Absolutely spot on. Also guilty of not practicing these shots, except for the lag. I do put in reps on lag shots. This actually helps with not just winning the lag, but also getting an understanding on how the table is playing. Appreciate the video. Going to have to work on these.

I like your comment that if you practice a difficult shot twenty times each day, Thats twenty more than your opponent. Another short story, I used to play at a pool hall that was managed by Dallas west (look him up if you don’t know him). My friend and I were playing during the day when it was busy there. My friend had a long shot and needed to use the bridge. He told me to hand him the crutch. Dallas came over and said “Why do you call that the crutch when it’s there to help you make a shot?” Thats always kind of stuck with me. Thanks for all the videos too Bryan!

Consistency is key and the key to consistency is practice, there's never really been a shortcut. It's important to know what to practice though, great video and presentation.

Very very very Excellent Content and tips B. Alot of ppl need to here that time and time again I'm a Strong APA 6 and STILL! Struggle shooting off the rail

I broke my left foot and ankle about 3.5 weeks ago so I have been working on my bridge work out of pure necessity and boredom. Also, if someone is having trouble finding the line of the shot, try doing it on 1 leg. It actually makes it easier to become comfortable with the shot line. I'm back to 2 legged shooting now. Ir eally helped my stroke, alignment and tempo to be handicapped to 1 leg shooting. I tried to turn a negative circumstance into a positive. For once, it actually worked. Thx for the great info as always B!

So true only time I leave on rail is if it'd a two way shot if I'm not sure I can make the shot and if I miss I want to challenge whoever I'm playing to get another turn on the table. Thanks for your time I enjoy your videos

As usual Brian, great advice! I see so many people in APA struggling to use a bridge properly. By properly, I simply mean to their advantage for the particular shot. I offer the bridge, even to opponents, when they should consider it, and get refused too many times. For my teammates, I encourage them to practice with it, and put it on the table as you suggest. Use your bridge hand to anchor it also, not let it dance around like making a bridge above the table....midair! A missed shot usually ensues!

I'm a new subscriber and I really enjoy your videos. A lot of times the difference between winning and losing comes down to one shot. It helps to know what gives you the best chance of making that shot.

Good tip

Play "bridge pool" with your friends as a warm up. All shots must be played with the bridge regardless. The stupid shots that are ridiculous with a bridge are the ones that demand the most concentration and actually (if you are really focused) will have the biggest impact on improving your comfort when using a bridge. Another quick one is simply that the black ball must be potted using the bridge. Or for that guy who's better than the rest, the last x balls must be played with the bridge slowing him down (well at least until it really does improve his bridge use for regular games) A little fun can make practice time fly by. I am always referring your videos to fellow players, thank you they are great help to learning by being guided.

Love how you ended with a flawless lag with no editing. 😆

Piggybacking off the running a rack with the bridge idea.... CJ recommends shooting racks and moving the cue ball close to the rail before each shot.

I think this is the first video that I've seen that has zero dis-likes! At least something older than 5 minutes.

Good Tips on the rail distance cut shots are tough.

True I have to practice these shots. oy

Most events I've played in, you can't lag with a cue ball, if there is only 1 of them, and you can't lag with a stripe. Solids only.

Great video Brian. I'm a senior and play 2 hrs each day at the center with my partner at 8 & 9 ball. However, when you asked do you like to break I'm shaking my head....no. Maybe because I've had a couple of shoulder surgeries and am a little hesitant- I'm not a good breaker, but my partner is. I love pool and will try some of those practice methods. Thank you so much.

Brian - when shooting over a ball, for people with average size hands, three fingers, middle, ring and pinky, on the table is better than four because you can tip your hand to the side and get more height than just the length of your index finger. The three fingers on the table can be placed to touch table in a triangle pattern for best stability.

GREAT VIDEO!!! The rail info is spectacular. I haven’t been watching as many since you put out the video a few weeks ago about how to move up in the APA skill levels (3 to 4 to 5) by just solo practicing racks - shot after shot. You suggested Not using up time by playing others - cause it takes too long for them to figure out strategy & what shots to make. Except I have a Friday afternoon friend whose better than me & we have regular weekly duels until whoever first reaches 20 games, then start over. Meanwhile the solo practice is paying off. Gradually winning more APA games. When you did the Goals video, I aimed for a L4 by January. It will be a stretch, but think I can make it if shoot straight & play smart & patient - particularly in 8-Ball. As always, thanks for your Leadership. WildFire!

that lag made me cry, lol.

I find when shooting over a ball to hit a cue ball that I can still usually lower the stick a ‘fraction’ after I have my bridge hand set up. Even lowering the cue an an eighth to a a quarter inch helps with accuracy. Also, if a bridge hand feels awkward, within reason, I don’t try to adjust it on the table but step back and start over. My hand seems to instinctively make a better bridge the second time. Thanks for the Great info in this video. I practiced a few on my snooker table.

Great content, thanks Bryan 👍Rail shots have been happening to me less and less, your advice of thinking about the shot and where the cue ball's going is on the mark, it still happens so I do get practice on them. I haven't practiced with the bridge, I use it when I need it so it gets regular use, although if it's a short shot I will try shooting left handed to get more familiar with it. I am getting better at the back cut shots with more practice, using a bit of outside english makes a huge difference. I do have a home table, and I'm retired, I spend a bit time on it every day.

Hey Bryan - Guilty as charged. Although I do practice some of these shots once in a while, it is nowhere near enough. It really hit home when you compared practicing things like banks shots, masse and others to these you recommend. I will definitely shift the balance. As always, appreciate you. - Pete

I do struggle shooting over the ball I’ll try opening my hand up more should help and also shooting straight off the rail my 2 weaknesses

Also on rail shots keep a shorter compact stroke, move your rear foot back a little and get your head down closer to the cue. For me, different types of shafts don't make any shot easier or harder, just require different technique. I always try to shoot the right shot for the situation. Shots you fear or are not good at need work, not avoidance.

