I don't understand the hype over Forrest Gump. It was like a long film about pure luck of a dumb but golden hearted man. I was thoroughly disappointed with this film and would rather watch anything else than Forrest Gump once again. :/ Schindler's list - watched it, will never watch again. :/ It's great but emotional wrecker. I'd also probably add Green Mile as one of those films that you can only watch once, if you are on the sensitive side of life.

I agree. Someone without balls made the list
Some other choices: Rashomon: The film that did what you professed Parasite did (opened up Asian cinema to a wider audience) and it also led to the creation of the best foreign film category and influenced films such as Memento and The Usual Suspects. Double Indemnity - arguably the best film noir. Persona - ground zero for art house identity crisis. The predecessor of 3 Women and Mulholland Drive. Paris, Texas - German New Wave comes to America (I know part of The American Friend was filmed in NYC) and climaxes with one of the best double monologues ever put to film. Lawrence of Arabia - one of the 2 greatest epics ever made. The other being Seven Samurai Taxi Driver - it's influence is still being felt today. Nightcrawler would be a good recent example. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - won the big 5 Oscars. Has 2 incredible lead performances and one of the greatest endings of all time.

He seemed so young in _10 Things I Hate About You,_ Disney’s take on the William Shakespeare comedy, meaning a story with a happy ending, in this case, _The Taming of the Shrew._ The basis for the original is that once the sharp-tongued Katherina is married, Bianca, her younger and much more polite sister, can follow suit, as dictated by their father. Hailing from Verona, Kate’s suitor, Petruchio, does everything he can to win Kate over: allowing her as little sleep as possible, destruction of personal property, you name it. This may have been the norm in the Bard’s time, but at least _10 Things_ didn’t take it *that* far.

Even so, I'd put Hero in its place for some of the fights, as well as taking narrative cues from Kurosawa's Rashomon. Any one of Ikiru, Ran or Rashomon could have been in place of Seven Samurai, and I wouldn't have complained. I would have thought something like Tokyo Story or Seventh Seal could have been on here too, as they're both critics' favourites.

These lists are always interesting (and personal), and you did a nice job of narrowing it down to 20. Always glad to see what others consider their favorites. I'm glad you didn't confine yourself to more contemporary films, and even included a foreign film. My own personal top 20 would include more foreign films (at the very least, Bergman's The Seventh Seal and Truffaut's Jules and Jim); in addition, I would definitely have to add Dr. Strangelove, Network (because what seemed like outrageous satire is all coming true!), and Goodfellas. And one more that probably not too many have seen: Spike Lee's Bamboozled, which make be the most uncomfortable movie you will ever see, but is also the most trenchant and uncompromising look at racism in the entertainment industry.
I'd say The Farewell could be one cause of it's sad yet heart warming story and cause for me it is where I learned about the difference in cultural views of when someone is dying. How in America we tell the person they are dying, but in some other countries they don't
Layer Cake, Watchmen, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, The Departed, There Will Be Blood, The Social Network, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Trilogy), The Gentlemen, Blood Diamond, Crank, X-Men Series, Gangs Of Wasseypur 1 & 2, Delhi Belly, Rockstar, Rock On.

I'd also like to add to this list ... "Alien," a great film for sci-fi fans and anyone who enjoys a good haunted house story ... "Ghostbusters," for being original and funny ... "Back to the Future," for being one of the most original films of its time, funny and heartwarming and adventurous all at once. I also have to add "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan" because of how it brought some serious darkness and human depth to the crew of the Enterprise. Damn, while I'm at it, I'm surprised that "Jaws" didn't make the cut here, as it is an incredibly effective horror film that also bears the distinction of being something that could actually happen, thereby scaring the crap out of anyone thinking about going out for a swim at the beach.

Epic in scope and highly romantic in style, it was amazingly shot during Nazi occupation, which makes it all the more stupendous.

I wouldn’t mind if all three of those you just mentioned were on the list LOL😁 Both Vertigo and Psycho are in my top 3 favorite movies……..
I think inception also deserve a place in this list.
I would definitely add Chinatown and On the waterfront as well as Rosemary’s baby and The best years of our lives. Overall this was a great list, however, and I’d agree that all of those mentioned are great movies

Definitely 12 Angry Men.
I’ve seen The Breakfast Club, Singin’ In the Rain, The Dark Knight, Toy Story, The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Star Wars: A New Hope, and The Wizard of Oz
Dark Knight is the movie we deserve to see but not the one we need to see.
The Bridge over the River Kawai is a classic must see!!!!
Unfortunately, the song Singin' in the Rain is forever connected in my mind to the film, A Clockwork Orange. That film should be on this list.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind doesn't even get an honorable mention? Game changing movie that had a huge influence not only in cinema but popular culture. And that theme...
This really needs to be a top 100 list. So many amazing movies not mentioned.

