It depends on what you mean by "better". If you don't include build quality, daily useful technology, customer service, number of service locations, availability of spare parts then you are right.

@@EforElectric How did that pan out with the id4? I think in truth most of the evs are badly supported by current manufacturers. I've seen kia ev6 here in the UK needing new 12 volt battery and people wait over 6 months for Kia to get the battery into the country. This is when the battery is already in stock in shops but if you buy one and fit it yourself or ask a garage or the dealership to fit the battery not sourced directly from Kia then you void the warranty! There are wheels falling off Toyota, GM issuing stop driving the car warnings. BMW not being able to fix issues with the i3 rex. The list goes on. But to say people with non Tesla evs are getting a better customer service duty to service location and spare parts is very incorrect. Most ev makers are really struggling with spare parts.

@@EforElectric onlineo's tone was a little negative, but he had valid points on the struggles of most EV manufacturers. They all have low production numbers, are struggling with supply chains, and are selling at a loss or very slim margins. That's going to impact their ability and motivation to invest adequate resources into service. Many of them are based on ICE designs or hastily designed EV platforms that are not well optimized for mass production, meaning they are going to have build problems. There are some exceptions. A follow up video the focuses on the 4 or 5 of these that are the exceptions and are "true" competitors would be awesome. So far, none of these have convinced me to not continue to wait the several more years for my CT reservation to come up. That includes the "SUV in name only" Model Y. As an absurdly tall guy, I want something approaching the driver's space in my Dodge Charger and Lincoln Navigator.

2 problems that I see for many of these alternatives: 1) You can't actually find many of them and buy them....and if you do find one they are tacking on crazy mark ups...and 2) Many areas of the country, CCS charging is not very plentiful and has had questionable reliability.

More and more are going to the online sales model. Polestar is one that does this already and Volvo does to a degree for their EVs. Others are following. Hopefully they'll do so soon. I keep hearing that EVs are charged home and if that's the case, then the public charging isn't that big an issue. Tesla has a major advantage in the charger network and it's a big oversight that other manufacturers still haven't created an alternative that works as well.

My two college room mates and I have all bought EVs in the last 3-months. The smart money is buying ALL Tesla!
We initially opted for the 2022 ID.4 instead of the Model Y and boy did we make a mistake. We had the ID.4 for 6 months. In that time, the car had to be serviced 3 times for software and electrical issues--error codes abound. Eventually the speedometer and backup camera completely stopped working. Luckily VW bought the thing back before we could lemon it. TLDR: Don't get an ID.4! 2023 Model Y is on the way!
Agree with others. No inventory for these vehicles in US. I live in CA and the dealer laugh at me when I ask about these vehicles. If they ever do arrive the stealers mark them up big time. Still waiting for supply to catch up to demand so I can buy at MSRP. Want to try Aptera when they have a production model for test drive.
My only other option besides Tesla is Rivian, because they sell directly to customers. I would never again in my life visit a dealer. After the experience i had buying a Tesla.

@@Bebela1ms I am loving the Model Y, so far. It is fast handles great and is very comfortable. It did not take too long to get a handle on the screen-based controls. We are insured with Central Mutual Insurance, which is charging a price that I consider fair. The 2023 Model Y replaced a 2016 Subaru Forester and the insurance cost went up by $56 per month. Since I replaced a car worth about $18,000 with a car that is worth about $53,000, it seems reasonable that the cost for the collision and comprehensive parts of the insurance would be much higher.

People do it all the time, and several charge faster than a Tesla. Not to mention being better cars.
In my view, it will be another two years before we see enough production to bring EVs into real competition with Tesla. They are the only ones that can produce cars at sufficient scale to deliver cars to anyone who wants one. All the rest are hard to get and marked up so that the average buyer will just walk away. The market is getting there incrementally, but price and availability continue to present big obstacles for the average Joe. So for now, Tesla will remain the best option if you can afford one.

And Movano and E-208 and EC4 and E-Traveller and many more. They all use the same 100kW drive train.
I'm in the UK. All of these cars are either much more expensive or they are much smaller and/or have a much shorter range than a Model Y. Where the model Y wins for our family is its large trunk/boot and large frunk coupled with acceptable price, range and most importantly the supercharger network. That said we have a model X as we love the electric doors and the gigantic boot/trunk in the 5 seater. The only other vehicle I would consider is the ID Buzz, but the range at 70mph is not good enough for an EV without supercharger network access.
I can't get over the looks of the Mach-E. However, I did test drive it and it was very pleasant. Not a fan of the interior aesthetics. Fan of the Ioniq5. My wife vetoed it though....

