I'm confident that these pages are now considered an informational resource. I'm impressed by the depth and span of the information you offer each week. Yet another excellent video.

I had a 1/2 sheet of steel mounted under my tractor to protect all the small tubes and lines. It also adds a lot of ballast below the axles. Be sure to cut opening for accessing fluids and tire turning. I have a video on my channel just on the skid plate.

Design engineer here: currently working on designing a tractor. I'll run through these on my own design, but I can give my 2 cents on each of your points. 1. Trees are very good at destroying tractors. I design orchard equipment. Trees are /very/ good at destroying tractors. 2. Hydraulics at max extension are at their weakest for two reasons. Hydraulic fluid isn't really compressible, but the hoses and pipes are; they add a little bit of shock absorption. Not much, but some. At a cylinder's limits, there's no shock absorption; just metal-on-metal hard stop. The 2nd is that at maximum extension, you usually have the most extreme cases of loading. For that JD particularly, they should have had less extension; a shock load at the bucket's lip will be amplified 10x thanks to the short distance between the bucket's pivot and the cylinder's centerline. 2A. We cannot test for every situation; it's an impossible task. Even with in-house equipment, there's too many variables with how equipment can be used to fully vet a machine for every use case. Infinitely so once you include equipment made by other manufacturers. 3. Tires and wheels are usually bought off-the-shelf. Welding that extra cover on sounds easy, but requires a fabricated part, and sending both through welding, and paint. Those each increase labor time, part lead-time, and introduce opportunities for error. So should John Deere do so...probably. But that $20 of parts on each machine costs probably $100-200 to add to an off-the-shelf item. 4. Nobody likes maintenance. But it's necessary. 5. Reversing damage is more common, probably for 2 reasons. When being pulled, implements are more likely to skip over/be pulled up and over whatever they're caught on. When they're pushed, they're more likely to jam and have the whole momentum of the tractor behind that jam. 2nd, those links are a lot more likely to bend when they're being pushed on; buckling strength is a lot less than tension strength. 6. Yup, gearboxes don't like skipping gears. 7. 3-point back-hoes....similar to 2A and 5, Tractors aren't designed for it, and it can put links in compression where they're more likely to buckle 8. Lights....Trees are very good at destroying tractors. 9. Unfortunately, tractors are designed for their top speed...shipping usually ends up being an afterthought (My place only has steel panels, so it's usually less of an issue for us) 10. Undercarriage damage: trees are very good at destroying tractors.... Fortunately, my current tractor's design has the bottom with nothing but a few bolt heads exposed.

I unbolted mine and slid them lower on the rops. Hit tree branches etc when mowing. They get in the way if I put them inside when I use the hoe. They are now bungied on in "breakaway" mode.

I just wanted to thank you for your videos. I just put a deposit down on my first tractor. I’m going to be 51 in August. Since we bought the house we live in now I’ve wanted a real tractor because it’s mostly on a hill and its very difficult to make our yard decent. I’ve got limited time on any heavy equipment but your videos should help me out BIG TIME. OH I’m buying a 2013 John Deere 2032R With 1300 hours on it I’m paying $15,500 for it It has a loader and backhoe with a weight box. I’m not sure if that’s a good deal or not but I looked at smaller ones for almost the same money and I don’t think they’d be able to handle the short hill I have to drive up to the back yard. I have a lot of plans for this thing. It should make it much easier to make the yard usable!!! Skid plate to protect bottom would be great! I've had a viney weed get wrapped around my 4x4 linkage and stalks break connection in my PTO wiring and my tractor wouldn't start til I found a video to diagnose and fix the problem! Thanks for all the great videos!

As someone who owns a hydraulic shop, you wouldn't believe some of the mangled cylinders that come in. One particularly memorable one was the pair of lift cylinders off the loader on an older Deere. I Believe a 3020 (1960s 70hp ag tractor) They were using it to pick up the hitch of a utility trailer to dump gravel out. All of a sudden, BANG, and the loader dropped. It had bent both rods over 90 degrees into L shapes right where they came out of the gland end of the barrel. I probably make new rods for at least one loader cylinder a week, it's very common. Grapple cylinders are often messed up as well. Usually from someone using the top to push or rake with.

