the generations of future vfx people he inspired.. Ie the Dykstra, Ken Ralston's, Dennis Muren, etc ie the founders of ILM, and the first gen of the age of computers vfx gurus, etc.. It was great to see not just one, but multiple entries in this list of his creations... I commend this list for what so many other lists on the internet don't pay homage too... only listing modern monsters.. when his monsters really started it all... not to mention the other greats like Godzilla rubber suit amazingness, and movies like Ants, the Blob... all great to see here..
Godzilla is the true king of the monsters, and truly the hero to us all.

I enjoyed it because they didn’t have to create another devastating weapon to defeat him.
Very glad to see Trollhunters get a shoutout on this list. Fantastic (yet underappreciated) movie, especially if you like the found footage genre. "Why you problem make, when you no problem have that you no want to make?" Kills me every time.
Mothra has always been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. Creature Double Feature every Saturday afternoon on a local channel was and is a fond memory of mine and my husband's.
Glad you gave Gamera some time in the spotight! Nice work! But of course, fans like me must find nit to pick...just a little: What about the Ymir from "20 Million Miles to Earth"? Another Harryhausen masterpiece! Or "Gwangi" from the same great animator? The obvious solution: Make another video with even more awesome giant monsters! Thanks for the great fun!

20 Million Miles to Earth kinda gets a shoutout with the number 3 position of the Cyclops. Harryhausen reused the metal armature of the Ymir, chopped the tail off, give it a new skin and the Cyclops was born.

I think there's quite a lot of people that like Kong more than Godzilla. And I agree all credit is due to Kong. But I still thing that Godzilla deserves the number one spot. He's always been: 1) A bigger threat. 2) A more terrible and haunting force of nature. 3) A more famous and widely exposed cinema image. 4) A more unique and visceral experience. 5) A deeper and more tragic narrative meaning. King King is a Giant Gorilla, and his stories have always played to both the fearsome nature of that, but also the sympathetic angle, the humanity behind it. King Kong is ultimate an outsider, an animal whose feelings and tragedy invite the audience to empathize with the situations he finds himself in. Godzilla, though, is the very price of the hubris of humanity itself. He is all our worst natures, invoked and punished in the most raw and visceral retribution. He is destruction incarnate, the unstoppable wrath of a world that's simply too big for any of us. Be it the unfathomable oblivion of the Nuclear Bomb itself, the haunting will of the souls of war's tolls, nature's balance personified, or the will of the people of Earth to resist the strange and alien... almost every incarnation of Godzilla is emblematic of a force, a concept, hell-bent around its indomitablility, the stark reality of its being. Where Godzilla dwells, the nightmares of humanity have been realized, and man must either suffer its consequence, or cower and pray for its protection. Godzilla isn't simply The King of Monsters because he's big or bad... he's the King of Monsters, because he embodies the most Monstrous of ideas. He transcends his physical threat, and roars from the fathoms of true existential terror.
Great list, for me and going past 30 Giant Movie Monsters I'd also add: Gigan (Godzilla movies), Megalon (Godzilla), Gnarfle the Garthok (Coneheads), Dark Overlord of the Universe (Howard the Duck), Colossal (2016 Colossal), Alien Queen (Aliens), Great White Apes (2012 John Carter), Yew Tree Monster (A Monster Calls), Bull or Alpha Dragon (Reign of Fire), Octalus (Deep Rising), Demon Lord (1987 The Gate), Ebirah (1966 Ebirah, Horror of the Deep), Orga (Godzilla 2000) and Smaug (The Hobbit).

