    Dude learn what is history as a category, if you think you can create better list create it dont just rage on internet. • @HoriaNeagu

    @HoriaNeagu

    6 жыл бұрын

    No need to throw a tantrum, my good man. I wasn't "raging on the internet", as you so unceremoniously put it. I was merely remarking upon the complete lack of historical accuracy of the movies presented. "The Pathfinder" features Norsemen with horned skull-shaped helmets and their general design and attitude is more akin to the fantasy trope of the barbarian than actual Norsemen. "The Prince of Persia" is 100% fantasy, based on a video game. "300"? Do you honestly believe that the Spartans went into the battle of Thermopylae with exposed pectoral muscles, instead of the widely known Spartan armour? Or that they battled an army of Persian orcs? Or that Xerxes was a tall, nipple-pierced hermaphrodite, who commanded war mastodons? Even the title of the comic-book-turned-movie is wrong. The Spartans weren't the only ones fighting Xerxes that day, they were part of a united Greek army that counted around 7,000 warriors. "The 13th Warrior" is an action film, very loosely based on ibn Fadlan's more adventurous claims about his time spent with the Rus. "King Arthur" is just ridiculous. The leather trousers, the use of archery, the silly battle scenes, the moronic armour... it's just a laughable attempt. It's fantasy and it's not even good fantasy. It has nothing to do with history. As David Edelstein pointed out in an article for Slate, the movie is "profoundly stupid and inept". The less said about "Braveheart", the better. Mel Gibson utterly sacrifices any semblance of historicity in order to tell the story he wants to tell. From the complete butchering of historical characters (including Robert the Bruce, Edward I and even William Wallace himself), to perpetuating silly myths (like the droit du seigneur, or primae noctis) to completely misconstruing historical events, the film is a disaster from start to finish. Oh, and those supposedly medieval kilts? Yeah, that's an 18th century invention. Literally nothing in this film is historically accurate. Everything is either anachronistic or a flat-out lie. "Apocalypto" gets pretty much everything wrong. From their confusion between Maya and Aztec, to their completely mixed up timelines of the interaction between the natives and Europeans. The Mayan costumes are just pure fantasy loosely based on Mexica garb. This is what I meant when I said that most of these movies are entirely fictional, most of them are pretty much fantasy tales retelling dumb myths and tropes that have pervaded popular culture for decades. Sadly, Hollywood does a generally poor job of portraying ancient and medieval times. However, there are a few notable exceptions. Bare in mind, they're far from perfect, but at least they don't fall into the same dumb cliches regarding fight scenes, armour, costume and events like most of the ones featured on your list. A more proper list would include such works as: "Aravt", translated into English as "Genghis: The Legend of the Ten", a contained historical movie, with great character chemistry and some pretty nasty battle scenes in the later half. Solid character building, good dialogue, but sadly a stale turn in the third act. Still, well worth watching a couple of times. The 1968 version of "The Lion in Winter". Although this film glamourises the era almost to an extreme and the events are largely fictitious, it does a fair job of portraying the political struggles and machinations of the age. "Alexander". This one is a tragic irony: a historically accurate film that is sadly boring. It is a snoozefest where not a lot happens, but it is surprisingly authentic. Great job on the part of the filmmakers at portraying the ancient world and the life of Alexander the Great. "Agora" is a stunning biopic highlighting the life of one of the most celebrated thinkers of her age - Hypatia. Kurosawa's "Ran" is worth mentioning as well. A fictional, but authentic retelling of the story of Mori Motonari and an evocation of the late medieval Sengoku period. Other Kurosawa movies, like "Rashomon" might also be worth including. "Ten To Chi To" (or "Heaven and Earth") deserves a shout-out, for fairly accurate presentations of costumes, art and architecture of 16th century Japan. It takes place well after the Middle Ages, but, as previously mentioned, there isn't an abundance of historically accurate (or authentic) ancient / medieval movies to go around. Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev" brilliantly explores the life of an artist living under a culturally repressive regime, as well as examining the importance of autodidactism for those under authoritarian rule. This is far from a biopic, as the life of Rublev is highly fictionalised (there are no surviving primary sources), but it does a good job of portraying the complexity of medieval Russian rural society and the confused superstitions, which were at times more of a hybrid between Orthodoxy and pagan beliefs. All in all, a visually stunning arthouse-style metaphor for the ultimate condition of the artist. "The Admiral: Roaring Currents". Again, it's nigh-medieval, being a retelling of the battle of Myeongnyang, focusing on the real-life legendary general Yi Sun-sin. A great depiction of naval battles and military strategy of the age. The battles are certainly a bit exaggerated for dramatic effect, but admittedly it is a great effort at reconstructing the age it portrays. Bonus tip: "War of the Arrows". This is a great action movie, but it is sadly set after the second Manchu invasion of Korea, so not really medieval. But still a great movie. Hope this list helps. Cheers!

    Just some example of well depicted historical films that did not make their way into your list: Joan of Arc (XV cent - Luc Besson, 1999), The name of the Rose (XIV cent -Jean-Jacques Annaud, 1986), Flesh and Blood (XV cent - Paul Verhoeven, 1985), and those are just a few. If you like a historical film you got to watch more of this genre.

    Have you ever watch Red Cliff (China) and The Admiral Roaring Current (Korea)? The Great Battle (Korea) also a good medieval war movie, full of battle, less drama. Kingdom of Heaven also a great movie. And I will not make a ranking list of them. They are all very good!!

    Some of these films are just Hollywood recreations of Pc Games (Prince of Persia) or Comic books (300). Beowulf is complete fantasy story based on an IX century poem. You should revisit your list. Choose films that are at least somewhat related to real historical era, there are a ton out there that could easily be a better fit.
