That dodgy stack is a radon gas pipe

5:38 That looks to me like a pipe used to vent radon gas. Radon gas is a thing here in British Columbia, Canada, Im not sure if it is in the UK.

at 5:27, that's Radon venting. The pipe will go through a slab floor and then an active vent fan in the pipe to reduce radon levels. I just saw one in a customer house last week.
