    Leicester winning the premier league was the single biggest shock in sports. They were something like 5000 to 1 to win it at the start of the season, it was impossible, yet it happend.

    So I’m American who’s trying to understand European soccer more and I’m more costumed to American sports norms that make leagues more balanced (I.e the draft/salary caps) and I can’t help that when I see a team like Leicester, who wasn’t even seen as the worst team in the league that season, have odds like that I wonder why it’s enjoyable being fans of clubs outside of the big market teams and even pay attention at all to the league/sport in general. This is not meant to be a jab at all because clearly the system in European soccer is successful as all hell but i just want to know the appeal when it comes to that system.

    @@user-nj5pd4ms6x Every team is always chasing the dream. That’s one of the big appeals. There’s also a serious element of unpredictability in football that you don’t have in Gridiron/other sports. Teams like Burnley, who are very low budget, compete with different strategies and do win plenty of games. Football fans generally support the team where they are from blindly, and love when “their” town competes with the bigger teams and chases the dream of trophies.

  • @user-nj5pd4ms6x

    @@ccf3294 Okay I understand... but doesn't that seem like only a dream? Looking at the premier league results it seems like Leister is the only team in the 2000s that is a "small market" club that has won it and people consider that a miracle. So is the goal for supporters of small market clubs like Burnley not necessarily winning the league, but rather win a decent amount of games and pull off a few upsets here and there? It would seem like if I was a fan of Burnley I would never realistically have aspirations of the team winning the league.

  • @ccf3294

    @ccf3294

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@user-nj5pd4ms6x The goal for supporters is to see their team compete with the “big boys” and the realistic goal is to break into the “top tier of teams”. West Ham and Leicester have both broken the Hierarchy this season, as well as the falloff of down the table Arsenal. Teams chase the spots 2-7 in order to play European football, which is a magical experience. Getting 7th is a more realistic target for teams like Burnley - they achieved it in 2017. Pulling off upsets and competing against the big boys is entertaining for the fans, as well as Watching their team fighting European matches. Some former “small market” clubs have broken into the Hierarchy. Man City and Spurs were small market in the 2000s before breaking into the Hierarchy at the top. Fans really do dream - it can come true. To answer your question - yes, winning the league is not necessarily the goal, but watching great football and great games is the real attraction for these fans.

    I think you overlooked the sport of Rugby. The 1995 World Cup final between South Africa and New Zealand. The reason I find this to be a special event is because South Africa was banned from participating in the sport due to Apartheid missing more than 10 years of international rugby while New Zealand was the best team in the world and had a stacked team that included the legendary Jonah Lomu who steamrolled every opponent they faced and were expected to win, only for South Africa to win the game in the final moments with a long range kick.... The crux of all of this is, the victory united a country when the people needed it most.

If you don't want to cover those other sports, that is fine; but, don't mislead viewers in what you are offering. Cricket is the second most popular sport in the WORLD with over 2.5 billion fans.
