Top 3 Rejected Products That Made Millions | Vol.2 | Dragons' Den

Ойын-сауық

Our multi-millionaire Dragons may think they're shrewd enough to spot a lucrative business opportunity when it's pitched right in front of their eyes, but they don't always get it right and, every so often, the rejects get the last laugh.
These are the Top 3 Dragons' Den rejects that went on to make millions:
00:01 - #1 Martin Wadsworth, managing director of DiscreteHeat is in the Den seeking £150,000 in return for a 10% equity stake.
13:29 - #2 Natalie Ellis is pitching 'The Road Refresher' - a non-spill dog bowl. She's seeking £120,000 for 15%.
23:55 - #3 Shane Lake & Tony Charles are pitching 'Hungryhouse' - a website for local take-aways. They're seeking an investment of £100,000 for 11%.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Sure but it's easy to apply that logic to a wildly successful company with hindsight, but think of the thousands of companies who have gone bankrupt because of issues related to patents, cash flow, unproven concepts, undefined target audiences, poor branding, etc. Whether they invested in Apple or Microsoft or not, they wouldn't be down money, which is the most important thing. Also, I wouldn't say the Dragons are "risk-adverse" per se, they just require a proof of concept; after all, they're only millionaires, they're not Musk or Bezos lol

What? The criticisms were very on point. Mainly, if it's so good of a product, then why has he invested 400k, and is still on a loss. As they've said... if he couldn't make a profit out of 400k, what would 150k be? And at 10% stake... just how long would it take for them to get the return again on ONE HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND. If it was a smaller ask, I bet they would've offered a deal. But 150k is asking for too much on a business that's still on a loss.

I agree 100%. It's like the dragons think the people who walk in should be grateful for a £100k investment... an amount of money that literally any high street bank would lend to anyone on a £25k salary. Bizarre the way they talk to him. The good entrepreneurs going in don't need a single penny of investment, they need the connections or they want to avoiding mistakes that successful people have already made and they are smart enough to realise they would rather own a percentage of something instead of 100% of nothing. This clip was back in 2008 though and it was a completely different world back then for quite a few reasons.

Just for the record, Hungry house sold for 200m and 40m bonus in Dec 2016, 100k investment for 20 million 10 years is insane returns and could have been even bigger if it had a dragon with them early on.

That radiator baseboard is a brilliant idea and I don't understand why the guy didn't offer the angle of installing it during the construction of the house or apartment complex. That could have changed everything because when The Dragons would have obviously asked why you'd do it if the price is higher, they could have responded by pointing out that there are people who care about form over price.

Exactly. It's not a retrofitted product. It could be installed in all new homes. I just wonder if it has the ability to push out enough heat and if it were dangerous to children accidently touching the skirting board.

I don’t necessarily agree with Theo, simply because the guy can raise funds in addition to his £400k capital injection at times of filming, shouldn’t always dictate an immediate out as most pitching requires the experience and contact of a dragon. On occasion this could be secondary to the actual investment funds.

alot has changed for Hungry House, but one thing I did notice in this is the use of the word "Fax" and concerns about the restaurants paying. It is very easy to look at the market now and say the Dragons missed out, BUT on the business pitched, you can see why the deal never happened. Had they pitched it with "live link" then yeah it would be easy to say the Dragons made a mistake.

  • @JohnCashin

Some of the excuses the Dragons came up with for not investing in some of those peoples ideas sounded irrational to me. Like Theo asking the heating guy, Martin, if he himself could find a few thousand to invest in an idea and because he said 'yes' Theo then turned around and said "ah, well you don't need me then so I'm out". What utter nonsense. The guy was just answering the question hypothetically, it doesn't mean he couldn't use an investor himself in the moment!
