I like these drills you’ve demonstrated.

I have found that if you tighten your grip as you're hitting the cue ball, it'll cause your tip to dip into the cloth and cause a miscue. Very informative! Thank you!

Excellent. Not only was I listening to your explanations, I was watching your stroke. You do not draw the cue stick back until long after the stroke. When I try to draw a shot I am like "Quick Draw McGraw" not to mention too hard as well. My other strokes are smother. In golf I would call it a "yip." Been playing recreational pool most of my life and never have mastered that shot; but I keep trying. Keep it up because you are a good instructor. Thanks

Thanks and you have a nice pleasant way of explaining very casually the importance of all the fundamentals necessary to execute a good draw shot. Everything must work in harmony with one another in order for the long draw shot to work e.g. loose grip, level to the table, hitting low, pendulum position of the arm, etc. Also one's pool equipment such as always chalking up and the shape of one's pool tip. I too have difficulty with longer draw shots...I'm fine with smaller shorter draws and can execute fairly well short-range draw shot drills but on longer shots its been a bit of hit or miss drawing a down range ball only a few inches versus feet as in shown in your videos which to me represents the ideal in certain situations like the one you showed with your next shot along the short rail with the need to come back feet not inches. So was intrigued by your close up diagram of the tip and the dime and had not taken the time to check this out for awhile on my cue which is a Lucasi with OB Pro shaft. Just like in your photo I got out my magnifying glass to really enlarge and inspect the shape of my tip as compared to a dime. 'Lo and behold the tip definitely did not match up perfectly relative to the curvature of a dime. No doubt this has impeded me in making the shot as good as it can be with the shape of my tip unable to maximize backward spin on my follow through. Thanks for taking the time to get into the importance of this as well by use of an enlarged close up. I am confident you have improved my chances of success and have now subscribed and hit the bell as you deserve. Keep up the good work!

That was my thought as well…I always thought my problem had to do an inability to recoil fast enough. Hence, being able to draw the ball further on short shots vs. long. Short shots the cue ball’s still spinning, but the further away the the cue ball quickly loses the spin.

Love your drills especially the cross bank drills

I found this unorthodox method to help prevent my elbow from dropping without natural tightening the grip I placed a racking triangle inside my elbow and I have been doing for several months, now the feel is replicated without placing.

Thanks Mo. That drill can be a monster to people not used to playing those shots. Some people can draw the Cue ball for miles but can't get past the third ball in that drill.

great instructions....once in a while I popcorn the shot and the cue ball seems to be a direct projected object heading for my cat on the floor....lol. yet now after viewing this video and a few more other videos from here my shots seem better yet of all the shots I have ever encountered, the draw is the hardest for me to hit due to jumping the cue ball if not hit just right. I guess I just need more practice yet with this video it has speeded up the process, thanks. btw cat is ok....he just now remains distant from my table when I practice.

Hi Brian. Excellent video. One thing thats helped me immeasurably is the old rule of finding the balance spot between the tip and the end of the butt of the cue. Once this is done I move my butt hand about five inches back on the butt. This insures that the cue stays level through out the stroke, not rising or dipping at the last second and I achieve good draw. I do this when my bridge hand is near the tip. When I want a lot of draw, my bridge hand is farther up the shaft towards the butt and my butt hand is very near the end of the butt. Both of these techniques help to insure that the cue stays as level as possible I think. I hope my wording on this isn`t confusing to the reader. As I`ve said this technique really has helped my draw shots. Thanks a lot. Cheers.👍

Brian, I think people will understand. For myself, I have stayed away from measuring balance points because every cue I pick up (mostly due to my height) I end up holding near the very end of the cue. When I was young, I even added weights to the cue to help keep from having to do this. So my cue is always "top heavy" for lack of a better word.

Also need to know that you do not have to slam it to get drawback.actually in most cases you get more drawback by hitting it lighter. The only time you really need to slam it is a full table draw shot.

How do you get lots of spin without hitting it very hard? I see the pros do it and draw three rails or all the way back down the table, etc, but they don't slam it.I'm "slamming" it just to get three or four feet of draw. I know I'm doing it wrong, but I can't figure out how to get more spin with less force. It sounds like going against the laws of physics! Thank you to anyone who answers!

