I Asked 300 Readers What Their Top 10 UNDERHYPED/UNDERRATED Fantasy Series Are!

Ойын-сауық

Hi everyone! Today's video will be about the top 10 best fantasy series that rarely get mentioned (or underhyped fantasy series) that deserve more attention. Unlike my usual videos, though, this is NOT my personal list. This time, the list is compiled from 300 fantasy reader's responses in my community tab and Twitter account:
- • Post

Due to high demand, this is a continuation of a similar video I posted last month: • Top 15 UNDERHYPED/UNDE...
The purpose of this video is to highlight some incredible fantasy series, regardless of high or low ratings and popularity, that somehow rarely get mentioned. Let me know what you think about this list! How many of these have you read? And thank you so much to everyone who participated in helping this video to fruition. It took me hours and days to compile data, record, and edit this video. I hope it will be beneficial to some of you!

The most Underrated novel in my opinion "Umineko". Its in the visual novel format. Without spoiling its something like this: - think of "and then there were none" + Fantasy + Psychological stuff - metatexual - story takles Human problems/conflicts and stuff - touch of romance and drama ‐ mystery is its main focus (reason why I have to vague) You should definitely try it if you like murder mystery, mystery, character driver plot, and layers on the story. Your gonna love it Dont wanna spoil so ill just say its a Very unique story. your expectations get blown away. Has a amazing soundtrack. Its a emotional, wild, fun ride. Theirs so much layers in the story too. Visual novels aren't a popular medium outside of japan so unfortunatly its format doesn't make it stand out to readers in general

Petrik I highly recommend checking out Worm. At the risk of overhyping it, it ruined superhero fiction for me. 1) The battles are as epic as anything you'll see in the best of fantasy and have actual lasting consequences. 2) I have yet to see what this series did with superpowers replicated anywhere near as well. Not only were the powers unique in their nature and origins, but an emphasis is placed on how superpowers affect the mindset of the user and how society views people with certain powers. Finally the way some of these powers are used by the characters were insanely creative. 3) Speaking of Characters, Worm has a lot of them and they're all so memorable. The main cast is fantastically written and your opinions of them will change wildly as the story progresses. The only big cons are that A)There are points were the story gets very bleak(some would argue needlessly so) and B)Since it's a Web serial, the prose isn't anything special. Expect more Brandon Sanderson than Guy Gavriel Kay.

For me, Richard Nell's stories of Ash and Sand are terribly underrated. I think if the series had more humor, that series could be up there with Abercrombie. I think Malazan is interesting because we generally like things that are familiar and accessible like Disney/Pixar Movies. Malazan is a challenging read and depending on one's patience and fantasy reading proficiency play a large factor. So, if it's not easily accessible, it's something esoteric and has its own sub-section of the genre.

If anything Malazan is overhyped, in my opinion. It's often given a blanket recommendation which seems like a recipe for failure to me. I am loving it, but don't expect most people to, really. It's not easy to read, it's rough and exhausting emotionally, and it's super long, just to mention a few of the detractions. Sad to see Earthsea not mentioned as much in fantasy circles despite being foundational. I'll never be unhappy with a list that includes LeGuin, she's a master storyteller and one of the greatest prose stylist of all time. Tales From Earthsea is the only Ghibli I haven't watched, no need to subject myself to a bad version of a beloved story. I agree on KJ Parker, low-key one of the most unique voices in the genre. @@PetrikLeo well, you’ll understand why Harry Potter made lots of money, (because she got the temp, ate here, or, well, it’s a classic trope) and also why she’s a terrible writer (in my opinion) Garion came before Harry. Eddings’ writing is great in that when you pick up the book, you’re no longer holding a book, reading words, you’re just transported there. Mental imagery just unfolds. Witty, funny, memorable characters. It’s funny especially in the first book, he almost makes fun of the typical (well, now typical) “Land Of Ye Olde” even in style, then when the pretense starts falling away and things get revealed, the style changes..I used to think “the first book takes a bit to get going,” but now that I’m older, I do believe it’s all entirely on purpose. My favorite books of all time, (although Dune and Tolkien did make a big impression) including the ones that come after, like Polgara the Sorceress and Belgarath..oh..I have to find my books so I can read again!

Malazan underhyped/underrated? In what world? 😅 I can't say I agree with that one. It's my understanding that The Earthsea Cycle is considered a classic, but admittedly I never read or hear a lot of readers recommending it or even talking about it...then again, I don't interact with that many readers either. Lynn Flewelling's Tamir Triad will always remain one of my most favorite and beloved series of all time. The Nightrunner didn't do it for me and I was really sad about that; couldn't get past the first half of the second book and not for lack of trying: I tried 3 times at least and read the first one twice in spite of not liking it. One element that might have contributed to readers giving up, in my opinion, was the way over the top complicated names. Unreadable names, impossible to commit to memory with several apostrophes. It was absurd.

Greenbone book 1 came out in 2018 and has 35k ratings and a 4.11 average. So in 4 years it’s gotten 1/3 as many ratings so it’s on track to be just as big as Malazan when it’s been around longer.
