Final Lap Twin. Great game. Great music. The graphics definitely could use tweaking as the TG is capable of so much more. Probably could've been really close or just as good, maybe better than the arcade game. I'd need to compare the two side by side based off what we now know the Turbo is capable of. It'd be nice if someone did a hack of that game. Or, if their ends up being a TG Mini 2, have M2 do a near arcade version that you can unlock, like they did with several games on the first Mini. Also, World Court Tennis had an RPG made as well, but I don't feel it's quite as good. I think music during the battles would've helped, but in general I'm not great at Tennus games. Final Lap Twin, on the other hand, I was able to beat.

It's amazing how much of a little powerhouse this system was. The RAM expansion in the CD add-on REALLY opened up the potential of the graphics chip inside this thing. With the RAM expansion it is definitely the most graphically impressive system of the main three 16-Bit systems of the time. The graphical difference between the HuCard games & the Super CD games is pretty big. Some of them look like 32-Bit titles!

As a kid, I had the TG16 when it hit America. As an adult I currently game on a Super Grafx with a super sd system 3. I have a duo, a turbo express with an everdrive, 3 pc engine interface briefcases... yes 3 of them. I know I am an NEC fanatic. Not to be confused with a "fanboy" I can honestly say, with all due respect, you are smoking crack if you really believe it was "the most graphically impressive system of the main three 16-Bit systems of the time" graphical superiority goes to the snes if you are talking main consoles alone. If you throw the cd rom into the mix, superiority goes to sega you don't need a spec sheet to see this is obvious If you did read the hardware specs you would know there is no comparison P.S. the NEO GEO hardware was also 16bit I bet you think it's 24bit

Over the years, working with programmers, I've come to accept that all three of the main so-called 16-bit systems, are equal. They have their strengths and they have their weaknesses. If you put the mega CD into the batch, that system is capable of a lot more than any of the main three. However, rarely did anyone, if ever, truly use the power that was available on the mega CD. The mega CD could be likened to the extra chips put in some SNES games. It pushed the system literally beyond its limits. The Turbo had no such advantage, which is why I don't bother comparing the TG to the Sega CD, or any enhanced SNES game, unless there's a clear indication of someone clearly not taking advantage of said extra chips or Sega CD. The TGCD literally only added 1 ADPCM channel and and a cheaper way of having more memory. A good example of how a TG game can look over a Genesis game is the demo of Bonk's Adventure on the genesis. Amazingly, it just doesn't look as good. The lack of colors I think seems to be the main thing that holds back the Genesis version. And of course the NES version doesn't compare to the turbo version, and that's considering that I don't consider the original Bonk's Adventure to be any kind of graphical monster. It's fairly basic for the most part in my opinion. Also, it takes me off at it at least in the early days there was a tendency to treat the PC engine like a souped-up famicom. Games that took more advantage of the basic power of the TG are Private Eye Dol, Sapphire, the Legend of Xanadu series, Street Fighter 2(and that's not considering the hack that makes the graphics look even better), the Neo Geo games, Tokimeki Memorial(compared to the SNES version, I don't think that version used extra chips though), Beyond Shadowgate, the Thunder series, Spriggan 1, Anearth Fantasy Stories, Gulliver Boy, Monster Maker, Sol Moonarge, Kabuki Ittuyordan, Snatcher(which should've looked better on Sega CD, although, there might still be a 64 color limit for the Sega CD). Actually, our unreleased Jungle Bros. game ain't half bad looking either.