@@timaloha you just have to have a smooth level stroke and a good follow through. As long as you follow through the cue ball you can get a lot more out of it. Try putting the tip a little lower with a slower speed and just follow through with the ball but you still have to hit it hard enough for the drawer to take

Interesting Bryan mentioned to take the follow shot if you can because it is easier to control, for me especially

Yes, having a good draw shot somethings traps people into a bad pattern. Being the show off that I am, I have surely taking some draw shots that could have been done differently. Thanks for watching.

If I see an adversary do a long draw shot it is "Oh no, this guy will likely win against me."

Douglas Stovall you hit the OB as if you are aiming for the edge of the pocket. Example. Left English left side of the pocket is your target. Right English right side. It’s not easy but something you will pick up after a number of shots and hours of practice.

My draw isnt that great but I see I'm hitting too high so in essence I'm really performing a stop shot. I notice you hit the table after contacting the cue ball. I pull up just before doing that so I bet that really cuts down on the rotation. This is on my hot list of things to improve.

Great... Now we can add little more : object line move on spot line (black spot) and cueball on break line - draw back to cusion and back to middle of table... It will be great to see... Course my favorite shot is draw.... Regards and keep good work..tnx

I have a tendency to jump the cue ball when I do a jump shot. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to solve the problem?

My friend has found my back hand not in the line of the shot .moreover, he has told me that the hand is not loose enough while playing a shot l.

Help! I am 65. Been playing for decades. I am a good player. Straight pool, one pocket. Nineball. I am , all of a sudden having trouble with my stroke. For some reason, when I draw the cue ball, I am leaving skid marks on the table that seem to dive off to the left. Also, miscues. It seems like maybe something going on with my wrist. Advice? Thank you. Andy

The trouble I had was that I had in my mind that on a power draw, I had to hit the cue ball fast. Once I slowed down my stroke, (especially my back stroke), and focused on timing, it was a lot easier to maintain my posture.

I really like the Wilkard's shaping tool. Question for you Bryan. I shoot with a 13mm tip. My shaping tool is nickel size. Should I reduce it to dime size or reduce my tip then change to a dime size shaping tool? Great video today man! Be well, Al-Fu

Good questions. I used a nickel for many years and it worked fine. Because you have a 13, you are likely fine with what you have. If you are not getting the action you need, try the dime. What I failed to say in the video was that the dime is less forgiving if you are off center on your long shots. Because it applies more english, it can work for you or against you.

Without seeing your stroke, 90% of the time it’s because you’re not hitting the ball as low as you think you are with enough follow through. Try using a shorter bridge hitting the ball much lower than you think you can, and make sure you’re shooting through the ball and not jerking your cue back don’t try the longer draw shots until you’ve mastered the shorter ones say one diamond a part

Nice effort sir! How to improve my follow through as I am a bit taller i.e.6.5 ...the result is I can't draw in longer shots.

Your height should not effect your follow through but if it does: Take a wider stance that will put you closer to the table. If you can't draw long shots, it's simply from not putting in enough work shooting them. It can take months of practice for a player to get to the point that they can draw a ball back on 4 or 5 foot shots. Keep the cue level, stay down on the shot and follow through. When you have those steps in place, shoot about 200 per day at distances you can manage and increase that distance slowly over time. I shoot over 50, mid to long range draw shots every day. 50 made shots, not just 50 shots.

We play at a club where I am member , my rival pots the ball like a machine, whom I have to defeat.Mine experience is more than 20 years but still my poor addiction of clutching the cue resists my improvement in the game. I want to find success in long potting ,where I am vulnerable.

I believe i have mastered the slow draw, but the long draw is a nightmare for me. I have small hands therefore a closed bridge seems difficult. I probably need to invest a couple hours daily only on long draw with open bridge. Great video as usual. Thanks Bryan

I need advice on a tip

It looked in the close-yps that each shot you took, you hit the tip on the cloth? Is that necessary? I paid a lot for my table, and I'd hate to ruin the felt.

If your tip is not hitting the cloth you’re not hitting the ball as low as you can. You will not rip your cloth with a proper draw shot. Thanks for watching and thanks for your question.

Thanks for posting these. I have one issue I'm trying to overcome on my long power draw shot. About 40% of the time I end up putting a small amount of side spin on the cueball. Forcing the object ball to end up throwing one way or another. Do you ever have this problem? If so. What do you do to correct this. P.s. I dont have this issue on the short or the medium draw shots. Only when there is great distance between the cueball and object ball. And I'm attempting to draw it back to the rail closest to where the cueball started.