I have not had any of those problems with my tractors yet, but do try to be very careful when working with them since I invested so much money in them and don't want them damaged. I love your tips and will remember as much as I can while operating my equipment.

The second you showed that pic of a crushed JD,I knew it was a 770. Best damn tractor I have ever owned. Everything I did with it,that tractor made an excellent showing for itself. Of course I had the loader,which BTW was miles ahead of the hookup-unhook loader system JD now uses. That was a case of," if it ain't broke-don't fix it". And thanks for the video,as always,lots of useful information. Did I mention the 770 was the best damn JD I ever owned? LOL...

Great tips! Thank you. I had a tire chain on a JD4300 with a loose link hook on the rear brake linkage arm while I was snowblowing. This locked the brake and froze up the rear tire. Broke a gear in the rear differential which took out three other gears. $4500 repair. I now have spacers on the rear tires and I really watch those chains!

Gilbert Bissell • ... Exactly why I bungy strap all my tire chains starting at the lock-links. I've had them come loose on my ATV and tear off the rear Plastic fenders, rear brakes lines which caused $150.+ My labor to repair. At least that tire chain didn't wrap itself around my neck, since I had no enclosure at that time🥺 Scary stuff huh ⁉️

I dropped a tree on mine. Classic. All the best from Vancouver Island.

My mahindra compact came with valve stem protectors on larger tires not micro tires like I see on the green and orange of the compatible size tractors. I've seen larger tires on a riding lawn mower. But.. Good vid thanks for looking out for the new folks and those like me who are new to small tractors.

They put the valve stem protectors on the 4066R now..must be bc this video..Just got our John Deere about 4 weeks ago..very nice

I've bent the stabilizers on the 3 point by grading while backing up with my box blade. I've thought about beefing them up but figure that I'd rather have those be the week link back there. Also like you said about valve stems. I was pushing back a bunch of brush one time and a limb took off the rear wheel valve and all that beet juice or whatever John Deere put in those tires came squirting out. That's happened twice. If it happens again I'm going to have some pipe welded onto the rims to protect the valve stems. Also, I was going through some really tall weeds and the front end climbed up on a great big rock and came down on the steering cylinder bending the shaft and the drag link. Of course the original cylinder was a welded unit that couldn't be taken apart so $800.00 later I got a new one. This one is rebuildable. The drag link I straightened with a hammer. It's a dangerous world out there. ( and an expensive one too).

My uncle put skid plates on his massy 135 and his 165 I think he used 1/2 in steal plat works good

Tip for the first problem. Get some really thick fence used for chicken runs. Not chicken wire a step of and put it over brush guard. Works for me

Oh man wished I'd seen this before today. Yesterday I extended my neighbors driveway 110 feet x 28 feet by excavating about 6 inches of packed sod & clay with my box blade, mainly by pushing / ripping it up backwards. Too big of job for my 2025R? No visible damage I can see, but man I'm worried now because I really could feel the system being stressed. ((note) Not doing that again; turning on Good Works Tractor notifications; buying a seat cover!

Never back uphill out of a pond you're building with a max load of mud in your front bucket putting all the stress on the front drive axle :D

Good points to keep in mind! No doubt maintaining a tractor is probably one of the best things to do. Personally, I’m completely sold on a battery powered grease gun. I was skeptical about the cost but it is absolutely worth it. I have a DeWalt but I’m sure any brand will be fine. You’ll wonder why you didn’t get one sooner!

I wish I could share pics here but they're int eh JD compact tractor group on fbk, but I definitely tore up my rams with them mostly out that way, with the top lid of the grapple as I was pulling vines down from a tree, backing up, as I backed up lowering grapple down, hit a stump I didn't see, and bam. 2 bent rams. $800 and a whole week of work missed. It was my work tractor I use for my business. Also, have taken limbs I to the grill. It is completely tore up. It's all cosmetic though, and my tractor is used commercially so I will certainly let it go until it needs replacing, but I would love to get a brush guard to prevent that from happening again.

