Fascinating video. I note your reference to a 'board foot'. Here in Australia the unit is a 'super foot' which is exactly the same thing. Having said that, since the introduction of the metric system about 45 years ago this unit has disappeared. Our official unit is cubic meters which is obviously extremely large and as such timber is usually referred to in lineal meters of a particular size.

Helpful list of expensive woods. As a wood hobbyist and collector I would add that there is no upper limit. Your list refers to relatively common, expensive woods that can be purchased with ease. Bottom line more rare = more expensive. Things like Lignum vitae (Genuine not Argentinian), Brazilian Rosewood, Bois de Rose, Cocuswood, Camatillo will cost way more.

  • @progressiveideasinwood6077

there is no upper list in what a particular person might pay,or what a particular dealer may charge.but lignum vitae is FAR less expensive than anything on the list.&Brazilian rosewood is expensive. but it is not $100.00 bf or more. it's around $70-85 bf. I developed this list so people wouldn't pay an exorbitant price to already expensive woods.if you are paying more.i encourage you to shop around. & I'm ambiguous on the others you mentioned. just haven't came across them. thanks for tuning in &sharing.

My father was a very skilled man, he was a Carpenter/Joiner, thatched roofs, was a cooper and wheelwright and worked for a time in Harland and Wolf's shipyards in Belfast. He had a block of Lignum Vitae and said to me that if I could make something from it, I might have some potential! Damn that wood was hard! I never did make anything from it. I use ebony for detail and accent. Many years ago, I was getting it at a great price. I could get a box of pieces around 3 or 4 inches wide, about a quarter of an inch thick and varying in length from 4 to 7 inches. Well seasoned, very stable, very black and just the right size for the stuff I was making. And cheap. I never calculated the board-foot price, but I think I was paying $25 for a ten pound box, so it was cheap. These were the end cuts from fingerboards from a guitar manufacturer. I knew it was a great deal but I only bought it as I needed it, thinking it would always be there. Alas, it was not to be. I wish I had stockpiled it. That was 30 years ago. I occasionally still run into some pieces in my shop now and then.

an honorable mention would be Phoebe zhennan. it grows mostly in china. anything timber sized would go for millions of dollars per board foot. but it is impossible to get. smaller pieces that are good for beads are way cheaper, but still in the thousands if not tens of thousands per board foot range. it has a stunning golden fiddleback patten. it used to be considered a "royalty only" wood in ancient china as well. i was told most of the Phoebe zhennan that are larger than 1m in diameter are guarded by the chinese military out of fear of poaching

I know that there can always be some special boards from certain trees like pomele figure, or burls etc that are very expensive.
