Top 10 Worst Weapons/Armor I ever Bought! HORRIBLE!

My GOSH the cringe! The cringe level is stellar here but hey! We all learn from our mistakes right?
Over the years I have been collection more and more weapons and armour of all sorts. I'm very content with the majority of my purchase, but these 10, THESE 10 are the absolute worst purchases of my life. Selling these out has been a very high priority for me of course, and luckly I managed to get rid of most of these, and get atleast some of the money I spent on them back but I wish I had someone tell me what not to do back in the day. That's the reason why I made this video so here we are! I hope you can always use your hard worked money to get stuff that you will use for many years to come and that can make you happy and content. Always go for a better quality item, even if in order to get it you have to wait. It's always better to settle for quality over quantity.

    Wait 15 €?! I wouldn't even buy a wall hanger at that price, granted my mother taught that it's often expensive to "buy cheap" (using a saying her mother had said to her), while they weren't talking about swords. generally there's a price range below which you really shouldn't buy since the quality is gonna be crap and you're gonna end just buying another to replace the first one when it breaks (not "if" but rather "when") and thus end up paying more then you would have paid for a decent quality one. EDIT:It would be nice if you could make a video discussing what in your option is the good minimum price for a decent budget choice for a starting collector.

  • @jamesd6785

    @jamesd6785

    3 жыл бұрын

    Agreed. You can do in with select items, but never arms and armor. The budget range is extremely variable depending on maker and type of sword. If the maker is reputable, it often puts new ones somewhere about $400-1000 USD plus or minus in my area for decent/great quality swords depending on type. Best to research the maker, sword type, and go from there. You can find some usable swords for a couple or few hundred on ocassion.

    I just play airsoft, so i'm not an re-enactor. But one thing I learned pretty quick is that it's definitely worth to save up for mil-spec gear rather than buying cheaper replicas. Granted, some things you can skimp on (like individual magazine pouches) but others you really want the real deal (plate carriers, chest rigs, backpacks, battle dress uniforms etc.) It's worth getting the expensive mil-spec items because you only have to buy them once. You can be very punishing towards them, and they'll still be intact, no matter what. So that big investment pays off compared to having to replace replicas that constantly break down on you. I'd imagine medieval arms and armour are subject to the same rule.

    I rarely comment, but I just wanted to say... I have a profound respect for your attitude in your videos nowadays, Metatron. It takes a lot of bravery and honesty to be willing to stand up in front of your audience and say, "Hey, I was wrong before. I wasn't educated enough in what I was speaking about. Let's take a look back at that thing I said or showed you." It's clear evidence of integrity. As a fellow medievalist who has had a similar journey to yours (and who is always learning and growing!) I appreciate your sincerity and willingness to revisit the past. I think that is such an important factor of our growth in what we do. Keep up the good work. I've really come to enjoy your videos over the past year. Oh, and my journey with armor also began with an unfortunate purchase of some horrendous Lorica Segmentata! It might have even been that exact one you had! I suppose we have to start somewhere... haha! Cheers!

    A Japanese buddy of mine talked me out of buying one of those goofy Highlander katanas years ago. Glad I listened. However I was given a katana that had a flat slab of metal with slight curve and no bevel for the blade, no habaki, cloth-wrapped wood saya and tsuka, and I kid you not, a tiny plastic tsuba. I kinda wished I had saved it it was so bad.

    Hah I think most weapons people go thru the phase of buying anything vaguely sword-like. For the first 3-4 years after I turned 18 I bought basically any blade that caught my fancy without even planning what I would do with it. I ended up with 30+ swords, most were cheap wall-hangers or "tacticool" blades. Eventually started reselling most of it when I started HEMA to fund gear and actual sparring swords or budget cutting swords. I do sometimes miss my pile o'swords sometimes though, but not the space they took up.

I got basically everything I have now at the time and everything else was pretty good quality,for example the arming sword I got was Darksword armory's knight sword and 13 years later it's still in good condition aside from some edge damage in one spot after A LOT of abuse.

    I love the Roman helmet so much. My first thought was of some beyond exaggerated caveman trope styled into a helmet, but then I realized it could almost be used as a baseball cap. I guarantee, though, that without all your videos and other educational content that like you said wasn't as accessible at the time, I probably wouldn't have seen a problem with it at all. Thanks for that. And thanks for your outright bravery to remind us of the height of the cringe of your early years to help us learn. I hope to learn from that and be more OK with my own youth, as cringe experiences are universal to mankind, I rather suspect.

    When I was young (@8) my Opa got me a katana for my birthday. It was beautiful. He had even paid to have it sharpened. This was in the late 70's. I went to use it with one of my Kata's that I choreographed to end with a power cut into a pine log. The first couple of times I practiced this, everything went well. When I did a practice kata the day of the event, after the power cut, the katana had developed a slight bend and twist in the blade. I was not experienced enough with real steel blades to know it was a problem. During my kata, the handle started to unravel and split just as I was making the power cut and as the blade dug into the log my hands contued the swing with the split handle in my hand and the blade still stuck in the log. How I didn't seriously hurt my hands I do not know. My instructor made light of the situation to the audience by saying my kata and form was better than the sword. I did still get a trophy for my kata based on style form, and my opa replaced the sword. I displayed the blade still stuck in the log, in my room for several years until I came home from school and the blade had fallen out on its own.

    That's a good double-Windsor on the tie. Needs a dimple, but cheers for not doing the weak single wrap. My first katana was a Han Wai high carbon. I broke it anyway and it is now a machete. I later got a very nice Daito, but it was a bit long for my height. Han Wei again, but well tempered, practical cutter plus, Wheel of Darma model. It successfully chopped coconuts that were tossed at me. No damage. I used it once to defend a domestic animal on our farm from a wild one. Despite my Kendo training, I quickly realized it was not practical against things low to the ground, and it was more of a danger to my father who was next to me. I realized that night how much more practical a spear or even stick would have been. My view of swords in the modern world is forever changed. I still have a very nice basket hilt Claymore from Windlass Steelcrafts. I was with a friend and we clashed a LOTR stainless steel Narsil against it, and to this day that giant butter knife has a huge gouge in it from where the carbon blade tapped it.

    Not a Medieval or ancient weapon, but I remember purchasing an airsoft version of the Luger P08 from my sister's boyfriend for around $70.00 CAN. I've shot it a few times & a few days later, the firing pin broke. I then learned that it wasn't maintained for years when I bought it from him. Plus, I didn't have the money to get it repaired at the time. So, I decided just to add it as a collection piece.

    I bought a katana decades ago to do katas with that was really cheap but cost $100 off EBay. Said it was full tang but first time I used it the blade sorta bent by the tsube. As I looked at it, the kashira was loose and fall off exposing a hexnut. I unscrewed it and everything fell off exposing the threaded rod that was welded to the blade where it entered the tsuka. I still have it as the blade is of good steel and the saya is made of wood.
