I'm mostly able to clean 7ft table on first turn in 8 ball. You made clear all of my questions in physics. This is the most helpful video I've seen on this technique. I'm the type of person that needs to understand the logic of how something works to learn it, and this breakdown was great for that. The things that really got me to learn it was using a striped ball to learn where to hit, and dropping back on the cue for a consistent stroke. Really well explained, left a like

For draw: loose grip --> meaning not a death grip. Don't try a loose grip because you'll be thinking about your freekin hand the hole time. Thats the last place where you want your concentration. Stay relaxed and hit the piss out of it. If your going to lengthen your bridge so that you'll have more time to accelerate don't over exaggerate it; if your stroke feels awkward it probably is. FYI the Kamui black tips are awesome but go for the medium because the soft just doesn't keep its shape

@florent2911 1) Check your contact point on the cue ball. Substitute a striped ball for the cue ball, as shown at 1:05. Look at the chalk mark on the ball after you shoot. Is it where you thought you hit the ball, or is it higher? 2) Verify that your tip is in good condition, roughed up, and well chalked. 3) Proper acceleration is crucial for draw. Here is an exercise for you to try. Spend 5 minutes a day for the next 2 weeks doing the following:

it could also be caused that you are playing on a tabel that requiers a bigger cueball then the other balls. I have a bar in my city that has that kind of table. You have to hit it lower and really accurate and really hard(unless the object ball is close) to perform a good draw shot.

The non-slick cloth can definitely make draw more difficult, but I suspect the problem is more with your technique than with the cloth. To get more draw, it is simple ... you need to hit the cue ball lower (to get more backspin) and with more speed (so less backspin is lost on the way to the object ball. FYI, more advice can be found in the FAQ section of my website (see the link in the video description above).

Through watching many "Draw" videos, they all claimed one should have a short stroking distance, 6 ~ 8 inches maximum. Of course none of their draw shots showed the Q Ball drawing very far. Their limitations were all about 1/2 as far as my abilities when I am doing a mild draw attempt. Normally I draw a full table length, but my power draw shots (when I am "on" is much longer. It is my power draw shots I am looking to improve and so I am seeking to discover what I am doing wrong. Years ago I could draw the Q~Ball nearly twice the length of the pool table, but I lost some ability there over the years and wanted to get that ability back. Mike Massey showed his power draw and I noticed he lengthened his bridge to 10 - 12" and this is the first video agreeing with Mike Massey. Mike showed his power draw with his lengthened bridge and it worked, of course.

This helped a lot, I can draw pretty decent but then sometimes I would hop it and I could never figure out why. Turns out I was tightening my grip right before striking the ball, mainly on draw shots that needed more power. Ever since I tried keeping my arm relaxed through the whole shot I've been way more consistent, and not on draws alone. Thanks for the advice!

@florent2911 3) (cont.) Take your cue and practice accelerating through your stroke. With your back hand in the full backstroke position, begin bringing it forward SLOWLY. As you move through the stroke, accelerate smoothly until your hand stops by contacting your chest. Keep your elbow high. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Your tip will maintain contact with the cue ball longer, giving you much better backspin. Use that stroke for all your shots, and you may notice your shots have a new crispness.

This is great information. I've been struggling putting draw on the ball. I think I'm bridging to close to the ball and angling my shaft too much. I don't suppose you know anyone in utah that would teach lessons. Videos are great but if you're doing something wrong there is no one to tell you. Pool sucks here pretty much just little bar tournaments with 3 tables.

Possible causes: - tip not holding chalk well - tightening grip during the stroke - aiming too low on the ball For useful advice, click on the EDU link at the bottom of the video description above, go to the FAQ section, and check out the "draw shot - advice and drills" section.

I'm still a novice player and I go to the pool hall by myself all the time to practice and I have played with the draw shot and have so much trouble with it I keep jumping the cue ball but this video has helped but the cue ball only draws back about and inch or two

@florent2911 The most common problem is dropping the elbow, which makes you hit the CB higher than you think. Keep the grip relaxed, keep the elbow still, and accelerate into the ball. FYI, I have lots of good advice and resources to help with the draw stroke on the FAQ page of my website. Check it out.

good solid info.....now the thing to remember is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. i would say a month of shooting draw shots 3-4 hours a day will give you confidence and the ability to shot the draw about 80-90 % of the time. after 2 or 3 years of practice it will be close to 95 % .... do you have the ability to practice pool that much..or do you even want to?

This is usually caused by tightening the grip during the stroke, which lowers the tip.

i have a hard tip on my cue stick, and i've been playing pool for years, doing a draw shot is hard with a hard tip, that could be a problem too. so I'd reccomend having a soft tip to do draw shots

I tried aiming for the bottom of the stripe and miscued like 10 times in a row. I had the cue as level as I could, running the back on the rail or just barely over it. I think I must have the slightly larger stripes. I made sure to chalk up well, and I could even observe the chalk spot right on the edge of the stripe.

  • @DrDaveBilliards

Some stripe widths are larger than the "standard" half diameter. See the video and other info here for how to easily check: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/sidespin/maximum/

Also, if the back of the cue is elevated some (as it always needs to be at a pool table), the stripe needs to be aligned parallel with the cue. See: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/draw/cue-elevation/

@@DrDaveBilliards I watched your top 10 tips for draw shots video. I actually think I need to work on every single tip to some extent. I was always afraid the cue ball would come back and hit my cue so I tried to find a way to stop the cue after contact. Which led me to either tense up my shoulder or arm causing me issues with accuracy. I also have too much 'slop' in my grip. I see what you mean about the stripe line being parallel with the cue from the diagram. When I was attempting the shot I had the stripe as parallel with the table as I could. But given the unavoidable elevation of the cue I should have rotated the stripe slightly up and away from me. I'll also try the test you showed with the 3 balls to see if the stripes are standard size or not.

I see your comment is old, but I am just learning this shot myself, and for me a huge problem I have is following through improperly. I think I pull up my cue too quickly to try to avoid the cue ball hitting the cue on the rebound, and I miscue every time that my follow through is wrong. I've had better luck when I follow through so that the tip of the cue is touching the table at full extension - now I just have to figure out how to get the cue out of the way on the rebound.

So, I have an 8ft pool table at my home. It is not a pro table obviously, and the felt is old, I brush it everyday but it's old for sure. The felt feels like wool and looks like the one on this video. My draw is non existent in my home table, however at my job we have a 7ft new table the cloth looks and feels different, it seems less "heavy" and I do produce draws of the lenght of the table. The balls are the same set both in my home and in my job. Is felt really that important/crucial with the draw shots? I do not have this problem with follow shots or english/sidespin shots.

TheDjentGuy The cloth can make a big difference with draw shots. See: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/table/cloth-effects/ If the CB is a little heavier than the OBs, that can also make draw more difficult. See: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/ball/weight/

Very well made and very informative. Would the size of the cue ball make a huge difference? The table I have access to has similarly sized cues, but the balls are much smaller

I think the advice is the same for all ball sizes; although, if the tip is too large with a small ball, you won't be able to get low enough. FYI, many more videos and info on this topic can be found here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/draw/advice-and-drills/

I don't feel a need for this because I'm in fairly good shape and I stay limber. However, someone who has a lot of stiffness or tightness in their neck and back might benefit from a little motion and stretching before playing.