I'm sorry but I cannot stand for this continued Slander against Anguirus. He was the First monster to fight Godzilla (inventing the Kaiju Battle), he is one of Godzilla's oldest allies, and he's one of the most underrated Kaiju in Toho's line-up. My favorite is Mothra, especially her son Mothra Leo from the Rebirth of Mothra Trilogy.
War of the Gargantuas has the most amazing battle. The military sets up a defense to take out the Gargantua and it works, until another one shows up. Plus the maser cannons had just wonderful animation, with the drawn-in beams seeming to cut down trees due to carefully timed squib detonations.
Whats cool about Trollhunter (2010) is that the secretary general of NATO and former prime minister of Norway Jens Stoltenberg has a cameo at the end of the movie saying that "Norway has trolls" 🤣

A giant beast I think is missing from this list is the Original and only male dragon from the 2002 film Reign of Fire. A truly fearsome beast.
I know Mothra came in at #5, but she's still my favorite.
I saw the original Mothra as a child on an old black and white TV set and she is my favorite, along with the story itself. I also love the Mothra song.🦋🎶
One I feel was forgotten was Shelob. The giant spider in LOTR Return of the King. She should be on the list
My favorite is Shin Godzilla. Minus One was amazingly awesome, but Shin just has that horror factor the other versions lack. Plus we never got to see just how far "Evolution Incarnate" could go...
Godzilla, 70 years and still kicking ass
A few monsters I would include: Super8's alien Xenomorph Queen Sandworm Chtulu The one the guardians of the galaxy battled at the beginning of the second movie
Thanks for another good shift watchmojo!
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! Jason and the Argonauts (1963) is an awesome movie to watch. 🤣
The narration is perfectly placed. Well done.
Next year marks Big G's 70th birthday. Just as iconic as Mickey Mouse, Mario and The Rock.
I have no problem with Kong and Godzilla being #2 and #1. It’s apples and oranges between those two. Kong came first, which is important, but Godzilla has more films. If two could share a #1, all is fair in Godzilla and Kong!
I love that the giant squid from 20000 leagues is included here, just a small correction though: Capt. Nemo is the antagonist in that film, even if he is quite sympathetic.
I never noticed, watching it as a kid, but how did the Blob ever catch anyone? It was so slow! 😂🤣
Godzilla will always be the king of the monsters. Having said that, he, Kong and Gamera make up what I like to call the Trinity of Kaiju.
My head is spinning... Old and New.... Japan, Australian, US... Stop motion, Slow motion, Live action, Computerized.... Geeeee-whiz! ...How in the world can ya have them ALL on one "WatchMoJo" Countdown.... Oh well.... I'll just sit back, relax and enjoy ALL the movie monsters... no matter where they come from. I love Godzilla, but my favorite movie monster is a tie between The Monster from The Id and Kothoga. I wish someone would remake Forbidden Planet, Relic is fine. 😉
Lol,I have got to say King Caesar from Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla movies is the most adorable (besides Mothra),giant monster/puppy looking, lol,in the Godzilla movies, lol!!!😂I truly hope and pray that you are all blessed out there!!!❤😂
Awsome list but the sandworms of Dune are massive compared to those of Tremors. Also, one of the biggest monsters on screen that's rarely talked about is the giant meteor dwelling monster that almost at the Millennium Falcon. Very entertaining list.
Godzilla is my favorite monster out of them all I do love the other giant monsters like Mothra, King Kong, Gamera, behemoth, Troll, Space Godzilla, etc. But King that ranks beyond all of them is definitely Godzilla. Nobody will never dethrone him not in 30 years not even a 100 years.
I'm glad you put Gorgo in the list besides Gamera and Gamera is my most favorite
Impossible, you can not gush over Ray Harryhausen enough!
This might be obscure to most, and I'm sorta not surprised it isn't on here, but there was a movie that haunted my childhood, and from what I have seen, a lot of other people's childhoods, but the giant turtle from The Bermuda Depths should be on this list somewhere. I remember seeing the only Rankin-Bass live action movie on late night TV when I was a kid, and it scared the hell out of me at the time! For years afterward, I scoured the internet just trying to find the name of the movie so I could watch it again as an adult. The only thing I could remember from it to identify it was that Burl Ives was in it and Connie Selleca. So thank God I discovered IMDB! I did end up finding it online and watching it again, as well as other rare and hard to find movies from my childhood. Carl Weathers never stood a chance!
Awesome list, I think that the main big bad kaiju from pacific rim uprising should’ve at least made it to the honorable mentions list
Damn right Godzilla is #1, he is called King of the Monsters for a reason after all. Just a quick note about Kong though, he has never actually beaten Godzilla. They have fought twice with the first battle ending in a draw and Godzilla winning in the last movie only for the human protaganists to revive Kong later so that he could help take down Mechagodzilla. The two left with mutual respect for each other afterwords which is good because considering what they will be up against in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire they may need to put their differences aside and team up again.
After watching Return of the Jedi I had to sleep with the light on ,the Rancor scared the crap outta me(still does to this day)😮😮