Good info on the 3PH use and FEL cylinders. Good operating practices should dictate not to use the bucket edge for scraping either forward or back with the cylinder in full extension. Great overall info particularly for not familiar with tractors.

Jd have to be babied because are purposely built to fail/break ! In other words made to be lawn ornaments! Do not try to use green junk like better built other coloured real machines !

Wow those are some I never would have thought of but I have seen enough bad tree videos to be wary.

When you talk about the bucket curl cylinder becoming damaged, if you look at the distance from the pivot point to the ram when its fully tipped vs a travel position, the ram has almost double the leverage when its in the travel position so any knocks on the bucket put alot less force on the ram. (Technical explanation of what you were explaining).

Overextended the tilt cylinders on my JD 110TLB pushing with my forks. $1600 for cylinders taught me a lesson.

I rolled my tractor once. LS XJ2025H ........I was behind my garage and ran over a rock, was already leaning to one side and the rock made matters worse..and i was a new operator.,.. luckily no damage was really done and i was ok. These little tractors... it doesnt take much to tip em. I since got my rear tires loaded with beet juice. and am working on more ballast up front now the tires are loaded its a little back end heavy especially with the backhoe.

3pt damage can also happen by going down a grade ie ditch and back up the other side with an attachment this lifts the attachment when it hits ground going down. The piston rod for lift arms pops out of piston and can damaged the piston cylinder wall or even knock a chunk out.

Always something to watch out for

Check your wheel lug nuts daily. I was pulling cut tree sections down a hill all morning when I noticed steering felt weird , then noticed only 2 of the 5 on front wheel were still on but barely avoiding a disaster but messing up holes in rim and almost axle flange as well. Now I use a paint stick to mark nut and rim with a stripe so i can tell at a glance nothing moved like JD does on a lot of it bolts after torqueing.

I've seen a few bobcat rims damaged due to loose lug nuts. Understand we torque all our new Bobcats before they go out but you will occasionally get a wheel with wallowed out lugs due to them loosening up.

For that bucket cylinder full extension, I think there should be a hard stop from bucket to loader arm that speed it just short of cylinder full extension.

Had a friend of mine who has a JD 75E and was using a box blade to push backward. He hit a stump and before he could stop, it folded under and the digger teeth on the front went into both rear tires causing both to have to be replaced!

Great video Courtney. Was always thought never to put pressure on or over load a cylinder when it’s at max extension, whether on an excavator or front end loader.

I agree, a little bit of care in how you run your machine when your on it reduces both fuel use and prevents a lot of unnecessary wear and tear. We all probably know folks who are good machine people and can get a job done timely and sweetly without bursting around at full revs and dogging a machine, and then the opposite who are always pushing the machine to the limit and breaking stuff.

You can put a stroke control on your cylinders to limit their range of extension. To do this you have to disassemble the cylinder, and put a stroke limiter between the piston and gland ( calculated for the length of travel you want to restrict). The main problem is that you are losing range of motion on the cylinder which is not good on an excavator or FEL, and it is not an easy or necessarily cheap job to do ( unless you know your way around hydraulic cylinders and have the tools).

the flashers on my 97 NH1530 are spring loaded. They have not been broken tho i have trashed a lens or two!!

Yes the stick into the radiator, done that then put a screen over the front.

It was bad enough I got stuck on the frame in the mud... Then in an effort to get myself out I tried pushing/pulling with the bucket and suddenly I had no hydraulics. I just ripped the hydraulic inlet pipe off the bottom of mine. Good thing I don't have a hydrostatic transmission. I was at least able to jack it up put stuff under the tires to back it out to where the underside is accessible to fix it. I can't go forward because the bucket is in the way.

I recently broke the casting where the top link attaches to the tractor. Had an auger that got stuck down and when I lifted the three point to raise the auger, bang! Not sure if my local machine shop can fix it. John Deere 4210

I know it’s been a while but what happen to the loader off of that 770? I’ve been looking all around for one my my 670 if you have any suggestions.