I feel like Sapphire, Private Eye Dol, Legend of Xanadu 1 & 2, Anearth Fantasy Stories, Sol Moonarge, Monster Maker, Gulliver Boy, Fang of Arnam, Spriggan, both Cho Aniki's, Tokimeki Memorial, Kaze Kiri, Magical Chase, Air Zonk, Coryoon, both Thunder games, Snatcher, Kabuki Ittuyordan, and Street Fighter 2 all give great range for what the Turbo is actually capable of. Actually, there's even a hack for Street Fighter 2 that makes it look even better. Plus, there were 2 more finished Neo Geo games, World Heroes 1 and King of the Monsters 2 that remain unreleased. I used to talk to one of the 2 Leroy brothers at Working Designs, and he said they were fantastic looking and completely finished. According to him, World Heroes 1 didn't come out, because TTI started planning on a US release of the Arcade Card, as well as World Heroes 2, so they figured they wouldn't make enough money back to Warrant the production costs. On the other hand, King of the Monsters 2 was going to require the Arcade card. The way he put it to me was that, every several steps you take on the screen, would cause it to reload If released as a Super CD game, so they decided to make it an Arcade CD game because of the tremendous amount of detail and data involved. So in a twist of irony, that game didn't get released because the arcade card didn't get released! And from what I hear about Vic Ireland and his iron fist, it doesn't sound like any Working Designs games wiyh voice acting are ever going to get released or re-released ever. That's why there are no re-releases recently of any of their CD games. Whether it be Cosmic Fantasy 2, Exile, or Lunar. Although on the flip side, I don't know if any voices were used from wd's voice acting team for World Heroes or King of the Monsters 2, so maybe there's some slight chance that they'll actually get a release someday. From what I hear from industry insiders, it sounds like the Leroy brothers would have no problem giving the go ahead on releasing any of their games, but it's Vic Ireland that has a Stranglehold on the properties they released in the past.

Graphically true to the original, and playing every bit as well as its arcade parent, Strider was a convincing argument for PC Engine owners to shell out for the CD add-on if they had not already done so. The Sega Genesis port apparently featured slightly higher resolution, but the PC Engine version was still rock-solid and had CD-based music to round out the package.

Some extra little bonuses for the PC Engine: Every level has a cutscene with different art and voices than the arcade version, plus boss characters give short speeches, complete with portraits, before you fight them. However, the most significant addition is an entirely new level exclusive to the PC Engine.

I can't understand why NEC didn't combine the SuperGrafx with the CD-ROM and try something better to compete with the Mega Drive / Super Nintendo outside of Japan as both had already been released (at least the CD-ROM) at the time of the TurboGrafx release. TurboGrafx should be based on SuperGrafx.

  • @ParanoiaDragon

    @ParanoiaDragon

    Жыл бұрын

Yeah there's different theories of what happened to Strider in all those years. It is possible that it started as a SuperGrafx game but then got transferred to an Acade CD game. It definitely could have been done better, especially as an Arcade CD game or a SuperGrafx game. Whether it be the added BG Lair and colors of the SuperGrafx, or it be the tremendous amount of memory involved in the arcade card. It is slightly janky in the controls in my opinion, but I still love it. The music itself is fantastic even though it's missing a couple of tunes sadly. And I do think that some of the Parallax could have been pulled off if planned correctly. It's just a matter of programming and knowing when to use Sprites or dynamic tiles to fake parallax. At the very least, there's a lot of horizontal Parallax that could have been done, vertical Parallax on the other hand is more difficult. So at the very least some of the horizontal axis could have been done. I don't know if it would have looked maybe a little bit weird that way, but it's better than nothing. I think, when making the PC Engune Duo, they should have Incorporated the SuperGrafx architecture in there. I would have been nice, although I'm sure it would have been more expensive to do that. And that would have left regular PC Engine owners behind. Perhaps if there was a way back then to add the SGX architecture into the Arcade Card. That would be much easier and cheaper to do nowadays of course, I have no idea how it would have worked out back then though. From what I've heard, Hudson felt that they originally needed the SGX to compete with the upcoming SFC, but apparently still were doing well enough after the SFC was released. The PCE was apparently number one for several years up until the release of the SFC, then dropped to a fairly strong #2. I have to wonder if they could have competed better if the SGX was included in their Duo plans. And possibly could have extended the life of the already aging PC Engine. The PC engine itself came out 4 years before the SFC, though it's still competed extremely well, partly due to its strengths over its own weaknesses. I believe it was by 1991 that NEC, instead of trying to push the SGX, started working on the Iroman, which became the PC-FX. Which that became a total flop though, Hudson barely supported it and honestly hardly anyone supported it. And it was riddled mostly with digital comics and FMV games. I've never compared its specs to the 3DO or the Jaguar, let alone the PS1 or Saturn. I assume the PC-FX was weaker than the Jag and 3DO. Though I think it might have had much better chip for processing video, if I'm remembering right.