The next & last purchase was our immaculate 6,500km Mercedes B Class hatchback, which has the best ease of loading & capacity of them all. Having owned it for 12 years now, we've never had any hint of service price shock from our genuine MB service centre. BTW, for all but one year (Department of Civil Aviation as an apprentice electronics tech), I worked in the distribution & transmission maintenance sector for ETSA, & spent my last 10 years in the SINGLE control centre for managing both distribution & transmission systems. You should be aware that since the privatisation of public energy utilities, the prices have skyrocketed. Thanks for your channel Alex, very informative and I guess KZread algorithm pop up in my feed. I have been considering jumping on the EV wagon for a second vehicle. One vehicle in my household will always been a gas combustion/hybrid or gas combustion. I lived in CA many years and I understood the fascination with these vehicles, but the price range was out of range for me. I returned to Florida for many reasons after my long career in CA and one item here that EV manufactures have not been able to resolve and its not talked about and hushed about is our hurricane season. Just recently with Idalia and also Ian hurricanes we literally had Tesla models or other EVs suddenly because of flooding or salt corrosion of the rain, the engines burst into flames and engulfed the entire vehicle destroying them. Firefighters department can not suppress these fires with water, it is a chemical fire and hence they now have to have special solvent with them to suppress these kinds of fires. Let’s not even get to the environmental contamination- that is another story. Additionally, these vehicles are worthless - paperweight when our electric grid is down. For this reason, I am not going 100% EV and will never until EV manufacturers are able to really get a hold of this problem. So you have a car that is insolvent and a power grid that can not sustain a hurricane, hence it is still up to diesel or gas combustion to literally gets out of an emergency.

So why use the word "cheaper" to describe something that is relatively expensive at a lower cost. Better to say "cost less" or "lower cost" than "cheaper." But it seems a lot of people say "cheaper" now.

Great job Alex it’s good to see the variety of body styles all looking like new vehicles not seen before. Other than Tesla’s charging network there’s no other real, appeal they all look the same for 10 years and no plans for a facelift, once CCS is over their growing pains and Tesla opens up their chargers and the dealers install their charging infrastructure all will be good, the big appeal of an EV anyway is to charge at home for practically nothing.
Thank you for that extensive list if sexier and cheaper alternatives to model Y. I just want to say that while there are many sexier alternative EV channels, none is cheaper than yours.

I still will wait for the better batteries on EVs in the US market and use my old gasoline car this year.
My local Hyundai dealership is marking up Limited Ioniq 5’s by $7,000 and my local Kia dealership is marking down EV 6 Gt line by $2,000. So if I was buying right now I’d choose the EV6 over the I5. Hopefully Hyundai dealers will eventually have to lower their prices. The ID4 seems like the best choice as you can still get a federal tax break on it, but Volkswagen made so many dumb choices with the infotainment and other controls. I wish I liked the Model Y, but I just don’t. And then there is the foul odor that Musk leaves behind too. I’m going to wait.
Model Y is more of an MPV than a crossover/suv. It has a huge trunk. None of these alternatives has at least 500 litres trunk space :(

Only if you can't afford a Y. Still the best value EV besides the 3. (I couldn't afford the Y, so I bought the 3). GV60 would be the best alternative, but it is expensive in my country.
keep on building, I'll keep on waiting.
First off moving to an EV from gas is STILL a big thing for a lot of people, I can’t move to any other EV knowing the battery issues and charging infrastructure being so bad and so less compared to Tesla. Unless the charging structure becomes good and I get out of spec Kyle’s approval, I would never ever think of going to another EV other than Tesla. If can’t have an EV I’d rather go back to using gas car.
Nice video. Couple of points. The Hyundai/Kia/Genesis cars are good. However, their fit and finish quality makes Tesla seem like top-notch. I owned a Kia Sedona and my mom has a Kia Sportage. Both cars have terrible fit/finish items. I'm honestly surprised people like the Model Y. That car made my neck and back hurt after only driving it for ten minutes. I liked the id.4 and it was on my short list. I did see my first BZ4X at a charging station this week.

