Also Slash is only relevant to boomers who buy up anything with his name on it. Here’s a shitty les Paul that weighs 75 lbs with slashes name on it Boom sold.. @@GearGasms So many here don't get the gist of the difference between "overrated as a guitar player" and "this guy sucks". To think someone is overrated and to dislike someone are of course two different things. I say this loud: Edge is an outstanding musician and guitar player! His sound and his playing are unique, always absolutely song oriented. U2 consist of a singer, a rhythm section and The Edge. This guy's like a perfect "filler". Ultimately, it's ridiculous that anyone should feel the need to defend The Edge. Utterly ridiculous. This man is so big and so important for so many of my generation. Of course he himself would stand above all the ramblings here, he wouldn't even smile tiredly, he wouldn't bother with that crap at all. Sorry, but there is so much bullshit written here. As I said, so many didn't understand the actual subject of the video. But, Alan, you provoked this. It was to be expected that this would sometimes degenerate into stupid bashing. Too many are simple minded and intolerant. And maybe frustrated because they can't get anything done themselves. (Too bad I can't write here in my mother tongue to express myself more eloquently)

People also confuse technical ability with true musicianship. There is a huge difference between these, and it is why say certain 15 year old piano “prodigies” do not have prolific classical careers. Other pianists catch up on the skill level but “feel” takes inborn abilities and emotional maturity. Musicianship, or in more vague words *feel,* is a gift - see David Gilmour vs say Vai who is not pleasant to listen to over time as technical running through scales and no interesting phrasing of lines gets boring very quickly. Gilmour’s feel and use of bends to express EMPTION NOT JUST SKILL is absolutely amazing.

I get the point for Hendrix for those who care about technics and tightness. I mean he could not play chicken country style or Van Halen Satriani tap guitar virtuosity, but the guy invented new sounds , new ways of thinking and playing rock, composed great songs and mastered and improved most guitar effect. He is more than a guitarist but an influencial musician like Miles Davies on trumpet. He revolutionized the instrument. How can he be overrated when he changed guitar rock and rock music in 4 years dying at 27. Like Django Reinhardt, Doc Watson , Les Paul, Chet Atkin… There is guitar before them, and guitar after them. They changed something. The man realesed three bombs between 67 and 68, with Are you experienced, Axis Bold as love and Electric Ladyland, and reinvented what rock guitar presence on stage with the use of feedback, burning guitar, and use it guitar as machine gun at Woodstock . Don t tell he needs to tune his guitar while he tortures it and make it scream. You want nice and beauty, you ll find it on Little wing, Wind cries Mary, Castle made of sand, Axis Bold as love and more.

@Vincent Mileto Great point Vincent. Here's a guy wearing an Ace Frehley t-shirt talking shit about Hendrix(??) Santana and Eric Clapton. Sure, Since the Cream years he's been kind of in the pop music mode. However, he advertises himself as a master of the Blues. 461 Ocean Blvd, covers I Shot the Sherriff, covers of Cocaine, After Midnight, both originally written and performed by J J Cale, Living on Tulsa Time, written and performed by Danny Flowers, my preferred version was by Don Williams. Although, a few of.the aforementioned songs were pretty good in EC's hands. As far (the legendary) Kiss goes, saw them when I was 14 years old, very entertaining. A friend gave me a copy of Kiss (1974), prior to that particular show. Then came Hotter than Hell and Dressed to Kill. Anyway, after that, moving on to age 15, I personally had enough of Kiss. Repetitious and boring........

Hendrix took so many risks with his music and performances; that is what a trailblazer does. Beck and Gibbons (and I will mention SRV as well) all traced their success back to Jimi for being the trailblazer. Many of the late 60s British guitarists saw his early live performances and knew they were witnessing the future. 40+ years later rock guitar is still working on perfecting what Jimi started.