@@skins4thewin I guess I wouldn't be 100% surprised. There was missing animation in the CD Bonk 3. I don't know if it was a lack of memory somehow due to it being super CD or if there was some other issue. If someone would have the time and take the time to look into the code, they could probably figure out what went wrong and figure out a way to enhance it. Bonk 3 definitely didn't take advantage of the Turbo for cartridge or CD. It should have been a technical jump above the second game, but it really isn't. The only thing that is kind of neat about it is being able to have two giant Bonks walking around on screen with no flicker or slow down. It was however done by a completely different Dev team than the first two games, although the name of that team escapes me. And it's that same team that did Super Bonk which explains why that game, at least in my opinion, is kind of dull. It didn't push the SNES at all. If I'm remembering right however, Super Bonk 2 was also done by that same team and I feel like they did a much better job in general though I never did like the fact that you had to respawn at checkpoints in it when you die. I have plans for all of the non-Turbo Bonk games to be ported and enhanced, but I haven't worked on the planning or the music in several years and there hasn't been any coders that have stepped up to the challenge. One coder I've talked to has basically expressed some interest but he just doesn't have the time to work on full games anymore. I had one Sprite and tile artist reworking the graphics and they looked pretty nice, though I think it was only for the very first level. I don't think I remember anything graphically beyond that. One of the things we focused on was improving the colors. There was no saturation in Super Bonk. There might have been technically more colors, but the choices were too dark for a Bonk game. Actually, some of my music for Super Bonk which I was calling Bonk to the Future is on SoundCloud under the name Paranoia Dragon if you want to have a listen. I made it sound more like true Bonk music, from the first two games, although, in enhanced because it was going to be Redbook audio for the game. Back to the missing animation now, I guess I just didn't play the CD versions enough to notice, since I had already played through the first two games a million times on the carts before the Gate of Thunder CD came out.

While Strider looks like it could've been a Super CD game, sadly, it was an Arcade CD game, which should've, in theory gave it more of an edge, due to the tremendous amount of megabits it could process. Although my understanding is the extra 16 megabits of the arcade card work differently than the 2 megabits of the super CD. I think it's something like, the two megabits can load a basic level, but the 16 megabits can add extra detail within a level somehow. It's something like that. Like I say it's a shame, because this game certainly could have been a lot better being that it was an arcade CD game. For all I know it could have been better even if it was only a super CD game. I get the feeling it was a super CD game before being transferred to the arcade CD but they didn't really try to take advantage of it.

@@ParanoiaDragon I didn't know that but wouldn't it still be limited by how much RAM and GPU the PC Engine was capable of putting out? Does the Arcade Card or Super Card add anything substantial to the mix? Was it comparable to the Sega CD? That thing in 1992 was a powerhouse of wasted potential.

