Top 10 SECRETS of a Good DRAW/Backspin/Screw-Back SHOT

Спорт

Dr. Dave and Samm Diep demonstrate the Top 10 secret tips for improving your draw (or backspin or bottom-spin or screw-back) shot. They include:
Intro (0:00)
1. Chalk Up (0:40)
2. Aim Low and Carefully (1:28)
3. Warm-Up and Check (2:13)
---- 3a. Eye Pattern (2:36)
4. Keep Cue Level (3:36)
5. Go Back Slow (4:23)
6. Accelerate Smoothly (5:09)
---- 6a. Draw Distance Control (5:52)
7. Keep Your Grip Relaxed (6:48)
8. Be Still (8:52)
9. Don’t Drop Your Elbow (9:20)
10. Finish the Stroke (10:55)
Useful Draw Practice Drills (12:16)
---- side pocket drill (12:19)
---- BU Exam I - F4 - Progressive Practice drill (12:55)
---- Three-times-the-angle "good action" draw drill (13:42)
NOTE (concerning Samm's apparent crooked stroke at 3m7s):
When I watched this shot in person, I was standing right behind the camera and I don't remember her stroke being that crooked. I think I would have noticed if it was, and I would have asked her to shoot again with a straighter stroke. I think it looks crooked in the video partly due to perspective issues with the camera angle and pendulum swing. I have seen this effect is other videos also. Samm's aim might have been slightly off and she might have hit the CB slightly off center, but her stroke was not as crooked as it might have appeared in the video. Again camera perspective can create optical illusions since the vertical angle of the cue (up and down) is changing during the pendulum stroke. Here is a follow-up video that clearly illustrates this effect:

Videa sa gospodinom odgledao sam bezbroj puta ja sam srednje visine a rukom kojom udaram je leva i ocrtava na kraj drške štapa a ruka mi dalja oslonac zbog ubrzavanja kada je blizu dobijem STOP. TAJMING je najteži u BACK Spinu a ja nisam znao koja je najbolja čoja sada je BOSOVA a u skoro svim partijama treba OB-spin a ne CB-spin.

One thing I find amazing about these videos is that watching them helps parts of my game that have nothing to do with the video's subject matter. E.g. with this one, after watching a few times, honestly, my draw shot hasn't improved much yet (I'm a beginner)... but the section @2:30 where Dr. Dave talks about Samm's pre-shot routine and eye/focus switching pattern made something click for me, and cuz of that I've been pocketing balls SOOOOO much better over the past few days. Specifically, it was the sentence about "making sure the cue remains straight" during the practice strokes. Before, I feel like I was just doing the practice strokes because that's what I saw the pros do on TV, lol. I mean.... it felt natural to do them, but i realize now that I didn't really get the point... I wasn't doing the practice strokes with intention and purpose... I was stroking crooked and looking at the object ball as I did. Lately, when I do practice strokes, I make sure to only focus on the cue ball and make sure that the cue stick is stroking straight. Then, I park the cue tip as close to the contact point as possible, pause, look up at the object ball, and try and relax and trust that my arm is going to do the same thing as what it was during the practice strokes, and remind myself to be a relaxed statue, and stroke and boom! Still suck at getting shapes but, hey, at least im pocketing some balls now!! :)))) thank you for the amazing content you provide us, doc

Really enjoyed and learned a few important things I've been doing wrong. As a player who played for 25 years then 20 years of and now months playing again, I've been gripping too tightly and scooping the cue ball off the table far too much. I can still draw the full length of the table (not every time though) but back when I was playing my draw shot was extremely good. I see now where I am going wrong. Thanks Dr Dave !

I think one of the biggest takeaways for me on this was #3: Warm Up and Check, and showing a great example of eye movement in setting up shots. I can't tell you the number of times I've addressed the table and found myself focusing all over the place. Samm's head is also perfectly still and eyes parallel to the table, which tends to be one of my struggles. Excellent video as always, Dr. Dave & Samm!

Fantastic! I remember when I first learned to draw the cue ball and my emotion was similar to yours. Played with an old timer when I was young. He was on my pool team. He LOVED the game of pool and played every day for years and years. He never learned to draw the cue ball. One day he said something sort of off color to me about my game, (I was 3 times better than him) and I spouted off, "the only time you ever drew a cue ball in your life is when you accidentally miscued" heh it was true but I never saw him again. He found another city to play in.

I wish I had seen this video during my time hanging around the pool rooms. I can draw the ball pretty good and developed a decent stroke but the long draw was my achilles heel. Also I learned that pretty much the less english you use the easier to control and try to keep the cue ball in the middle of the table.

