When you consider that kids are just as drawn to charismatic villains as they are to heroes, and that the "American" characters _aren't_ portrayed as universally incompetent or inferior, it almost makes you wonder if the more-recent iteration of Squirrel and Hedgehog isn't a veiled attempt at reverse propaganda by its writers. That's to say nothing of the kid's that'll become obsessed with the fox woman and kickstart NK's own furry fandom in her honor.

I tried to find a link to show you, but I failed. There is a Soviet made WW2 cartoon where Hitler goes to Napoleon's grave to ask for advise, and Napoleon's skeleton ends up strangling Hitler. It's worth a watch if only for the "WTF" moments.

A recurring theme I see in his political cartoon works is anti "America First" and how we shouldn't just sit idly by while Germany was committing horrors beyond imagination (he even said that the "America First" ideology and Nazism weren't that far off from one another), how we should value Black and Jewish people in the war effort and treat them as equals in the fight and calling to challenge America's racial prejudice. A lot of these themes carried over into his children's books. Horton Hears a Who I believe was about Japanese Internment, Yurtle the Turtle was literally about the rise and fall of Hitler ("I know, up on top you are seeing great sights, but down here on the bottom, we, too, should have rights") or dismantling superiority over an oppressed class in The Sneetches, and The Lorax was described by the man himself as propaganda against corporate greed and destroying the environment.

As a Russian 90's kid, I grew up on USSR cartoons, and oh boy it is a Deep Sea. I strongly recommend you to dive into it some day. Don't know how much of them have english subtitles tho. I also remember an atheism propaganda cartoon, so yeah, Russians even made fun of god in cartoons. But most of cartoon propaganda are kind and tried to teach us stuff like doing our chores, study well at school, respect our parents, etc.

Sarah McManus he is from 90's, how would he know? It honestly wasn't all that bad. Yeah, there was not so many stuff to buy or watch, but people had money, there was almost no poor and no homeless people either. You couldn't get fired as easily even if you didn't do shit on your job. Sure there was a propaganda even in schools and universities, but honestly? Common people ignored it or found it pretty silly. It's not like people were punished for that or something.

@@brushbust9644 I don't mind cartoons that actually make something of their LGBTQ characters (Steven universe being a good example of actual character and personality), but you don't see that type of content that much anymore. The older cartoons didn't give a crap. People could think for themselves what's just fiction and what's actual reality. Most LGBTQ/race focused cartoons focus merely on that topic alone, and anything and anyone who have slightly differing opinions are branded the enemy automatically. It's absolutely ridiculous. So I suggest you ask questions about my thoughts before you make assumptions, if you're open minded enough for that, that is.

No one I see mentioned it but I absolutely love the use of medal of honors soundtrack for this video. Absolutely perfect for the intro

Okay, so I actually watched all of Squirrel and Hedgehog. No, not because of Lt. Vixen, but because I was legitimately curious how N-Koreans do propaganda for children. And I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised, the cartoon is actually pretty damn good with an *ACTUAL PLOT* and lots of interesting characters with their own unique personalities (Mulmangcho is my absolute favorite). The propaganda part isn't even that obvious unless you remind yourself every two seconds which animals are supposed to represent which nations. I recommend everyone to give this one a try!

In my History of Animation class, we had a class or two on propaganda cartoons, especially during WWII, and we watched a lot of the ones you mentioned, but I think the short that really freaked me out the most was Peace on Earth *shutters*

That's true. Especially the cartoons back in the theater days. The cartoons were made by adults, although they did aim it so that anyone of any age could watch it. But they would have quite the number of adult things that kids these days shouldn't be looking at. Out of all the studios, I would say that Disney Shorts were more kid friendly, as Walt Disney made Mickey Mouse (Mischivious yes, but) more innocent then what you would see from Daffy Duck in Looney Tunes. The propaganda cartoons were specifically aimed for adults or those who are old enough to do what they can do for their country, from scrap to War Bonds. Its hard to really determined when they started to make cartoons much more Kid Friendly (Before cartoons REALLLLYYY Got kid friendly or had a Rating System). It could be the later days of the Theater days, it could've started during the birth of TV shows, such as The Bugs Bunny Show or Mickey Mouse's Clubhouse.

From a historical point, it's fascinating to see her w things have changed, and reminds us how far we have come. The glory days of animation, the references and the time. Its all relitive to their time. Thankfully (hopefully) things like this will soon become a true thing of the past.

I completely forgot about that all stars animation until this video, they showed it in my grade school.

Story time: The area in Italy where I’m from was a very poor region in the past, and because of this, lots of people immigrated to the USA before WWII. When the American troops landed on the Sicilian beaches, and they marched through the towns, many of the soldiers were reunited with family members they hadn’t seen in years. One of my relatives said that the American soldiers were given a parade in some of the cities as most people disliked the Italian leaders. I’ve seen pictures of this, and honestly, it’s kind of funny.

One last thing: I still to this day remember the rollercoaster scene w/baby kermit and piggy: "the higher the up, the lower the down". So, something stuck....

"Oh wait,we need that for Vodka."

It's hard to believe Disney was in such bad shape in the early '40s. During that time they also took a State Department funded "goodwill tour" to South America in 1941, where they visited with South American leaders and reminded them how the US was their friend (most everyone thought the war would reach the Americas eventually.) Disney brought his best artists and ended up making a film called Saludos Amigos, which is now most famous for creating the character of Joe Carioca, a personal favorite of mine.

Daniel Graham I don't think discussing politics with a stranger in a youtube comments section is an effective use of our time, but I will say that if you can dislodge yourself from your political bias and look through some diverse sources of information regarding the alt right you might see that it's not some evil amalgamation of boogeymen hell-bent on destroying the whole universe.

So fun fact, my mama came from Russia to America after the fall of the USSR, so I'm the first generation born here. I grew up with all those cartoons not bc my mama wanted me to be communistic (she HATED the CP) but bc not only did she want me to learn the language, but also to learn about the history of my heritage. First of all, I can assure you that the quality of the sound is par for the course with those old cartoons lol. You put up with it. Second, the millionaire was one of my favorites growing up. Mostly because that's what my mama grew up with. It's good to be aware of it's propaganda and history but to not fall for it. Honestly you could easily watch a TON of those old cartoons they were kinda great, and the animation quality was honestly rlly good.

Am I the only one who thinks that The millionaire is not about how money can corrupt a person but about how if you have the money you don't need to be any smart, or hard-working, or do anything - you can be a stupid dog. The idea came from a novel "Heart of A dog". Interestingly the novel itself was actually anti-soviet.

It doesn’t not bother me at all, I find those cartoon stereotypes awesome. What I was obsessed with are Joe Jitsu and Go-Go Gomez from the Dick Tracy Show. Before I’ve watched the banned cartoons, I was shocked into finding how crazy they are, because I didn’t want to laugh before everyone gets mad at me, but now, I got use to them.

If goofy was the angry mustache model in that meme: I WILL DO IT AGEN.
