One of the tragedies abut the whole Jimmy Saville scandal was that John Lydon tried to draw attention to Saville's behaviour way back in 1979 and nobody did anything about it, such was culture back then. Absolutely shocking. Regarding the whole miming thing, it wasn't exactly all that surprising bands were doing it as many music format shows worldwide also did the same thing. Some bands didn't mind miming as that was how the 7 inch single version they were trying to get the public to buy sounded. Some bands however felt insulted by it (watch the movie Bohemian Rhapsody for example). I remember seeing a very drunk Rick Parfitt falling into the drum kit when Status Quo were on TOTP showing it was obviously mimed. Having said that I also remember Nigel Planer (aka Neil from The Young Ones) quite obviously performing 'Hole in my Shoe' live on TOTP in 1984. Finally, regarding Frankie goes t Hollywood. The BBC were the best thing that happened to their career after the publicity they got when 'Relax' was temporarily banned after one of the DJ's called it "filth". It wasn't the first time a song got massive sales after a BBC ban (Sex Pistols 'God Save the Queen' in 1977 and 'Je Taime' by Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin in 1969, so getting banned from TOTP is a gamble that can pay off in some cases..

Frankie and Culture Club weren't the only openly LGBT artists back then, Bronski Beat, The Communards, Tom Robinson, Marilyn, Pete Burns, Freddie Mercury and let's not forget David Bowie, probably the biggest gender bending, openly bisexual artist ever, ok his more androgynous stuff was 70's but he was still having massive hits in the 80s and was an inspiration for many of the other LGBT artists.

Not sure it was on TOTP, but there's a video of Fairport Convention performing their song Angel Delight and I remarked on how Simon Nicol could have been doing the rhythm and lead parts at the same time (overdubbed on the record, presumably, as this was after Richard Thompson had left). Someone replied that the answer lay on drummer Dave Mattacks's T-shirt, which had the word "miming" on it.

Madness got banned, from time to time, by the producers from performing on stage, because they refused to mine properly, sending the whole thing up, so often their videos were shown instead. But they weren't the only band to make fun of miming. The BBC has a whole history of people like Saville, there was also Rolf Harris, Gary Glitter and others including a sculpture who designed statues for one of their buildings, being ignored and allowed to prey on others.

As a fan of 60s rock and pop I was trying the other day to watch 60s TOTP episodes here in youtube and it is terrible that Saville is always the presenter. At least I am glad they don´t have him for the 80s shows since I have been also enjoying 80s TOTP performances and episodes from the decade of my childhood. From other controversies in this video it seems things were very questionable in general back in the 60s and 70s in TOTP and perhaps they were able to handle things better in the 80s

New Order couldn't have really been that much of a problem for the BBC seeing that they were invited to play at the Corporation's Maida Vale studios - a place where only a selected few really get to go. In 2015, Sumner and co plus La Roux but minus an estranged Peter Hook by that time performed some new material including the song Tutti Frutti. Sumner and Hook had always had different opinions about what direction and style of music the band should pursue. Sumner wanted the more electronic, synthesizer style whereas Hook was much more old style and traditional guitar orientated. But after many years Hook quit New Order.

Wait! How were the pumpkins banned??? Tonight was years after disarm so basically that’s a bullshit statement.

When there is no live voice what's the point ? sync or mime it's all a bit fake ? Wild thing would be people actually singing with a band on stage maybe ....

British here. I’ve mainly heard it called it lip syncing. Miming does sound familiar to me for some reason. In any case lip synching is ridiculous.

Frankie goes to Hollywood were never on Top Of the Pops while it was in the charts as it was banned by the BBC. If it was banned how could be on Top of the Pops. The clip you show is from a Top Of the Pops 20th anniversary edition later on in the year when Relax had been out the charts for weeks, So this performance didn't make them mega stars. they already were by this time. You need to more research as usual

The Ghost in the machine album that song came from is generally quite a dark album anyway. 'Every little thing she does is magic" is one of the more upbeat tracks on it. It's also the first album I ever bought and brings back some great memories of starting secondary school. My god the 1980s were a depressing time 🤣