@@Sinn0100 Nope, the system cards, 1.0(I'm assuming there was a 1.0, in the US, we started with I believe 2.1), 2.0, 3.0 or what essentially is 4.0(Arcade) didn't really add anything extra. The only advantage that CD games got besides the obvious of Redbook audio, was one ADPCM channel for sampled sound effects and speech, and a much cheaper way of making a large game on a disc instead of having to rely on a multitude of chips which gets very expensive. Obviously it would have been nice if the arcade card perhaps included some sort of chips that could strengthen the TG to have the enhancements of the SuperGrafx, but I have no idea how much cost that would have involved. If it were done now, I know it would be a lot cheaper. But back then, I'm sure it was quite expensive. Yeah the Sega CD was very very very underused. While i don't know as much about the Sega CD, I do enjoy games on it and I recognize that the Sega CD just never did what it was actually capable of. Perhaps there's one or two games that pushed the Sega CD, but maybe the only way to tell, would be if, let's say Lunar was on the TGCD, it could be compared to the Sega CD version. And if the Sega CD version was significantly better, then obviously they were to some degree pushing the system rather than doing just basic programming. There were a few games that were cross-platform, but I don't feel like any of them really showed a significant difference and I want to say a few of them actually looked better on the TGCD despite the fact that the Sega CD is capable of so much more. I believe Burai on the Sega CD looked slightly better than the Turbo version, but nowhere near the gap I would imagine with the specs that the Sega CD has. The TG, at least in the early days was in the same situation. Alot of devs tended to not push the system, they treated it more like a souped-up Famicom unfortunately. My guess is the tendency for the Sega CD to be treated like a souped-up Genesis, but we all know it was significantly more powerful than that. I would definitely say it was significantly more powerful than the base Genesis, the SNES, and the TG. I could be wrong, but I believe the Sega CD was actually capable of enhancing cartridge games on a Genesis, although I don't know if that ability was ever actually used. I'd have to look it up to see if that's true though. Also, I don't really know how to compare the Sega CD to any enhancement chips on the SNES. I mainly know about the Turbo because of being part of The Homebrew scene and talking to coders about what can and can't be done on the Turbo. If only more home Brewers would get involved, more games for the Turbo would be made including arcade ports that I would personally like to see. And I've found out that parallax, while not native to the TG, is easier than people make it out to be. It really has more to do with planning a game around faking the parallax, but even then, there are a lot of tricks that can be done. There's one coder in particular that I've worked with that has been able to do some incredible things. However, he only really works on demos and anything to do with helping The Homebrew scene in a very general sense rather than actually making new games. Since like a lot of us, he just doesn't have the time to work on a full game. That's the main thing that broke up my Dev group, Frozen Utopia, real life got in the way and we ended up with several games that we never finished as we were continuing to learn how to push the Turbo. I do have several of my own projects I've been planning, but right now there's just no coders that want to take them on. So I'm stuck with having soundtracks to games that may never be made. The best example is Jungle Brothers which you can look up on KZread, especially the 5th and 6th MGC demo of it. We were starting to learn more about how much we could do with the Turbo, but we still had a ways to go at the time. We stopped working on that back in 2016, and since then many more tricks to push the system have been found but not used by the scene, at least not yet. And unfortunately, the one game we did release, Mysterious Song, didn't push the system. Part of it having to do with us relying to some degree on using Hu C, instead of assembly. Actually, that almost makes me wonder if it's possible that most coders on the Sega CD were trying to take the easy route by using C instead of assembly?? My understanding is, assembly is a million times more efficient when you can generally just do a lot more with it, but I believe it's more time consuming and also complicated compared to just C. So yeah, I do speculate a little bit that maybe that's one of the reasons why Sega CD didn't get pushed. I don't know if the fact that the Mega Drive wasn't very popular in Japan had any bearing on it but I suppose that's also possible. Maybe if they concentrated on the fact that it was at least maybe a little more popular in the West they would have put more effort into it? Even then I don't know how well the Sega CD did in North America or Europe or Brazil. While I get the feeling it didn't do very well, partially based on the fact that I didn't know anybody that had one, I'm sure it did better in the west than it did in the east based on everything I've seen.

Strider is quiet awful, Bonk 3 on the CD does not add anything more than the cd music compare to the Hu-Card, which is pointless and Prince of Persia is an ok port but this machine offers much better. There is so much better than these game: Spriggan, Spriggan II, Sylpha, Star Parodia, Ys IV, Legend of Xanadu, Tengaimakyou II Manjimaru, Emerald Dragon, Magicoal, Gradius II, Nexzr, Forgotten World, Rayxamber III, Burai 2, Fajias, Gulliver Boy... Even Download II, Mystic Formula, Pop'n Magic, Macross 2036, L-Dis and CD-Denjin are better game than some of your selection. Agreed with some of your choice thought (Wing of thunders, Snatcher, Dracula X, Ys I and II).

