Top 10 Times Hilarious Comedians Got Super Serious
It can be easy for comedians and comedic actors to be type-cast only in comedy-related roles. However, some have made the leap from comedy to drama... and some have done it extremely well. In this video we countdown what we think are the very best dramatic performances by traditionally comedic actors.

I think Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman is one of the best examples of this.

Steve Carrell on Miss Sunshine was something that has impact since the first scene he is on. Robin Williams was also very powerful on other films like Awakenings, The Fisher King and Dead Poets Society. And my favorite has to be Jim Carrey. I knew that comedians doing drama had something special but he had the thing that showed they are the best to do this.

Why is it they make for such good dramatic actors? Because they tend to understand pain and dealing with pain well-“I laugh to keep from crying; I tell jokes to keep from screaming into the void” was a quote I remember from one of Robin Williams’ earlier interviews

The entire basis of comedy, specifically standup, is to be observational so you can point out/play off the flaws of society. It’s why so many comedians are depressed: it’s their job to observe the world and the world kinda sucks. That’s why comedians make strong dramatic actors: They’re trained to observe, feel, and play with life’s goings on. Drama is just switching that last step from comedic absurdism to dramatic realism.

One of my favourites is Peter Sellers' performance in Being There. Sandler's, Williams' and Carrey's are also among the most moving performances I've seen from comedians.

Really love this list! I think you nailed all of the great dramatic performances by comedians! You also make a really great theory as to why comedians get cast in these roles! Awesome video!

Your sequels better than the original, and comedians who turned dramatic, are why I subscribed. Good job, keep it up.

The Big Short? I think that Steve Carell's role as John Dupont in Foxcatcher is more serious than that.

I'm a bit late to the party here, and I'm glad to see Albert Brooks included on this list, but I do think it's worth noting that his first mainstream movie role was Taxi Driver--Brooks is a comedian to be sure, but has always had a toe in more serious films.

Extremely disappointed in youse for not mentioning Williams' performances in Insomnia, 1 Hour Photo, and HOLY SHIT What Dreams May Come! Sorely tempted to downvote for that omission! Only thing saving you the horrid disgrace of a single meaningless imaginary internet point loss is that Good Will Hunting is my absolute favorite movie of all time :P

I find it funny people point out that Adam Sandler acts like a man child in his comedy movies, but people don't even bring up that Will Ferrell literally does the same schtick.

I agree with Pedro Silva: You got the right Nr. 1 (Robin Williams) but the wrong film. I found him way more touching in Awakenings and Dead poets society. But nevertheless: thanks for the great video ;-)!

The implication that all comedic actors make strong dramatic performers is completely and utterly wrong. It's just plain rubbish. Just because there are a few who managed to do it, that does not mean they all can and in reality, for every one who has made it there are 20 who failed. The whole premise is wrong. Some performers are so good that they can perform comedy or drama, THAT is what is going on. That's why there are dramatic actors who then turn out to be great at comedy too; like Leslie Nielson or Alec Baldwin, off the top of my head, who both started as dramatic actors. There's no magic in being a comedian that makes them great dramatic actors. Sorry, this is a FAIL...
