TOP 10 THOUGHTS ON LEARNING MORSE CODE

Are you thinking about learning Morse code (CW)? Are you finding it a struggle? I did too, and I am still learning and practicing. I enjoy hunting Parks On The Air (POTA) in CW and exchanging SKCC numbers. Everyone is different and everyone learns at a deferent speed. As Nike says just do it. Here are my top 10 thoughts after a year of morse code.

FB, sir. Thank you. I’ve been operating CW since getting my novice ticket in 1990. I progressed quickly, I think, because I got on the air quickly. That’s when it becomes fun, and when it’s fun you make progress, without strain. Good advice, all. 73

Great points Keith! I joined LICW about a month ago and I agree that it is a process. I usually learn new things quickly and I have to say that CW is the hardest thing that I have tried to learn. Not as much that it is hard to learn as it is a continual process of learning. If you want to learn CW quickly, good luck. It takes lots of time and as @EvanK2EJT has told me in the past "You get out of it what you put into it." If you want to learn, you have to go to the classes and you have to practice. As you mentioned in this video you can't expect to step away for a few days and then come back at the level that you were at. You have to stick with it every day to "train you brain" to understand what it is hearing. The beauty is that it doesn't take hours a day. In fact, as LICW teaches and you mentioned that it only take a few minutes a day. Again, great points and thanks for sharing. Now I am going to go find that reverse beacon network video of yours. I have been wanting to understand how to use that!

yes, slow but steady. I regret not sticking with it back in 1990-91. Here is the link for the reverse beacon video kzread.info/dash/bejne/oXaGt6mQpZbNk5s.html

The LICW got me on the air. You don't know what you don't know and their goal is to get you on the air as fast possible, you don't need to know how to rag chew.

Great video, learning cw with Long Island training page but have not practiced sending as yet. What do you recommend a straight key or paddle would be interested in your thoughts. Mervyn G8XPD

That is on of those questions that always sparks a huge debate. I have always used a straight key and I really enjoy it. I think at the beginning it helps with the mind-brain-wrist coordination and that you get a better sense of how cw flows. LICW suggests a key and there are several relatively inexpensive ones out there. Mine is from 1989-90 as I needed one for my Canadian licence back then. We had to send and receive at 12 wpm. A straight key can take you up to around 18wpm In the end it is personal preference and what feels right for you.