I want to love the PC Engine CD but Dungeon Explorer is pretty weak. Take.away those synth tunes and the game isn't as interesting as Dragon Crystal on the Game Gear. Prince of Persia? That DOS game with the horrible controls? Weak. A port of Bonk's adventure with barely improved audio? It's a great game but it already exists without a $400 add on. Snatcher is way better on the Sega CD. Fatal Fury was always just okay with its boring character designs and generic presentation. How do you play it with two buttons btw? Does it require a special controller? Strider just sucks on the Turbo CD. It may be closer to the arcade but the Genesis port looks better, sounds better, and most importantly plays better. R-Type suffers from the same problem as Bonk....there is already a sufficiently great version on the regular system without the need for a $400 add on. Ys never did it for me....that horrible game play mechanic of literally just bumping into things over and over for hours (because it requires so much grinding). And the soundtrack isn't even THAT great when compared to Final Fantasy or Phantasy Star. Lords of Thunder is overrated....take away the silly poorly aged head banger music and its just another generic shooter with style over substance gameplay......and then it has Castlevania X. One of the best games of all time. Beyond the one game there is no reason for this thing. It might be worse than the 32X and its definitely far worse than the Sega CD.

Jon Sorenson Lol, go watch a few Pc Engine vids from 8Bit1000 to get a broader view of the Pc Engine. Pc Engine is one of those systems like the Genesis where you have to delve a few lairs deep into it's library before encountering a multitude of gems. These here are those surface titles everybody knows about, like Altered Beast, Sonic and Golden Axe. That being said the 2 I'd pull out of here is Gates of Thunder, Castlavenia and also R-Type Complete is no joke either....pretty spot on port. As far as Fatal Fury that's purely a personal opinion, everyone knows that Aes is the way to go when it comes to Neo Geo and once you step into Fatal Fury Special onward the series has some top gems one of which still remains one of the top 2D fighters of sll time, Garou Mark of the Wolves. Pc Engine itself is loaded with collector material on Cd.

I recant my statement to a degree! I've looked deeper and it's not as bad as I thought but I stand by my contention that the add on itself, when taken as a $400 Turbo grafx add on, was just terrible and that the sega CD (also terrible) wasn't quite as bad. This is especially true when considering the fact that the vast majority of PC Engine CD games are Japanese and weren't released or translated outside of there. I really like the Gate of Thunder game, which I shouldn't have omitted, and I really really like Travel Epuru which no one ever talks about (it's not great but I love it). But when it comes to collecting, aren't there entirely different considerations from whether or not the system or game library are any good? Collectors want a complete library. If the complete library includes shitty or mediocre games then who cares?

  • @metalgear7777

Jon Sorenson I agree the U.S Cd attachement at the time definitely could've used the aid of it's Jp much more complete counterpart especially when considering the $400 I overlooked. As far as collectability goes (like with most best libraries out there like Sega Saturn's, Snes, Sharp68000 and even others despite the fair amount of lackluster titles like Nes and SMS...SMS being *highly* underrated with many top end more complete ports) the gems far outweigh the crap titles in sheer collectable value, given the late ever rising prices most collectors opt to cherry pick their way through some of these libraries like with PCE because there's tons and tons of gems so no real reason to get into the least impressive titles unless going for particular sets, others libraries require you to get into those crap titles if you want a sizeable collection but that's far from the case with Pc Engine collecting, the problem with PCE is that it's mostly hardcore collectors know about those titles and they keep it hush when it comes to the mainstream audience because as a collector of higher expense libraries the main obejective is to beat the mainstream to the punch $$$$ so racing the clock to the finish line is usually the focus over popularizing the more hidden gems. You defintitely have a point with that 400$ attachement, pretty crazy tag considering the size and limit of available U.S Duo titles at the time, the region free aspect of the CdRom titles is a big plus for todays Pc Engine collectors.