Excellent video - you do a great job of explaining the proper techniques and, most importantly, what makes them advantageous. That helps me understand instead of just memorize. One hidden gem in there was at 14:18, where you explain how too much speed actually produces a longer/wider draw. This was very counterintuitive for me - when I wanted more draw, I always hit the cue ball harder, but never understood why it wasn't working (I'm a complete amateur). It never occurred to me that the extra speed was delaying the "bite" of the cue ball's backspin on the table. Can you imagine what you would see if you videoed Bustamante's stroke? Actually, many of the players from the Philippines have rather strange looking ( to us ) strokes, yet are very good to great players. I love to watch Efren, as his stroke may not be what one would call perfect, it gives him excellent results and is so pleasing to watch. His cue ball control is really something to behold! I'll bet he has played more games of pool that anyone else in the world and that is one of the reasons he is so good, the other is his ability to think and see what strategy he needs. There is a reason he is a great chess player. By the way, watching him has improved my game quite a bit and it is mostly in the cue ball control area. I have been trying to "clean up" my stroke and I'm finding that I do better with my old way of stroking the ball. I am 73 and been playing recreational bar pool since I was a young lad. I am guessing the problem with trying to change my stroke mechanics is due to not enough practice time to "learn" a proper stroke and the fact that I have 50+ years of learning to pocket balls with a less than proper stroke. I practice draw often, but always seem to not get the draw I want all the time. I'll keep working, but it isn't as big a deal as it was 40 years ago. If my draw isn't working well on a given day, it makes me think more about my strategy. :-)

I'm British, and the open bridge is the norm here. When working in the States for several months, and playing pool most evenings, I did try the closed bridge, because all my American opponents used it, but particularly when playing screw-back / draw shots, I did find the open bridge far more versatile when it came to lowering the bridge height. I went back to my open bridge, and I found I played just as well. I can't see what advantage a closed bridge gives you.

A closed bridge offers advantages for people with stroke flaws. It also helps keep the cue from bouncing off the bridge (and maybe fouling) with certain types of shots (e.g., power sidespin). It also just feels more secure for some people. However, I am a big fan of the open bridge for all of the reasons here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/bridge/open/

This is common with many people with power shots because the forward momentum of the cue tends to pull the right side of the body forward during the follow through. And with a pendulum stroke, sometimes the grip hand hitting the chest will throw the grip hand out a little, making the tip finish to the left. Again, luckily, all of this occurs after the CB is gone, so it has no effect (unless it happens early, for example due to wrist curl or elbow drop with a chicken-wing motion).

Something for you to consider Dave... A slight tightening of the grip can help you're draw, if you can still deliver the tip of the cue accurately. When you tighten your grip, you're firmly connecting your back arm to the cue, increasing the cue's mass. This added mass increases the efficiency of the energy transfer and can apply more spin than a loose grip. It also widens the ratio of mass between the cue stick and cue ball, helping you to drive through the cue ball with less of a loss of momentum. I do this often when I'm close to the object ball and I want it to draw back quickly, among other times.

  • @DrDaveBilliards

    @DrDaveBilliards

    4 жыл бұрын

Tightening the grip might give you more draw but causing the tip to hit lower on the CB. It might also be necessary for a jab stroke, where you need to limit follow though and/or get out of the way quickly. However, the tip contact time is so small, and the flesh of the hand is so flexible compared to the tip (even with a “death grip”) that grip tightening has negligible effect on tip impact forces. For further explanation, see the info and links here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/grip/light-vs-tight/

Thanks for putting in the work and time for us. .. I would like to ask you to perform an experiment on the pool table that is relevant to what we are talking about here if you find the time... Set up a cut shot where you are cutting an object ball approximately 60 degrees into the corner pocket. set up the object ball 2 feet from the pocket and the cue ball around 4 feet from the object ball. A somewhat severe cut but quite makeable. Now cut the shot in with near-maximum outside english and a medium/hard speed. After you've pocketed the shot 5 consecutive times, mount a cue extension on the butt of your cue and take the shot again as you've done before. Was the result the same? And if not, why?

@@DrDaveBilliards From your link Dave... "A tighter grip (if it is really tight) can effectively add more mass to the cue. So if you can deliver the cue to the ball accurately and with power, a tight grip could result in faster cue ball speed. However, a tighter grip usually results in less cue speed (and less accuracy) for most people" This seems to support my previous post Dr.Dave. Almost word for word. The same added power gained by the added mass, and therefore greater efficiency, also creates a more efficient application of english, does it not? Can I offer an experiment on the pool table, related to this discussion, that may demonstrate? Place an object ball 2 feet from the corner pocket. Now place the cue ball 4 feet away from that object ball in a manner where you would need to cut the ball approximately 60 degrees to pot it. A rather severe but very makeable shot. Now cut the ball in with near-maximum outside english and a medium/hard speed. After you've pocketed the ball 5 times in a row, mount a cue extension on the butt of your cue and take the shot again. Was the result the same? And if not, why? The result might also challenge the notion that only the cue weight 8" to 10" from the tip affect deflection characteristics, which is very related to what's happening here as well. Please try this as I'd like to know your findings. Thanks Dr. Dave.