Im sure I missed a few
other then Parisite i have seen all of these, for me i would add the following - including 2 cartoons 1. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade & Radiers of the Lost Ark 2. Titanic (James Cameron version) 3. Infinity Wars/Endgame 4. Terminator 1 and 2 5. the 1986 Transformers Animated movie -- so much better then any live action Transformer movie 6. Spiderman (Tobby's 1st one) 7. a 1984 animated japanese movie called "Macross: Do you remember Love" - just watch it for the animation alone, but you also get a good story for it's time 8. Glory 9. Back to the Future (all 3) 10. Jurassic Park (1st one only) 11. Jaws 12. Saving Private Ryan

"The Exorcist" was the scariest book I ever read way back in high school in 1973. Before I ever saw the movie. Hands down scared the shit out of me.
@jenniferbond7073

Gah! I don’t think I could handle it if it’s scarier than the movie. It took many times to make it through the movie and each time would be scared for weeks. A lot of it was the visuals. One that still is so unsettling even tho nothing is happening is the Virgin Mary screen, I’m not a very religious person but that was just awful. What was scarier about the book? Very curious.

I would definitely say "12 angry men"
I've seen all of these except Modern Times and Singing In The Rain and I didn't love any of them. Not sure I even liked majority of them. Here's my list: Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs Trainspotting 12 Angry Men Back To The Future Inception or Memento Everything Everywhere All At Once The Deer Hunter Ferris Bueller's Day Off A Clockwork Orange Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Whiplash Alien Schindler's List Terminator 2: Judgement Day A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood Shaun of the Dead Grave of the Fireflies Bo Burnham: Inside Thunder Road Fargo Pan's Labyrinth

Sadly I'm spoiled by color-vision moviez, seriez and special effects, so I have trouble enjoying b&w movies, ofc with exceptions. And ofc must-see movie choices are very subjective, I like old westerns and bud spencer & terence hill movies a lot mostly because I watched them as kid with my father who passed away 20yrs ago. What's the best watchlist-sharing site so I can find people with the same taste and find must-see-movies I haven't seen yet? IMDB? Thanks :))
Back to the future should be on here
I've seen 11 of these (and Wizard of Oz is one of my fav movies ♥). The thing is I know I've seen The Dark Knight and Star Wars, but I don't remember them quite well. Almost as if I haven't seen them. Same goes for Fellowship, although I remember more of it because I've read the first book lol.

I think the pirates of the Caribbean trilogy should get a shoutout here
The Peter Jackson LOTR movies, in my personal opinion
The original Planet of the apes, was a captivating movie I would like to see on the list
I hate how the movie industry is dying, right when the cameras and CGI are pretty much top notch too 😢 I don’t think the movies of this era will be considered classics at any point in the future
My (you have to see) not mentioned here, list: -Metropolis -TRON (First CGI Movie) -The Shawshank Redemption -The Thing -Schindler's List -Papillon -The Green Mile - Come and See (Very realistic movie, not for the faint hearted. W list
Very good list, marred by the GLARING omissions of Pulp Fiction (absolutely essential for film - and culture - of the last 30 years) and Citizen Kane, which I was POSITIVE would be #1. These are both very disappointing, especially considering how good the rest of the list is. ETA: you really need to have either Snow White or The Little Mermaid in there, too. I'm not a big fan, but Disney animation is absolutely essential to the film experience. I'd also add The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and Bride of Frankenstein, but I would not have expected these.
I would also add The Princess Bride, and one film from mel brooks (really any film) as well as a Monty Python film too
Gone w the Wind is one of my absolute favorites!!! Watched it straight thru one night. All 4hrs of it. Star Wars is an incredible movie!! Nothing will touch that movie as far as space movies go
Schindler's list, saving private Ryan, Forrest Gump, The silence of the lambs, the shining will be there in my list.

A Bridge too far - The bridge on the River Kwai - Tora Tora Tora - Saving Private Ryan - Battle of the Buldge - Midway - The Great Escape - Escape from Sobibor - Das Boot - The Longest Day - Inglourious Basterds - Schindler's List. This is a tough but great list. I've seen them all... and most, if not all, changed cinema. Others that could be here in no particular order: The Matrix (1999) Children of Men (2006) T2 (1997) American Beauty (1999) Forest Gump (1994) Titanic (1997) Eternal of the Spotless Mind (2004) The Shining (1980) Glory (1989) Saving Private Ryan (1998) No Country for Old Men (2007) Jurassic Park (1993) Shawshank Redemption (1994) Pan's Labyrinth (2006) Inception (2010) Pulp Fiction (1994) These might not have changed cinema, but they were all amazing.
Come And See is definitely a movie everyone should watch no matter what. The realism and trauma of the movie is something the movie industry probably wont be able to beat in a very long time.