Raymond Batt It’s hard for me to diagnose you without seeing the shot but I can tell you what it might be. Because your stroke is probably longer on those shots you may be moving the cue either on your back stroke or as you move forward. You also may be moving your body in anticipations of hitting the ball harder. If you’re using an open bridge, trytry a closed bridge. Also try progressive drills which I will be talking about in a video later this week. I hope this helped

@@FXBilliards thank you for the response. I typically do use an open bridge. I did use a closed bridge for these shots in particular when I was using my z3 shaft. About 2 months ago I transitioned to a 12.5 cuetec cynergy carbon. Since then the open bridge had works well for me. I will give the closed bridge another go and see if that works. I typically dont hit the ball harder on my long draw, but I do have a longer bridge distance and I pull the cue all the way back in order to create more power that way. So it could also be my body shift. I'll record it and take a look. Very possibly to be the issue. Thanks again.

Hey Billy, I use a 12.4 on a Revo shaft and Predator Blak 4 butt these days. My other shafts are slightly larger.

After a session of practicing long draws for an hour or two, my tip goes from a dime to nickel shape. I assume it’s because I’m not hitting purely; I can shoot softer with about a table length of draw, but I’m trying to up my speed and accuracy. I’m just wondering if anyone had this experience? Shooting with a kamui tan medium.

Hi Brian. Thanks for the video. I am a decent player. I am playing on 3 leagues a week (before 'Rona hit). I have a table at home. I practice everyday. Recently I started scooping the draw shot and it's driving me crazy. It's like in golf when you get the shanks...out of NOWHERE. I am practicing everyday. Do you have any specific advice on what my be causing this scooping and how do I fix it. Also, are they any drills specifically adressing scooping? Thanks in advance Greg Saiter.

@@gregsaiter3768 I am sorry I did not get to answer your question during the Live Stream- So here you go. You are having issues with the longer (harder) draws, most likely for one of a few reasons. Check out each one to see what you think it might be: A) Are you dipping your shoulder and as a result, the tip of the cue is not at the point you aimed. B) Make sure your cue is as level as possible and try to avoid any body movement during the shot (other than you shooting arm. C) You might be moving the cue tip lower during the back stroke. Make sure you pause for a second before your final stroke. That might help keep the cue in the right spot. Try these and let me know what you think.

I think 90 percent of low to mid level players. Dont have a loose grip like you do. It took me a while too , getting use to something new isnt easy. I agree that a tight grip is no good

There are not many, if any, pool shots that benefit from a tight grip.

I'm trying to follow all the rules to making a good draw shot but 9/10 times I do a "stop" shot instead. any idea why?

That usually means you did not hit the cue ball low enough or you did not follow through on the shot. Sometimes when people try too hard their cue moves up and they don’t hit the ball where they think they’re hitting it

I asked my wife to take a slow motion video of my draw shot attempts and indeed just like you said, I'm not hitting the cue ball low enough, I move up at the very last micro second. The best way I can describe how I do it now is to : "pretend you're hitting so low that you're trying to rip and put a hole on the felt but don't actually do it." that seems to work for me. thanks again for the great tips and your awesome channel. you have no idea how much your videos have helped me get better. cheers my friend!

Just wanted to put it out there, I’ve been playing this game for a couple of years, it’s called “8 ball mini clip” from App Store. I think the game is very realistic and I find that it helps my practice looking at the table to try and figure out my run outs. Hopefully you all will give a try. I never play any type of games on my phone because when I do, later I feel like I’ve wasted my time. Time that I could’ve been creating. But I think you might have a point. FXBilliards Np. I have to tell you “ this one” is very realistic. And as you start to earn more money and have more money in the pot you can play $10,000 games these games require you to call every pocket. It’s very good.

I am really struggling with this kind of shot. Whether I hit soft or hard I only get stop shots.

It could be a number of issues but most likely it's your stroke. You are hitting under the ball when you think you are hitting the cue ball. If your stroke is off just millimeters you will scoop the ball. Work on hitting it very slow and building up speed as you get better at hitting the cue ball in the correct spot. If you miscue, you are hitting under the ball. Your stroke is what is broken. You are likely moving your body during your stroke and not hitting the cue ball where you think you are hitting it.
