Top 15 UNDERHYPED/UNDERRATED Fantasy Series... That Rarely Gets Mentioned!
Ойын-сауық
Hi everyone! Today's video will be about the top 15 best fantasy series that rarely get mentioned or underhyped fantasy series that deserves more attention. Unlike my usual videos, though, this is NOT my personal list. This time, the list is compiled from 300 fantasy reader's responses in my community tab and Twitter account:

It took me hours and days to compile data, record, and edit this video. I hope it will be beneficial to some of you!

I don't like when you do videos like this, because it adds to my already massive TBR! Out of this list, I've read Codex Alera, The Long Price Quartet, The Banished Lands Saga, and Ash and Sand Trilogy. I do have The Last War, Rivers of London, The Five Warrior Angels, Wars of Light and Shadow, and Shadows of the Apt on my TBR already. As for doing an overhyped video, I think that's a good idea as long as you use the same format that you did for this one.

Hahaha whoops! And hey, you've read some here, James! Well done. The Five Warrior Angels and The Last War trilogy are amazing. If I do end up making overhyped video, I will certainly do it in a format like this! :)
Anything John Gwynne for me is now an auto buy. He is my favourite author ever. In terms of recent reads then I found the last War by Mike shackle absolutely outstanding and I can’t understand why it is not more popular.

This was amazing, Petrik! Thank you for bringing attention to all these series through an ambitious outreach project! I do wonder how much the algorithm plays a role in these series not seeming to get mentioned much. For example, I saw the Mask of Mirrors book mentioned on a ton of channels I was following last year (I started feeling some FOMO), but none of those channels have nearly as many subscribers as Elliot Brooks. That said, it’s wonderful that you’re brining attention to these series on your channel, which continues to grow for good reason 😊.

This was definitely worth your while, Petrik. Such a great resource! It's heartening to see a few self-pub series mentioned multiple times on this list, too. Oh my goodness, what a genius video idea, Petrik! You reminded me of Fantasy series I hadn't officially added to my TBR list yet, or put other ones on my radar! Now I have 34 books on that list (most of them are series 🤡), really need to catch up but my local library has almost none of them. I can still rely on my Kindle, but some of them are so gorgeous with maps and illustrations, it's a shame reading them virtually! 😢 And I can't have too many books - and I have too many already - as we're moving to another country next year. The struggle is real 😅 I might just crack and buy The Longprice Quartet online. I found a bind up of the 2 first books. 👀

Thank you very much! Yeah, I tend to read from my Kindle unless it has illustrations. Then I settle for physical copy hahaha. The 2 bind up volumes of Long Price Quartet are the one I own! I hope you'll love the series. It's a slow burn but worthwhile, imo! 😊
Great video. Surprisingly, I have read part of or all of eight of these series. Perhaps the most under rated is Janny Wurts. Her Empire series is wonderful, however, her Wars of Light and Shadows is excellent and quite complex but where Malazan just drops you in, Wurts makes the entrance into the series a bit easier. I'm really surprised that the Dandelion Dynasty books were not mentioned, I read the Grace of Kings and must get back to them. I am also looking forward to Durfee's conclusion in November.

I definitely concur with the Redick, Durfee, and Shackle recommendations. Exceptional authors. And I think the Richard Nell and Robert Jackson Bennett trilogies will have to move up my TBR after this video. As a lover of grimdark I found the Lady Trent series a bit too whimsical. Not bad just not for me. I loved the first four Tchaikovsky books, but found the next two a struggle, so I never finished the series. Great recommendations and quite a few books that end up on my reading list. I actually began reading Janny Wurts' series back in the day when it began to be published, and the more or less enjoyed the first couple of books. I think it was by Grand Conspiracy, however, that her prose style began to feel way too flowery and purple for my taste - I can't recall quite why, but I remember being actually angry about it. Which was a shame, because the plotline was quite fascinating at the time (although nowadays it would perhaps feel less fresh, I fear). I really enjoyed the Empire Trilogy she wrote with Raymond E. Feist, though, that was a fantastic series.

Thank you so much! Ah, that's too bad, but I also think that's a understandable and valid reason on why the series ended up not working for you. Grand Conspiracy is book 5, let's see how I'll feel when I get there someday. Glad we agree that Empire trilogy is amazing, though! :D

My favorite is City of Miracles, but the entire trilogy is great! 😊
Don't know if you've read it yet but The Lotlands trilogy by Jonathan French is another great underrated series. It's got some of the best, most intense action scenes in this genre and some very interesting takes on some stock fantasy races, half-orcs in particular. Despite that, it barely gets talked about anywhere on social media.

I blame the cover art for that one. I REALLY enjoy The Grey Bastards, and I still need to continue with the series. But I know the ugly new cover art has stopped many readers from starting the series in the first place. 🙃
Ash and Sand by Richard Nell is incredible! One of my absolute favourites. I'm convinced that there is a 100% onverlap between people who enjoy books by Abercrombie and Nell. Also, I can highly recommend reaing Rivers of London via audiobook. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith does an amazing job, on a par with James Marsters in Dresden Files. What I'm missing here is Manifest Delusions by Michael R. Fletcher.

The Legacy Trilogy by Matthew Ward, the Echoes Saga by Philip C. Quaintrell, the Winnowing Flame Trilogy by Jen Williams, The Shadow Campaigns by Django Wexler and Gods of Blood and Powder by Brian McClellan should be on the list. They're all absolutely amazing. Legacy and Echoes are actually in my top 5 fave series of all time, and Winnowing Flame and Blood and Powder in my top 10. It's truly a shame that none of these are that well-known. Great list! You know what I think of Legacy (I've read only the first book), Echoes Saga, and Winnowing Flame trilogy; I agree that these are VERY underhyped and underrated. Shadow Campaigns as well. But I do agree that somehow it doesn't get mentioned often!
