The value all depends on where you are in the world. Teak, African mohogany, black walnut, etc are by far the most expensive in my area of the northwest US. Red cedar grows and ash grow on my property so it's cheap.

The most expensive wood belongs to aqularia tree suspected to be capable of producing resin called kynam/kyara. The wood is priced at an average $500 dollars per gram. Again, PER GRAM. Even expensive and rarer that any gymstone like pink diamond or any mineral like platinum. The biggest recorded finding of this wood is 16 kilogram which was bought in an auction for over $30 million. Agarwood which is also belong to aquilaria tree capable of producing a normal resin is priced at $15.00 per gram. Again, PER GRAM. So akilo of it would reach $15,000. This is just an average price because a good quality of agarwood can fetch up to $100,000 per kilo. Thank me later!

In Thailand, teak, rosewood and maka are illegal to harvest without a permit. penalty: 1 year in prison. I was there and bought some old rosewood slabs that had been used by hill tribers for walking planks set upon muddy trails. I bought 4, each was 2" thick, 5' long and about 17" wide (variable). I used two to make a beautiful table. Up to 22 growth rings per inch. I also planted dozens of rosewood and maka seedlings in northern Thailand.

You stated that Dalbergia wood is the most expensive in the world, but African Blackwood's scientific name is Dalbergia Melanoxylon (part of the dalbergia Family). And I'm also surprised that Combretum Imberbe isn't on this list as it is a tree that takes 400-800 years to mature properly before the wood can be harvested.

Most of these woods do not come from sustainable sources and contribute to the cutting down of both the Amazon and African jungles and highlands. If you buy any of these woods you might as well saw down a 500-year-old tree that the Amazon relies on. There's lots of alternatives which might not be as cool but are a hell of a lot better for our forest and forest life. A fair share of them are illegal to import into the United States. Boy they sure are pretty but the price paid is much higher than the dollar value. If you want to be cool Don't use them if you want to be a fool live it up.

Well if you live near the Amazons or live in Africa, then you have no choice but to cut down these trees, you can't expect them to import walnut and birch wood from the more developed countries. But if you from the developed countries were to buy these woods, then I agree that would be a sinful act, and supporting the extinction of the local fauna.

@@limitlesssky3050 i agree Limit. We abused and destroyed our flora and fauna hundreds of years ago but now we want to hold developing countries and the poor of those countries responsible for the worlds climate problems. Part of the problem is that it isn't those most in need who benefit from Brazilian gold mining and logging, it benefits those who are already wealthy and have the ability to grease the palms of the politicians. Slash and burning to grow avocados might give the poor some short term benefits but thats all. If we don't want third world or developing countries cut down their Forests and harvest minerals then we have to pay them and that just means giving the politicians more money and not the populace.

Good afternoon... I respect all opinion here as i usually do... I' m 82 years old and a carpenter by profession... Of all the woods that i encounter during my 60 years of working on woods, i consider the snake wood or better known as iron wood (mankono) of the Philipines as the most expensive and hardest wood maybe because of its rarity and hardness... we use for fabrication of bearing for sea going boats ..

I guess this dope has never heard of snakewood. They age that stuff for 10 years before sale. It is hands down the most expensive wood in the world per board foot and is king among even the exotic wood types. Way to fail bro.

Snakewood is indeed expensive. But as someone who makes musical instrument bows of several woods including snakewood, I can tell you that it's not as expensive nowadays as high quality pernambuco. A good blank for a violin bow, a stick about 1/2" by 1" by 30", can cost several hundred dollars.