A lot of 4x4 is meant to be able to be activated as needed at speed. Look in the manual for many tractors. Just like 4-High in a pickup truck can generally be safely engaged up to 50ish mph, similar with many tractors. Of course not to that speed but same theory.

Skid plate would ad some ballast as well? Thanks

There has to be some type of skid plates/under body protection you can get for a tractor, nothing crazy, just like 1/8th inch steel panels to cover stuff. If you have an accessory that would conflict with any of the plates, you take em off during use, but when you take that accessory off, you're already down there, whats 1 minute screwing back on a plate going to hurt anything?

Oh, I don't see much to salvage there. Talk about his day being done..... This video should be required viewing before even starting a newly purchased tractor. There is so much going on once work begins, an operator is going to be hard pressed to observe everything that needs to be watched. It is said that knowledge is power, & the more an operator knows about what could possibly happen, the better his chances are that he will get to end the day by parking it in the barn with little or no damage . I found out the hard way my small Case 24DXe doesn't have a wide enough stance to allow any margin for errors. I was cleaning out the irrigation ditch behind my house and hit a small bump which upset the tractor. I rolled over onto the ditch wall at a 45° but my leg was under the tractor. I didn't have my cell phone and I was too far from the house to get my wife. After about 30 minutes I was able to dig my leg out from under the fender. I was very sore for about a week afterwards. Lesson learned, next time buy a bigger, better tractor.

@@belindakt So true! I was better since the tractor was lying over at an angle. Years before, I was down in the main ditch (6' deep x 20' w) clearing out the turnouts. I hit a bump and completely overturned. So I was very fortunate since a number of people came along and helped me get the tractor back on its wheels. Learning experience for all of us. I've never taken the tractor into the ditch since then.

Hi Ed, G200 is a little bit more geared towards applications with high speed bearings such as mower decks. MoS2 is geared more towards all purpose like loader zerks for instance. Have a great day!

That poor old 770 has seen better days! I have a 970 in mint condition with under 500 hours on it. It would be hard to replace old iron like that with one of these newer tractors! They just dont make them like they used to.

They use to put the valve stem on the inside of the wheel to lesson the likely hood of tearing the valve stem off.

There’s no lug nut mounted stem shroud? Seems like a pretty quick metal project that could save some money and time..

9:16 i think i have the world's only tractor where you are allowed to shift range and 4WD on the fly. i have a 2008 Yanmar SC2400 and there is no neutral position on the range selector- it is described by Yanmar as shift-on-the-fly so that's what i do. in fact i change while moving all the time (4WD/Low to scoop buckets, and 2WD/High to transport across the yard). i'm smart about it and make all my range and 4WD shifts at low ground speed but it never grinds or anything. my guess is it never took off because of liability more than durability- i don't want to find out what happens if you jam it into low at top speed.

Longevity of equipment depends quite a lot on the operator.

Then, of course, there is not tightening the lower arms of the 3-point hitch Zhen using your rotary shredder. Then, when you are trying to back up with the shredder lifted a little too high, the shredder will eat the protective plate on the front of the shredder after it catches on the tire treads.

I broke off one of my lights twice in three months. The second time I had the light guards on. I’m moving them inside the ROPS.

JD uses bolts into plastic... took mine and mounted to the inside and used a Nut/bolt combo.. have not fallen off or become loose ...

Lots of good information there... in a orchard setting, branches not only can knock you off the tractor, they can stab the guts of the tractor and knock every light off, if you are not careful. Thanks for the video!

Actually the force on the cylinder is less when the bucket is fully rolled, look at how the lever works, at 1/2 roll the pivot is perpendicular so the ratio at 1/2 roll is the bucket moves faster like high gear in a car, near full extension its like low gear.

We had a tree fall on our 4440 had it parked in the grove storm nicked it down got a new hood fell right between the air cleaner and the hood very accurate shot

Had my JD 5055E in woods last year cleaning limbs out of trail. I seen a limb get flipped up by front wheel as it rolled off of it and the limb caught the wiring at the 4-wheel drive indicator switch and ripped the wires off before I could get stopped. Repaired myself but was something else to work on that day!!