Wait…so a lot of these vehicles are hard to buy at msrp, not on the market yet or have been built in very low quantities thus making them unavailable and some how these are “real world” options vs a Model Y? You’ve had a terrible time with your Id.4 but still endorse them? I would recommend a Tesla to a new EV buyer on the basis of easy to buy at the listed price, have mature tech in their cars and easy charging. Having a good experience is worth something in my book.
Why didnt the ID4 just uploaded the software improvements? Why woukd there be 2 diff cars so soon

My favorite EV alternative to model Y is a Hybrid. I still haven't converted.
All of these cars are Model y substitutes that come with a healthy dose of buyer's remorse. Thesemodels, like your ID4 are EVs that owners get, and then 'graduate' to Teslas. I began EV-ing with a Leaf. Seemed dandy, at first. Now it's - Ick!

@@davegenet "Not even Tesla thinks they’ll be making the only good electric cars. " Of course NOT! Tesla does not make cars. I got a Fiat 500E Cabrio Rose Gold. For wifey of course. Wonderful to look at. You can open the roof. But its a bad EV and a worse car to use every day. I watch the EV market every day since 2018. Some of these cars you are saying are Model Y alternatives aren't in the same size range or type of car. The Y is a crossover. The Leaf is much smaller. The Polestar 2 is more Model 3 sized than Model Y sized. It's a much smaller car and more of a sedan and not a crossover. And some are in a different category altogether, more mainstream or more luxury than the Model Y which is in its own weird category of not really luxury but considered premium due to features and tech.

@@EforElectric To Benjamin's point, that's not quite what you said, "... but there are actually 32 other similar EVs in size, price, and features - just to the Model Y that are on the market right now, or are going on sale in the US and Europe." But as he points out, the Model Y "is in its own weird category" so direct competitors may be hard to find. Still, calling some of these "alternatives" is like saying tofu is an alternative to a good Rib eye steak. I may love them both, but nobody is going to suggest tofu when the butcher is out of Rib eye. Many of the 32 models are great general suggestions for an EV, if you can find them. But only 3 or 4 of these would I suggest to someone that was considering the Model Y over the other Tesla models. Some have enough "concerns" I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
Wouldn't say that all the alternatives are a pick instead of Tesla Y. For example Polestar, not even close to the trunk volume. The range as well. Otherwise a interesting video, good job 👍🏽
Hello, I would like to buy an electric car and I am looking for a vehicle that has 4-wheel drive, hatchback, efficient, long range (350 miles minimum), good quality. What do you recommend ?
Based on your experience with the VW ID 4 and Tesla. I'll keep letting others be the guinea pigs with EVs. I do not know why these car companies do not accept their inadequacies and ask Google and Apple to help them with their OS. Only Lucid was smart enough to incorporate Android Auto and Apple Carplay.
Try out the BYD
The Mach E - if you can find one - is the vehicle to buy while it qualifies for the full credit. One of the best options on the list and the price with credit can’t be beat. The iD4 would also be a great pick IF the software worked. But it doesn’t, so it’s a non-starter.

totally with you on the ID4. Ordered and ID4 pro S summer. After months if waiting, was informed the car will come from Tennessee. Okay, great, will get the tax credit. Then you find out they took out the heat pump. What else did they strip from the European ID4? Software fix?... no that still not addressed. Didn't feel like paying $50K for a lemon. I have a Tesla model 3 for our first EV, the second one will not be a Tesla. The ones I'm considering are not available due to low supply or $15K markup. Called VW and asked if I can order one from Germany...her response was we'll be happy to help you cancel the order.

Alex, you've been an EV owner for many years and regarded as very knowledgeable about most aspects of EV's. I believe that you have totally missed the most important aspect of buying an EV. Taking info from your good friend Tom's video, you fail to inform prospective EV purchasers of the pitfall in buying non-Tesla vehicles. You see it's all about infrastructure, being able to conveniently charge your vehicle when needed. Other manufactures don't seem to be too concerned about infrastructure and the problem will get a lot worse in the coming months. The result is that many new buyers of EV will eventually be turned off by the lack of available charging facilities. I am a 5 year Tesla owner and I feel sorry for those purchasers who invest all their money in Non-Tesla vehicles. I believe it will take five years for EV charging to reach the level of Tesla's. It takes a lot of money to build infrastructure and Tesla has done it right way.
