The thing with donaghy is that he’a not the only ref that does this, he literally happened to get caught because the fbi was investigating the mob in a completely different matter. The fact that at the time he was also considered in the top 10% of officials as far as getting calls right is concerned means that 90% of the other ones do it even more blatantly or they are worse officials than a guy who’s actually fixing games. Crazy to think about.

The same thing seems to happen in all major American sports. Whenever you start getting close to the end of the quarter/inning/period, there are always questionable calls going on that don't change who wins or loses, but definitely impact those who place bets, because those bets include the a point spread. To a lesser extent the calls will also affect the over/under. Most fans just want their team to win and don't waste a lot of time thinking about the 6.5 point spread on the book, so it goes pretty much unnoticed. It just seems like damn near every game in every sport goes fine for all but the last 5 minutes when the officiants start blowing whistles to keep the results the most friendly to the sports book.

  • @bluebear1985

I would say he cheated. While he did play the game well, he did kind of cheat by using an alias when making his appearance. Usually you would have to use your real name in order to get on a show. Also, it was kind of dumb for him to even appear in the first place. If I was on the run from the law, I would try and keep a low profile, not appear on a game show being broadcast on a major television network where anyone watching could see you.

OK, let's dial it back a notch or two: Big Mac was famous for hitting 700 homeruns in his time with the St. Louis Cardinals (even I idolised him) ; he had a guest voice on the "Simpsons" episode "Brother's Little Helper", he endorsed the McDonald's Big Mac, he had an entire section named in his honour at the first Busch Stadium, etc, so imagine what it's like to have your idol admit in a court of law that those homeruns were ill-gotten. Compared to what Sosa did, in which he admitted he right off the bat made a mistake instead of letting the lie perpetuate, it's a mosquito bite compared to a bullet wound.

Funny part about Lance's case is if you look it up LARGE PORTIONS of Tour de France cyclists doped around that time and prior to all of that. Only after what happened to Lance did the organizers seem to give a crap, and now the OVER 50% of cyclists doping has been reduced to around 4%. But Lance, being the dominant winner of 7 of them, caught all the flak. He also passed all those drug tests and got around all the investigations for YEARS. Something always seemed off about the whole thing to me.

How about John Spano? He bought an NHL team (New York Islanders) while pretending he had remotely close to enough money to do so, "accidentally" writing checks for $5,000 instead of $5,000,000, or $1,700 instead of $17,000,000, having checks bounce, etc. He ended up with a 71 month sentence in addition to paying $11.9 million in restitution for bank fraud, wire fraud, and forgery.

I get the lure of big-name athletes cheating, but what I never understood was the timing. Most of the ones that get caught are usually caught towards the end of their careers or when it starts winding down. At this point, the money is usually not an issue, and it's more pride at that point. If you're not able to compete on the level as your competitors anymore without cheating, it's time to call the career quits and retire.

  • @damp2269

well Olympic athlete is not really the most lucrative career. Just because they cheated it doesn't mean they have abilities beyond what an average joe does, so when they cheat is usually not about the money but the achievement and recognition which explains why they have a tough time stopping.

It may have been a different time, however it still does not make it right either. Lance Armstrong sunk his life and career as a professional cyclist to be in the gutter as Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire and everyone else who was caught cheating in sports. And, what makes this whole thing with Armstrong so sad and pathetic is that he was friends with Robin Williams who stood up for Armstrong when the accuasions were coming down hard in the early 2000s. Armstrong has lost my respect.