@@sonykroket it was Hendrix' presence, his confidence, he was playing in a tradition of blues guitarists. All that behind the back and playing with his teeth and stuff were old tricks. He pulled it off with so much style. For my money Robert Johnson and Elmore James and Lonnie Johnson were the real s***, but I love Hendrix for the freedom and the rawness. He was a perfect blues man for his time. And Castles Made of Sand is one of my all time favorite songs. I really think the bass player and drummer, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, I think? Were a big part of his sound. I think he named his band what he intended it to be. And there's no denying it was an experience.

Jack is a great artist, Jack is a guitar artist, therefore Jack is a great guitarist. The same is true for the Edge. Jack was described as a blow torch, and that's true for as far as it goes. But that is not what makes him great, that's like saying van Gogh was a dull knife compared to a fine paint brush. Pay attention to the value of the art. The rest is superfluous babble. A guitarist, just like a writer, needs a minimum vocabulary. Great guitarists, like great writers produce great works. It does not matter how many words they know or how many notes they can play.

I strive everyday to improve my technicality so I can play like Steve vai or Joe but I cant listen to either of them for more the half an hour without feeling like I'm dragging my face across a cheese grater. On the other hand, I had a pretty good grasp of David Gilmours bending by the time I was 15 and In my opinion it is the basic Simplicity of what he does that makes it what it is.

I think that's a lot of it. I don't care all that much for Satrioni's or Vai's style of music, just like Hendrix's, but I can recognize that they are incredibly talented guitarists who could play to perfection any genre they choose. Heavy metal probably has the best players ever, but it doesn't speak to my soul. I'm much more moved by B.B. King's one pure note, hanging and evolving, than by Joe's four dozen perfectly played notes over the same interval. We just have to recognize that our preferences are just that, and not indicative of relative talent.

What must be noted is the huge distinction between a musician’s pure technical ability on the instrument and more holistically, everything they do to create amazing songs and integrate into a legendary band. Nearly all of our 60s and 70s guitar heroes were rank beginners relative to the virtuosos of the last 30 years but their songwriting and emotion and style and vibe and what they make you feel could never be overrated. That’s tangible and real and eternal.

thrystero. Jimi Hendrix is talented but he is extremely overrated. Just like he mentioned in the beginning overrated doesn’t mean bad it just means that people blow their skill as a guitarist way over their actual skill. Jimi Hendrix should definitely not be viewed as the greatest Guitarist of all time. Maybe one of the greatest but to call him better than Van Halen hell no. Jimi Hendrix influence as a guitarist player blows every other guitar player out of the water. If a different guitar player influenced you to play guitar no doubt they were inspired by Hendrix. He also played the guitar in many unique and impressive ways. But when it comes to actually playing? He was pretty basic and some people who aren’t blind fanboys considered him sloppy.

Great vid. Hard to argue with any of those, perhaps with the exception of Hendrix - had his limitations for sure, but given he was plying his trade when we were still listening to the likes of The Kinks (in The UK) he was light years ahead of the game. However, when you consider those on your list against the likes of Carlton, Ford, Lukather, Blackmore, etc, its those guys that take the plaudits.

There's a difference between "musicians who play the guitar" and "guitar players." If the yardstick is shredding, then Chuck Berry, John Lennon, George Harrison, Keith Richards, Pete Townsend, David Gilmour, Kurt Cobain, the guys in Radiohead, etc, etc, are "over-rated." I think the idea of "good guitarist= finger gymnast" is relatively new (ie, post-EVH). In reality, music is an art form, and the guitar is a paintbrush. If you say a poem really fast, it doesn't make it better. To each his own.

