    Always great to see TG-16 coverage. Nice work. The TurboGrafx-CD with Ys Book I & II is the most expensive video game purchase I have ever made, and it was worth every penny. I was not even a year out of high school, so I would say it took two paychecks to cover. Anybody experiencing Ys in early 1990 knows how mind-blowing the experience was. I would disconnect the CD and hook it to PC speakers and listen to the Ys soundtrack on repeat when I slept some nights.

    Ys 1&2 was probably the greatest soundtrack of all time. Also, probably the greatest video game intro of all time. I remember seeing that game the first time when I was a kid. I was only 12

    History of the console was interesting, I didn't get the CD add on until 1991 when it dropped to $150. I mail ordered the Super CD system card the following year that was officially released in the US, but sadly the Arcade Card never was as I think the Turbografx-16 was pretty much dead by 1994. Kind of wish this video covered some of the CD games more like Ys 1-3, Cosmic Fantasy 2, etc.

    Once again fantastic video informations always on point and I'm glad you emphasize how important it was with tg16 PC engine CD add-on was so revolutionary at the time too bad not too many people at least here in the US experienced it I got mine tg16 in 1990 picked up the CD add-on in 91 definitely have the painful memory of picking up the CD add-on and a copy of fighting Street and Ys book 1 and 2 well over five hundred bucks but I was only one that had it and loved it definitely used to take it out all the time get and all my boys used to go absolutely Bonkers over wish I had that sweet carrying case that you have though don't have my original system anymore but I do have PC engine core grafx with the CD-ROM to attachment and I also have my turbo Duo and I have the arcade Duo card for the PC engine so I can play the entire Library no problem it just sucks the games are so expensive for the system feel sorry for anybody starting to collect one now but anyway fantastic video looking forward to the next one

    Thanks Jeff! Yeah, the carrying case is awesome to store it and port it around. It was a surprise to me when it showed up with mine, the seller didn't list that it came with it (or the TG16!). Really wish I would've had one back in the day, it would've made my friends jealous. Yes! It has been quite expensive to collect for. Thankfully the US government is helping to fund this one 😂

    While I find it a tad bit odd that CD technology for game consoles really didn't take off until 1995/1996 in North America with the Playstation 1 when I think about it more it makes since. Putting the obvious huge hurdle of price aside it just seems to me that the TG CD and Sega CD didn't *really* take full advantage of what the technology of capable of since they were still primarily focused on their core consoles. The CD based games just seemed like enhanced versions of the chip games with improved audio, cut scenes and FMV thrown in. The Philips CDI was sort of marketing itself more as a home multimedia system first than a games console and was REALLY expensive when it launched so it was never going to take off. The 3DO did have a legit shot but it came in too expensive to justify upgrading from the Genesis or SNES in late 1993 and didn't really have all that great of a launch games lineup. You could've gotten a Sega Genesis/CD system for less than half the price of the 3DO at that time and even then people were sort of mixed on the Sega CD so many were holding off. By the time many of the good games for the 3DO were rolling out in 1994 people knew that the next gen of CD based consoles (PS1, Saturn) were right around the corner.

    it's funny that no one addresses the obvious reason why a lot of 8 and 16 bit systems had an uphill battle back then. it was nintendo's exclusive deals that kept A LOT of games from the tg -16 and even to an extent, the genesis . nintendo was very well afraid of competition.

  • @PlayerOneStart

    @PlayerOneStart

    Yeah, that was a big deal through the first part of this system's life. If you're interested, you should check out my 8 Bit War video series, I mention Nintendo's monopolistic gaming practices during that, and will certainly address it in the 16 Bit War as well. :) Thanks for watching!

    Wait, it has CD sound making it super charged?! I have to stop gaming on these old Blu Ray drives on the Series X and PS5...I'm upgrading to CD! I'm joking but it is a flimsy reason to talk about sound in gaming with you for a second. Why does Red Book audio sound so much better than anything we have today. The notion should seem preposterous but I really think Playstation games from 1995 sound better than the newest games coming out today. The only thing I can think of is compression perhaps. Addendum- I remember the Turbo CD ROM ROM came with either Fighting Street or Y's Books I&II. As for as the Turbo CD ROM ROM's look...I do believe after the redesign of the PC Engine forced their hands especially given how it was released alongside the TG-16...which is nuts. Why didn't they sell an all-in-one package in 1989. The TG-16 w/CD ROM ROM bundled together.

    It did't succeed because of the games. S/NES, Sega, had so many games based on hit movies (Jurassic Park, Aladdin), hit cartoons (Chip and Dale, Ducktails), and a plethora of Sports Games. The few games based on American films/cartoons for TG were poor games. The sports games came too late in the system's lifecycle. In retrospect it was a better system than the Sega Master or NES, but the games, the games, the games. They should have released some strong film/cartoon and Basketball/Football games in the first 12 months of release. Aaaaaannnnnddddd.... the console remained expensive throughout its lifecycle (Turbo Duo anyone?).

    The Turbo/PCE had CD, CD Rom2 and SuperCD, thus the 3 different system cards. The first CD games were just called CD, not CDRom2 which was the second version followed by SCD.

    This is something that is very confusing about CD-ROM2. There was no CD-ROM1. The three versions are CD-ROM2, Super CD-ROM2, and Arcade CD-ROM2. There was no just “CD” that I am aware of for PC Engine. The launch titles for the TurboGrafx say CD-ROM 2 on them. Necretro’s website does a good job explaining this if you’re interested in this further. I also used some information from their site for this video. Also there will be a part 2 next week.

    The Turbografx CD-Rom did have a pack in game included. The system came bundled with Fighting Street. In fact I would've actually been fine if the game wasn't included since it was one that I would not have purchased separately. Very bad game.