I bought a John Deere backhoe 310 G. This machine has given me nothing but aggravation the entire time i have had it. Now I find that the software is proprietary and the dealership wants me to bring it in. John Deere can keep their tractors as far as I'm concerned. I'll never buy another one.

John deere doesn't make them they outsource motor, paint, drivetrain attachment implement. It's not Grandpa's john deere.

Are the 3 wires under the tractor on the right sidle supposed to be hanging down like that? If so I bet they get torn up a lot.

If you're referring to those red, black and blue things, those aren't wires. They are just the protective caps for the hydraulic connectors.

Two things not mentioned that I have seen at a dealership is cab windows and heat damaged hydraulic systems. Cab windows. This is really more about odds than anything really. You know how stones from other vehicle's tires can fling up and crack your windshield? The same thing can happen to your tractor while it's on the trailer moving down the highway. Unfortunately, thanks to the angle of your tractor's glass vs your vehicle windshield, what will be a chipping, glancing blow on your vehicle will be a direct, breaking blow to your tractor glass. So if you tow your cab tractor a lot, a bungied tarp over your front facing glass may reduce your chances of broken glass. Overheated hydraulic system. This applies more to utility rather than compact tractors but both types of tractors generally have poor hydraulic cooling and open center hydraulics. Long story short, if you power hydraulic motors over long periods of time, you run the risk of overheating the hydraulic oil which could, depending on the tractor, damage your valves or you pump. Not cheap. You also ruin the oil which means the rest of your hydraulic system has a shorter life. If you do have a hydraulic motor application that runs for a long period of time, I recommend a pto powered power pack which is basically a externally mounted hydraulic system rather than powering it with the tractor hydraulic system.

For the Set Cover on My 1985 JD 1050, I always use the "CUSTOM BUILT" 57 lbs. Dog Food Bag. Get it started, then tilt the set forward and work it the rest of the way on. It Works Like A Champ.... 🤠 👕 👖

There's a Branson tractor on the auction site Purplewave.com that's smashed like this! I thought a tree fell or it was thrown by a tornado!

I had someone else call yesterday afternoon with another insurance claim issue...they hit an ice patch in Minnesota recently and their 3720 cab tractor went splat in the middle of the highway 😪

About a month or so ago, I dropped a tree on one of our tractors at work. I was moving some dirt, and accidentally bumped into a tree. Well that tree was so rotted out from having a pile of leaves, dirt, etc around the base that it just came right down on the tractor. When I first heard it crack I got my ass off that tractor as fast as I could. I’m hindsight, I probably had enough time to get the tractor out of there but why risk personal safety. Thank god my boss was in the area with me with a Kubota excavator and was able to lift the tree off. That was scary. Thankfully the only damage done was to the right rear fender. It cracked it good and also took one of those ROPS lights with it.

Dad dropped a tree on our Farmall A. knocked off the air filter and creased the gas tank a bit and that's all. They built em like tanks, back in the 1940s.

Yah and international made those tractors. John deere outsource everything. Cracks me up yanmar drivetrain you might as well save thousands and just buy yanmar tractor!

Hi, One thing I am surprised at is why everyone always faces the tractor forward on a trailer. By putting it on backwards, this will instantly remove so many possibilities of it getting damaged.

Should also be noted as listed in every manufacturers manual, damage caused by a three point mounted backhoe won’t be covered under warranty, common sense or not, I’d avoid them.

American made tractor? How many? I'm just checking and curious..

Handy way to reseat the bead (on the front tires at least) is to use a ratchet strap around the tread to compress the tire onto the rim to get an airtight seal, and then refill the tire with a standard air compressor to expand the sidewalls out. ....learned this trick from a buddy that used it on car tires, and had to do it myself on a front tractor tire this spring - wish I'd had a good cordless inflator at the time as the most time consuming part of the process was getting an air compressor to the tractor.

Not for the faint hearted, but a good serve of aerosol spray (deodorant for example) into the tyre, then light it up. Pops the tyre out and seats the bead.
