Cobain almost eating the microphone is one of my favorite Nirvana moments.

Many artists did it on purpose, as a protest or just pissing about. For example, Ian Anderson during Jethro Tull's 'Witch's Promise'. I think The Stranglers once mimed without strings and Oasis' Gallagher brothers swapped places in mid-song! In 1996, The Eels performed 'Novocaine for the Soul' with toy instruments (before smashing them up at the end)! Then, in 1988, there was All About Eve, who just sat there for what seemed like an age (and looked like a protest), but actually they couldn't hear the soundtrack to mime to. They played live the following week and sounded great, proving that the whole miming thing was an unnecessary nonsense.

What did Anderson do during Witch's Promise? He always acts frenetic and fun, even today, so it's hard to tell much difference.

Some artists did this sort of thing to protest not being able to perform live. I seem to recall one band saying they wore boxing gloves to emphasise that they weren't really playing.

Terry Hall often took the piss and would start grinning when called upon to mime.

Soul II soul had the right idea walking out when they were told they had to mime and they never went back to perform Back II life

Kurt Cobain made a fantastic Morrissey impression in that performance. It's hilarious.

I love that Eels performance. Mark may have seemed "unenthusiastic" but that's kind of his normal delivery. I think the whole toy playing fit the style of song perfectly. They wanted to put on a performance..and they did.

Not surprised most of the American bands (and Oasis lol) made a mockery of it. Only saying as one who grew up in that whole mix, they were asking musicians who were real musicians to mime. Of course, they are not going to play along & rebel against it. Very sure they saw it as a sell-out moment & industry insult to not perform live.

I remember when REM’s lead singer sung in to a load speaker in protest of being told to lip sync.

Im sure that everyone in the audience was deeply touched by gary,s performance

Really? Pretty sure Nirvana and Oasis had their own way of giving the big ol middle finger due to the show's commitment to miming altogether, which they obviously didn't appreciate. Those performances are all the better for it.

Gee.....and to think Milli Vanilli got in trouble for lip syncing. If they had their gig on TOTP, the controversy might never have come to life. I liked their songs....and I didn't even care that they didn't actually sing them!

Cobain doing Morrissey is one of the funniest things I've ever seen - period!

Flying Saucer by The Wedding Present is one I remember. The guitarist even subtly flips the bird at the camera during close ups

This lyp syncing rule is New Order's fault for messing up when they insisted on playing live.

Never heard of Eels but they are absolute legends for that.

I honestly don't know why TOTP didn't just lean into people goofying around on stage, it was far more fun. I feel sorry for All About Eve, at the time they got criticized when really them missing the queue (and being made to mime at all) wasn't their fault. The funny thing was that was the first time I'd heard Nirvana, not realzing Kurt was dorking around my first thought was "Why would anyone listen to this shit?"

They were always on a hiding to nowhere with Patton!

I loved nirvanas vocals, it sounds loungy and humourous at the same time

Iggy Pop -performing- actually being a real wild child, but Michael Hurll's priority would've been to make sure there weren't any teddy bears available for Iggy to bugger 😂

Iron Maiden refused to appear on top of the pops as they couldn't perform live

This show went through phases of allowing live singing, not allowing it, or letting the band choose.

Well it doesn't exist any more (ended in 2006), but the policy changed over the years, and a few bands stamped their feet enough to be allowed to perform live. There was a period in I think the mid 90s when they actually insisted on live vocals at the very least, although obviously a lot of bands didn't perform, but they'd show music videos.
