The Seige of Vicksburg is known as the turning point of the Civil War. The Confederacy was winning the war up until General Pemberton surrendered to General Grant. The Union took control of the river and basically starved them into surrendering. It actually cut the Confederate army in half, allowing the Union to ultimately win the war. Interesting fact: It was on July 4, 1863, when they surrendered and the City of Vicksburg did not celebrate the 4th of July for the next 81 years.

The confederacy wasn't actually winning the war. The union was pretty much winning the western theatre and the eastern theatre was much more a status quo since the confederacy fought a defensive battle.

My greaat uncle was a leader of the Jewish community in Vicksburg, owned a plumbing business and lived until 1972 or so. His name was Morris Rothstein. Did you ever hear of him? He was called "Mister Mose."

I was born and lived in Vicksburg until I was 15. At 5:33 you see the opening to the flood wall along the river. When I was a kid, during the flood of 1973 they had the wall closed off but they had a ramp where you could walk up there and see the swollen Old Man River going by.

Hi holly! So much to do. Check out the national military park and riverfront in Vicksburg. Also down the road be sure to check out the ghost town of Rodney Mississippi. Awesome little place. There are also a few casinos in Vicksburg if you are into that. Speaking of ghosts the McRaven house in Vicksburg is a really awesome place to check out. As far as eating I really couldn’t tell you but there are a lot of shops and restaurants downtown. I hope you have a great time!
