It's not underrated, it's very limited for a strict public. And those who sing opera most of the times can't sing anything else, they can't coach them. They'd have to bring unpopular coaches from metal bands like Tarja Turunen, Floor Jansen, Manuela Kraller or Simone Simons in order to take them out of that genre.

Apparently the judges agree: not a single one of them turned for her. (And for anyone who is thinking that my comment is sexist, it goes the other way around, too. Often you can’t even get in the audition room without a certain school under your belt. It’s a struggle, I’m vocal coaching a lot at the minute and auditioning/recording when I can. I've read the comments and most of them say "It's not commercial" "Who would watch 2/3 hours of Opera?" "Fat" ... And I have noticed that the culture has gone down the drain. Gentlemen, a few years ago, there was a trio of tenors, Lucciano Pavarotti, José Carreras and Plácido Domingo, who filled stadiums, summoned MILLIONS of spectators in the WORLD ... And nobody cared if they were fat, short, bald or what . . . . We were going to hear their beautiful voices. Here the excuse is not that they are not commercial, it is that people prefer to pay for people who sing about how to subdue a woman or ass... And they call that culture.

Honestly you can't miss the shallowness of the arts world today. Nobody can make a career anymore without being beautiful/handsome as if capacities or talents were delivered in a cocoon of beauty everytime. Just look at the judges reaction when they turn expecting something and are served something else, it's a shame. We should recognize talent for what it is instead of caring about looks when it doesn't guarantee any quality. In movies I can understand not wanting to spend hours watching someone you don't find appealing but it doesn't have to come before actual talent. In music it's obvious voice should be the first parameter and it's not. Learning people like Lady Gaga or Freddie Mercury had a hard time making a career because of their nose or their teeth is heartbreaking. It is even more outrageous in literature where writers can be denied because their picture wouldn't look good on backcovers. As the world is now governed by marketing we are now expected to like what society and social pressure tell us we should like based on beauty standards and norms. It's a shame to see culture, as you said, be reduced because the people who decide try to make money instead of creating art.

@@JuliaK-ve2rw Yup, it's from the Fifth Element. If I'm not mistaken the original singer had to sing the song in parts during the filming. It's an extremely difficult song to sing exactly like the film version as the singer has to basically jump through every note on the scale in very quick succession. The rendition that came the closest was from a Chinese opera singer and even then it was extremely taxing for her. I think she had to train for months in order to get the song perfect.

If you listen carefully you can hear a lot of electronically produced notes between 4:00 and 4:20. I don't know whether this is because she can't sing the notes or because she is trying to reproduce closer to the original. Personally I think the latter is the case as I feel the whole production of this song was staged that way.

@@billie-jobenway8658 I don't know about closer - who is to say one interpretation is better than another. I think the quality of the voice is the thing whilst trying to reproduce this very difficult song. Inva Mula, the singer on the original film soundtrack is such a brilliant opera singer in her own right, it is difficult to make comparisons. However, here are a couple of singers who (allegedly) sang this song without electronically enhanced notes. I think that's the point. The first is an Armenian girl, oddly enough performing in Russia's (?) The Voice. Some of her lower notes are a little insecure in the operatic section but the rock section is excellent and not an electronic note in sight that I could discern. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqF9x8ujn5rZaJM.html. The second one is Jane Zang one of China's best sopranos. You will see that before the rock section she takes her ear piece out to show that she is not synced into any electronic notes. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nX6glNeJftawdc4.html. I hope the links work.