@@TheJurgisRud The quote on my page was misleading, especially if taken out of context. FYI, I just revised it to read: "Theoretically, a really tight grip could effectively add mass to the cue, but this effect is very small since a typical tip is so much stiffer than the flesh contacting the cue in the grip hand. But if you could deliver the cue to the ball accurately and with power, a really tight grip could theoretically result in slightly faster cue ball speed. However, a tighter grip usually results in less cue speed (and less accuracy) for most people. Also, see the section at the top of the page."

@@TheJurgisRud Concerning your cue-extension experiment, the added weight of the cue can certainly change the outcome of the shot. The added weight won't affect squirt, but it could result in more (or less) CB speed, depending on how your stroke changes with the added weight, and any change in CB speed will affect swerve and net CB deflection. For more info dealing with these topics, see: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/squirt/cause/ billiards.colostate.edu/faq/squirt/speed-effects/ billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue/weight/

Google Translate: DR DiVE, I have been playing billiards since I was 11 years old, and I know everything, even your 1st exercise, when the white brothers are over the table and the one where they are seven and eight, I haven't taken it off yet, but because of BACK SPIN I always lost, even over the horns. It makes my cue longer. That's all I really wanted it for (since I am tall: 6'3"). It also adds weight, which I didn't like at first (since I was over-hitting everything), but I have grown to like this. Cue extenders can also change the balance point of a cue, but this is not important to me, per the info here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue/balance/

Hey Dr. Dave what do you think about SVB's draw technique? In the transition from back to front stroke he slides the butt of the cue through his fingers (he almost opens his hand) and swings his wrist. Seems to help prevent and transition issues in a power draw but I love you opinions so I'm curious what you think!!

A lot of good advice in this video. That said, some criticism follows: 1. There's nothing wrong with elbow drop, as long as you deliver the cue in a straight line, and Ronnie O'Sullivan is the best proof of it. 2. It's not true that longer bridge gives you more precision (again, look at snooker pros). Yes, long bridge let's you accelerate smoothly which mitigates loss of precision due to jerky stroke. But with long bridge all errors of your grip hand are drastically magnified on the cue tip. Most players achieve greater precision with shorter bridge. But it's a trade-off and a matter of personal preference, so find out what works best for you. 3. Sam Diep technique: (a) cueing across the cue ball terribly, (b) bridge too long, beyond any reason, (c) if your custom bridge (tip of thumb pressed to index finger) works for you, then fine, keep doing it, but not in educational videos (surely you do know how to form proper bridge).

Here is the "NOTE (concerning Samm's apparent crooked stroke at 3:07)" from the video description: "When I watched this shot in person, I was standing right behind the camera and her stroke looked perfectly straight. I think it looks crooked in the video due to perspective issues with the camera angle and pendulum swing. I have seen this effect is other videos also."

Thanks for not using that drop in the puddle intro byte. Hey, Doc... Being also into the physics of the mechanical realm, I'd love it if yous guys would check out some of your draw techniques using an old Valley metallic cue ball. I have found that they alter game play perhaps due to overall weight or maybe how the mass of the ball is distributed within. Anyway, I find that I have a harder time achieving same like draw performance as with a regular phenolic ball. And even normal glance angles and rolls differ a bit. Am I crazy?

@@DrDaveBilliards So you have never heard any claim that the valley magnetic cue ball plays differently? You must not have done much bar table culture over the years. I have played on Valley bar boxes for many years in VNEA leagues and tournaments with the magnetic CB. I even did some weighing and measuring of a large number of Valley CBs many years ago. See the bottom of this article: billiards.colostate.edu/bd_articles/2012/feb12.pdf I have also studied ball weight/size difference effects in detail. See: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/ball/weight/ Anecdotally, I have not noticed any real performance differences with the Valley CBs, except when they are dirty or when the cloth is new or old and dirty. But these effects are the same with all balls, per the info here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/table/cloth-effects/ and here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/ball/cleaning/ I have noticed Valley CBs being out of balance at times, where they don't roll straight when hit slowly on a level table, but that's about it.

@@DrDaveBilliards Again... I notice getting same like draw performance is an obvious never happens thing. It should be an easy check and dispute. I have a harder time achieving good draw shots with them. It can't just be me. Others have agreed with me. Don't see many APA game players using heavy draw either. But they use replacement cue balls in some of those matches. I noticed... others noticed... Maybe you only give some things a cursory glance and apply your "I know this is how it is" to it and never actually do any analysis. Like with the close stroke shots. You are used to seeing level stick videos of double tip strike fouls. Do you really think that there is no way for a human to do it right? My contention is that if a hop shot is legal and considered a single tip strike, then my elevated strokes can be examined and see that I only strike the ball once. But all of your replies have been blanket presumptions of failure and perhaps include you not even looking at the video(s). I spent inordinate amounts of time looking at yours, and mine are only a few seconds each, yet you nor any of your experts has looked or commented on them. It's not like I am trying to make money off them. It is about pool.