I get so tired of hearing the same old excuses why fast players are sub par or a different kind of musician. You guys say speed doesn't mean anything and at the same time make a preposterous distinction like that. Another guy wrote its better to know where your going than running around in circles. Really??? Another ridiculous analogy. Yes you can get a 13 year old that just started playing and just moves his fingers really fast all over the place not knowing what they are doing. That was me a long time ago. You cant say that about seasoned artists like Yngwie, Michael Romeo, Luca Turrili. These guys clearly know what they are doing. And because it isn't the same old unimaginative regurgitated boxed in playing. Pentatonics and cowboy chords, doesn't somehow make them out to be less musicians. Heres an obvious analogy. Anyone can play Berry, Lennon, Harris, Richards, Townsend and Gilmour. But lets see them play EVH, SRV or Yngwie. They couldn't do it if it depended on their lives. So yes there is definitely a difference but you guys got it backwards and its obviously only due to Sour grapes. Ive yet to hear a reasonable excuse to put down the more advanced players. It takes more skill to run than to walk. How can anyone argue that. Everyone knows when your learning any musical instrument you start off slow and build it. It won't work any other way. I don't need to make up irrelevant apples and orange analogies. I can just say it how it is. But you guys with your nostalgic attachments praise those who crawl. If you dont like fast paced more exciting music that's just personal preference. Personally slow music bores me to tears, and music is neither all about math like another kind of clueless critic would argue. So stop trying to think up excuses why what you prefer is somehow better. Look, I used to rag on Angus Young because he's an easy target right. 3 chords and a heart attack. But when all he did his whole life was play guitar, theres no way he's an amateur. Doesn't matter the style or speed. You just build an unimaginable control and intuition. Theres simply no way around it. Its like they say about B.B. King, that Fucker can play one note all night, but no one can do it like him. And thats a quote directly from Yngwie, who plays with way more feeling than people care to admit. Its the same old BS, just because you aren't bending and vibrating slow notes all night, suddenly you have no feeling. It may be a different kind of feeling and definitely harder to pull off than playing slow. Adding spaces to buy time and think of what to do next. But it takes a hella of a lot of feeling to shred up and down the fretboard at will and keep it sounding fresh. And evens seamlessly incorporating different techniques to boot. And feeling is the only thing that can do that. You guys assume they just memorize scales and play them backwards and forwards. Like I said, everyones a critic but most of them are clueless what they are talking about. Heres a stupid analogy you might be able to relate to. The weight lifter that can lift the most weight is clearly the winner. But you would argue, oh anyone can lift a lot of weight, those guys are just a bunch of flashy show offs. Its the guys who cant lift a lot that are the real heroes LOL Ridiculous. Like I said, the proofs in the pudding. Yngwie can play anything and anyone, but few can play Yngwie, even Joe Satriani admitted in great disappointment, I stood and watched exactly what he was doing. I couldn't possibly be closer and see everything. But yet Satriani still couldn't play it. Thats pure feel. When you ask Yngwie what picking technique he uses to play a certain passage he says I dont know, has to stop and analyze it for himself before giving an answer. Thats called being in the zone, he just internalizes everything and brings it to the surface, that's called playing from the heart not the mind, not being conscious of it. And it takes a lifetime to develop, in fact its always in a state of development. And you cant say the speed of a player can ever hinder that natural progression. Its sheer absurdity. Hers yet another way Debunk the whole Shred myth. Practice makes perfect, it doesn't matter the style or technique, saying someone is less a musician because they can play fast is the same as blaming any other aspect like bending or vibrato. But if I were to say that, ah man he sucks, all he does is bend and vibrato everything people would think Im crazy. Yet somehow if you say it about faster players somehow it makes sense. No, what happened is people like EVH, SRV and YJM came along and made everyone before them look stupid and the Idolaters were butthurt and angry and had to make something up to compensate for it. Sorry Charlie, thats just evolution, there will always be someone better that comes along, ALWAYS. And thank God for that or life would become really stale. and western adage states "Be never afraid of change, be only afraid of standing still." So true. But you numbskulls wont only hate instead of praise the innovators, you'll invent the absolute worst excuses for hating an artist. Its Art not a sport for Fucks sake. I can go on but what's the point. Its always been like this. When Hendrix first came out all the old Blues Players accused him of bastardizing the art. But long after humans built their emotional attachments Jimi's made out to be the greatest ever. That can never happen, there will always be someone that puts in more time to learn how to do it better. Jason Becker would even take his guitar with him to the dinner table. Today he is a vegetable but still composes music. And he was one of the original shredders. Whats Richards known for? Drugs and Orgies, fuck that guy and all the decedent Rock stars. They got the free ride and prove it by they're minimalistic approach to music. In the words of Yngwie, how can less be more, more is more. Duh! I couldn't say it better. And one last thing about Yngwie. He was gonna come out playing Blues, and does it exceptionally well, but thought everyones doing that, so he fucking invented an entirely new genre of music instead, and literally did everything himself. All the writing all the decisions. And youre gonna compare Townsend and Richards to that who couldnt even play a guitar solo if you payed them. OMFG where do they grow you people? They say repetition justifies, say something enough times and the parrots will start repeating it. "Speed isn't everything." Bunch of no talent lamos who refuse to change with the times. Thats ok, the times will change just the same without you