Same... guilty as charged😔... I have to work on my attitude! ... force myself to do the things I don't want to do in pool🎱👍

When shooting over a ball I let the cue rub against my ribs. This method worked so well that I even did it on long shots.

Good stuff as always, I try to shoot a couple of lag shots before each match if I can, it really helps. I carry a cinch bridge(fits on my break cue) in my bag in case I'm shooting in spot with limited gear (how many bars bother to supply a bridge for there one coin-op table). Thanks Brian!

Great stuff Brian, thanks. Love your mention of making someone practice playing whole rack with the bridge :) I call it "penance." One hint for making the bridge easier, I use the Tiger leather bridge head, it has a better feel for me more like skin then metal or plastic and will never mar my old school wood shaft.

Just for laughs: When doing entire racks with the bridge, as you suggested; If you find you are actually shooting a little better, than that means you need to work on your hand "bridge."

For bridging over balls I've switched to the the: middle and ring finger (knuckles down or raised to different levels, all the way up to finger tips) with the index and pinky out to the side. Pretty versatile. I notice a lot of pros using it. Even for their regular open bridge. You can get very close to the blocking ball too.

Speaking of the lag. The one thing I absolutely hate about lagging, is when the other player sticks their butt way out and bumps / brushes you. I get that often in Apa, not so much in Tapp or higher caliber leagues.

I'm quite short and I learned to shoot right and left handed so I didn't have to use a bridge but as I got older it's the truth sometimes the cheater stick is your best bet

Good, common sense stuff right here👍.. I hate the bridge mostly because my depth perception sux at the longer distance (I'm sure I need glasses,lol). I taught myself to shoot off hand but it's only good for the most basic of shots for me, lol... We all should spend more time on lags & breaks for sure. Several of the guys I play on league with can regularly break and run so you gotta have that lag in your pocket or you might not get up to bat, lol

On the rail shots, with my grip hand, I'll grip in a manner that applies some downward pressure on the shaft to minimize the chance of rolling the cue tip over the cue ball. Who hasn't done that? Also, on shorter rail shots, I'll shorten my stroke to more of a poke stroke for more control. This also minimizes the chance of rolling the cue tip over the cue ball. And yeah, who practices shooting jacked up over a ball? Short of being snookered, shooting jacked up is a worst case scenario.

I love it in the bar where they think a bridge is for sissies. So I shake my head and watch them miss. I’d rather look professional than silly!

Guilty of some luckily not all. Thought for a second you were starting out with the main shot I have issues with that I need to practice. The lead in was accurate play it off the rail so you don't get straight. But, I so often end up with an object ball on the short rail frozen or almost frozen and I misplay position and get straight in with the cue ball almost frozen or frozen on the short rail and the next ball is always on the other short rail. Seems like I put myself in this spot at least once every 10 racks and getting out of it is absolutely horrendous.

I practice all those shots every day two racks off the short rail.

You can put inside english on almost every back cut just as effectively as outside.

Inside can be more difficult on some shots than outside. You are sending the ball away from the pocket as opposed to towards the pocket, making the adjustment trickier. Thanks for watching Mark. Hope you are subscribing.

Here in the PH any ball touch causes a foul. So when shooting over a ball I put my hand on the table (if possible) with my fingers as close to the ball as possible and then raise my bridge. I kept hitting the ball with my large spastic hands until I started this. I never had this problem until I started wearing glasses (I have the same problem going down stairs.) There is a snooker player from Thailand who uses the bridge as if it is an extension of his left hand. His left hand is under the cue, and his right arm uses a regular motion. In other words he gets down over the cue and swings his arm from the elbow just like a regular shot. I’ve tried it in practice, but it is so foreign I just can’t get it.

Lagging: I improved my lag of course by practicing it. For me, I figured out a bridge length and stroke length that almost felt like I’m letting gravity move the cue forward. Of course some forward motion needs to be added to only gravity, but using a consistent bridge length and stroke length and the least amount of pushing the cue helped me with speed control. In fact, this came from a speed control drill I found where we move the CB one diamond, then two, then three, etc. all the way up to up and back across the table length. For the lag, it feels as though gravity is moving the arm, rather than muscles.

I'm having real trouble drawing a shot. I'm able to draw the CB maybe 3-5 inches at most. What are your suggestions?

My biggest problem in shooting is the long green show Even if it is a straight in shot I can Cut a ball where it almost goes backwards What do I need to practice to get these long green shots

I like using a stripe horizontally, that's one I hadn't heard before. Thx. Any comment on the "tip" that the speed you use for a winning lag should also be your "standard" speed for other shots (not that all shots are at standard speed but ...)? Perhaps baseline speed is a better term.

I cant say that I have ever heard that, but MY lag is far under the speed I would use for just about any other shot. This would be equivalent to NOT letting out your stroke and that is highly unrecommended. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comments.

Lol I can't stand that bridge stick 😂 because I am tall myself and I can stretch to make most shots in those situations,but there are some situations where I have no choice.

Hi Bryan what if you have small pool 4 legs kinda like ping pong table like for kid's and it's a small room a small cue stick there's a wall on the side of pool table you have to hold the stick Up how can you find a better way to hit the cue ball

When you practice, just move the ball with your hand away from the rail so that you can work on your shots without the obstruction.

in most games in most places that does not mean you lose. Your opponent gets ball in hand and the game goes. on.

Two things to keep in mind is that 50 is an average and that includes everything. Most of them would make a lot more money making KZread videos. Which is why so many started making KZread video lol many of them have side jobs just to make ends meet