You should have played the Godzilla song, Go go Godzilla. Brandon Tenold has taught me on his KZread channel that the scariest thing in a Kaiju movie is the Kenny from the Gamera movies.
How about the cat from The Incredible Shrinking Man?

Too bad that Smaug and 'The Smog Monster' didn't make the list, though. I also love Gamera and Mothra but my favorite will always be Rodan!

A very informative video on giant cinematic monsters indeed.
I feel like Godzilla not having wings is what makes him the best. He's unique, his roar is arguably the most iconic sound in cinema, and he's just powerful enough to defeat every other monster without being the prototypical huge medieval dragon
Missed my favorite Ray Harryhausen beast from 10 Million Miles To Earth. I don’t know what his name was but his final battle against the African elephant was Epic.

Nice to see a list where the top 5 (and at least 7 of the top 10) are a clear consensus. Not sure how broad the definition of "monster" is, but a few that crossed my mind: -Audrey II (Little Shop of Horrors) -Jaws (Jaws) -Unicron (The Transformers 1986) -Monstro (Pinnochio) -The Bugs (Starship Troopers) -Dragon (The Secret of Nihm) And, in its own way, quite possibly the most terrifying of them all... -The Nothing (The Neverending Story)
I rather enjoyed this list and I always love the call backs to the old classics especially when it comes to their special effects ♥ I did kinda miss an Alien Queen, the Meg and Smaug on this list? I mean I realise one is 'just an extinct animal' and the other is quite smart, but I'd definitely still put them on a monster list. Also an Alien Queen isn't like building size but still pretty damn big and definitely a monster.
I feel like you could've done an honorable mention for the octopus from It Came from Beneath the Sea
BIG G is the real deal no 🧢 He can take on anyone, anytime in an one on one battle and will come victorious no matter what kaiju he's facing

Maybe in a top Sci-Fi monster list, they'll get another chance.
My favorite giant monster is King Kong. I like apes and I liked how the monster-verse made him a good monster protecting his home and allies.
Godzilla is not only really awesome because of pretty sweet and fun monster battles, but he also is a commentary on various human disasters and creations. First starting out as a commentary and warning of nuclear weapons (and pretty much doing that ever since), but also in Shin Godzilla being a commentary on the Japanese government's response to the fukashima power plant disaster, the earthquake and the tsunami. The latest movie also seems to take a crack at some deeper meaning with post ww2 trying to find itself after the bombings. Since he is essentially a massive natural or man made disaster manifest into a big monster he can be a stand in for pretty much any major mistake humans make which means he is pretty timeless. And when there is no big mistake humanity has made to comment on, well just have him fight some other big monster with cool special effects. clearly the best movie monster ever

There was a remake in 1993 starring Daryl Hannah. A parody was made in '95 called "Attack of the 60 ft Centerfold." (It doesn't deserve to be watched though.) Then in 2011 Roger Corman produced a 3D film inspired by it called "Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader." A true modern remake would be pretty great to see though.

The first, and the inspiration for all the others, "King Kong", 1933. I was 9 when I saw the movie for the first time, and it's been my favorite ever since. The cyclops from "Seventh Voyage of Sinbad" is a close second. Then - the original Godzilla film. The suspenseful atmosphere created in that movie has never been matched for me.
Kronos, The Thing (giant vulture not shape changer), spiders from Eight-Legged Freaks, Celestial from "Eternals", Batra and the Giant Octopus from "It Came From Beneath The Sea"
I personally love Gor Gor who is known to the fans of the band GWAR...