Jazz and classical are so underrated by many dyed-in-the-wool Rock players, however serious metal players have a huge collection of classical music and they're listening archives. Also it's good to have a master instrument but it's also good to be able to at least play piano and sing. Learning how to play saxophone and trumpet can help your phrasing. I think most Rock and metal guitarists are highly overrated.

Jimi's genius wasn't his technical mastery of the guitar, it was the way that he was able to express his emotions through the guitar. The guitar was an extension if his soul, and his music was an expression of how/what he was feeling. And nobody else could emote through the guitar as beautifully as Jimi could. Which is why so many people have him on their short list of Guitar GOATs.

Yea Kirk loves his Whawha peddle and Slash is a pentatonic melodic jamming machine. I respect your opinion and I enjoyed your video. I believe that if a musician creates music people love and is able to keep it up for decades they have all my respect. Since each great guitar player interprets music from their soul and that's what comes out when they play. That's why 3 notes you can tell what guitar player it is. To close I'd like to bitch since Eddie Van Halen hoarded tap soloing now nobody else can do it without being accused of copying him. Lol you know what I'm talking about😂

Well I was expecting some really awful clip of Hendrix to make your case. Instead it's something outer worldly that no one 50 years later can pull off.

Exactly. There’s legitimate mediocre recordings of Hendrix but he pulls a clip from one of his all time best sets.

You took two TOP 3 guitarists and made them bottom 3. I agree with you that Hendrix was frequently out of tune, but he was savage on the neck and with the technology of the day it would be hard to stay in tune, but when you put Jimi in the context of his time, he was truly unique and gifted. I saw him 3 times live. Compared to his contemporaries, he was from another planet and forced other guitar players to reconsider their self imposed boundaries. I think if Jimi had lived, he may have become less significant. His eclectic explorings at the end of his life were unlistenable. You cannot come down on Clapton so hard because you hate one song. Once again, putting him in the context of his time, he was exceptional. He was in a league of three. Clapton, Page, and Beck. Before people try to dispute this, you need to look at their popularity as studio musicians (producers faves), and guest stars on other's songs (musicians faves). Clapton, despite decades of self sabotage, has a catalog most impressive for a guitarist. He arguably may not be the best, but he can't go below #3. I agree with your other choices and would add several others, but your inclusion of these two is silly. BTW your credibility is strained by all the KISS paraphernalia in the background!😊

You cannot be the greatest guitar players of all time if you need to be only considered in the context of the time you were in. That little proviso disqualifies them from the title of "All time best" Hendrix & Clapton & Gilmour weren't "better" than Vai & Yngwie & Govan....they were only relatively great...FOR THE TIME.

Ok, let's get to this....Guitarists like Clapton and Santana were indeed great for their time. What you seem to think is that they should have changed ( or "progressed" ) their playing with the new decades. Most gutarists ( not all ), play how they play...especially blues players...until they die. Going by your measures, then BB King should also be on this list.

I always thought the best thing Joe Perry ever played was the lead stuff in "Train Kept A Rollin'" until it came out that HE DIDN'T PLAY IT " it was actually Steve Hunter (studio guitarist/Alice Cooper) that played those badass guitar parts 😬😳🙄 it was mind blowing to learn that 🤯
