The list is the top games that reinvented games. It’s the ones who trail blazes as the first and most influential. RE4 just copied what others have done before but made improvements. It didn’t reinvent anything. If anything you could argue for the first RE making the list. It practically created the survival horror genre.

@@thebalderthor4884 Dude, the list is "REinvent" not "invent". If it was "invent" then none of the games in the video would be on the list. RE4 didn't invent 3rd person shooters, but it paved the way to pretty much all modern 3rd person shooters. Same for Doom and 1st person shooters. (No, it wasn't the first, but it was one of the most influential. Same with RE4 and 3rd person shooters. And Doom was on the list.)

Gran Turismo 1 on PS1 arguably changed racing games for consoles. Before GT1, they were all arcade-like with time limits, cartoonish mechanics/premises, and sometimes health bars. GT1 allowed NAME BRAND cars, upgradeable parts, lengthy races, and realistic tracks (for the time in 1997).

Yes GT1 certainly deserves a mention on this list. There were truly no real driving simulators before this and most Sim racers today actually mention GT1 as the game/franchise that started it all for them. One could even argue that it's the game that truly started it all for that genre.

You left off the biggest impact Final Fantasy VII had on gaming: it was gaming's first Summer Blockbuster. FFVII's cinematic presentation set it apart from the industry at the time and convinced everyone to start taking video games seriously as a storytelling medium. It's iconic opening shot of Midgar is specifically identified as a turning point in gaming in this regard. It's a major reason why the marketing campaign for the game had more in common with the movie industry at the time than it did with video games. And the industry hasn't been the same since.

Night Trap was equally responsible for the ratings system. There was a time when you could turn on the news and were guaranteed to see gameplay videos of both Night Trap and Mortal Kombat. In fact they used to play the same clip of Night Trap a lot. The Augers would close in around a girl and then the clip would end and they implied it got worse from there. When in reality all the augers did was drag the girl off camera. At that time the news helped sell a ton of copies of Night Trap, which if not for the controversy it would have just disappeared unnoticed. The gameplay was terrible even for a fmv game. Also as far as Street Fighter 2 combos go at once point Capcom looked at combos as a glitch giving players what they thought of as an unfair advantage. The same with move canceling which are now staples of fighting games.

@@benw3029 The first System Shock came out in 1994. That made it a pre-Windows 95 game...so it came with the limitations therein...bad resolution, non-standard FPS controls of keyboard and mouse, etc. Importantly, the late 90s were when hardware accelerated graphics (VooDoo cards) raised the standards of gaming as we know it. System Shock 2 was 1999 and it made great use of that technology. And to me, that made the game MUCH more immersive. In truth, I only played a little of the first game AFTER playing SS2, and thus I can't really say much about it other than the above recollection. So, to me, it's like playing Wolfenstein 3D vs. Quake. But I do know that from a story standpoint, the original was highly-regarded. Because of that, there is an "enhanced version" of that title produced in 2015 that got an 86 on Metacritic and seems to have some positive reviews, but I can't say personally. It's supposed to fix the FPS controls, increased the resolution, and basically make the game playable on modern systems. The same company that did the remake, Night Dive Studios, was supposed to be working on a total redo of the game based on the Unreal 4 engine, but I haven't heard much about progress on that...if at all. Incidently, System Shock 2 is a 92 on Metacritic by comparison. I played that game several times back in the day choosing different RPG styles each time...it was just so brilliant. I'd LOVE a System Shock 3, which was also rumored at one point, but who knows if any of that will come out. BTW, a note about Deus Ex which came out in 2000. It was amazing, even winning PCGamer Magazines Game of the Year. But the sequels disappointed me greatly because they were ports from the console versions (I'm a PC gamer). I was so let down by that.

Otherwise for all the comments like "I'm surprised ===== wasn't on the list!" - the list is only a top 20 and its all in their opinion: I could probably come up with another 20 games off the top of my head that weren't on this list that should have been. Even before _Doom_ tripled the sales of IBM (compatible) PCs, indie games were being made on computers like the Commodore 64 around a decade earlier. Back in those days, people published their games listings in magazines or books for other people to type out and play. If you want some honourable mentions, there's _Zork_ for popularising the text adventure genre (from which the visual novel spawned) and _Rogue_ from which the Rogue-like and Rogue-lite genres spawned-notable for having procedurally generated maps.
