@@oscarmaidana9294 Exactly, Bernard Lagat was the biggest threat for him, but there was a simple trick he applied at the 2008 Olympic Games. He made the pace when 5 laps where left and made quite fast laps, so that the others couldn't hang on and he won it.

Jo An yeah. Funny to say it, on 2009 in Berlins 5k, Bekele let Kipchogue, Lagat and others be on his side once the final lap bell rang. Even when Bekele won that day, it was really close.

I know a list like this is incredibly difficult to make, but I think Bekele deserves more than an honorable mention. Dominated the 5k and 10k for several years a with lots of gold medals and world records, and his dominance in cross country was unreal as well. He might not be as dominant on the roads, but still holds one of the fastest marathon times ever. If Edwin Moses is on this list, then Eliud Kipchoge deserves to be right the with him for his unbelievable dominance in the marathon. Obviously the marathon just doesn’t allow for someone to rack up a 100+ consecutive win streak like Moses had, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive.

Yes, a list like this was very much a challenge. And for me, I had to make a judgement call between Haile Gebrselassie and Bekele for "Ethiopian male distance runner" entry. Ultimately, I chose Geb because of his world record breakthroughs, and I certainly did want to add Kenenisa to this list, but I kind of just ran out of room. Part of me wanted to make a "Top 20 list" but that would be like a 30 minute video. And as far as Eliud Kipchoge, I didn't add him because I was debating on whether or not the marathon was actually a track event or not. Also, while he was on the track back before 2012, he did have plenty of losses so I took that into consideration as well. In the conversation of greatest marathoner ever, yea he wins by a landslide. This list is certainly far from perfect, and I'm happy to see comments like yours! Thanks for the comment! Good luck with marathon training!

Completely agree. Bekele defined and advanced track and field in the twilight of the Gebrselassie era and then steadfastly for a decade. The guy was basically an indomitable machine in both track and cross country. His 10 consecutive victories in long and short cross country alone should put him on this list, without even counting the two insane (and still unmatched) world records at 5,000 and 10,000. I think Bekele eclipsed Haile as the Ethiopian greatest when he proved his prowess in the marathon. Their PRs aren't even close, Bekele is almost a minute faster! I love Haile as a runner, but I think Bekele was simply more dominant across all races. Perhaps Tirunesh needs honorable mention instead, she was frequently beaten by Meseret Defar in the 5000, and didn't have anywhere near Bekele's versatility in other distances.

Zelezny's record is over 20 years old and he owns 5 of top 6 throws ever (i.e., for latest rules). His record is 4.3% better than the next best individual (not counting himself). 4.3% slower than Bolt's record is a 10 second 100 m, and a 3:51 mile. Both rather pedestrian times beaten by many individuals. He at least deseves an asterisk in this video (if only due to the highly technical nature of and limited participation in this event).

"...winning 116 consecutive meets in the shot put." Parry O'Brien was able to break the world record in the shot put 17 times, becoming the first man to put the 16-pound shot more than 60 feet, and winning 116 consecutive meets in the shot put. This method became known as "O'Brien Style" or the "O'Brien Glide." He held the world record from 1953 to 1959.[5] During his career he won 18 Amateur Athletic Union championships (combined outdoor and indoor), 17 in the shot put, plus one in the discus. He won nine consecutive national indoor shot put championships, and he won eight overall outdoors, including five in a row.

You seem to have overlooked gthe woman who was votges greates female athlete of the 20th century: "Francina "Fanny" Elsje Blankers-Koen (26 April 1918 - 25 January 2004) was a Dutch track and field athlete, best known for winning four gold medals at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. She competed there as a 30-year-old mother of two, earning her the nickname "the flying housewife", and was the most successful athlete at the event. Having started competing in athletics in 1935, she took part in the 1936 Summer Olympics a year later. Although international competition was stopped by World War II, Blankers-Koen set several world records during that period, in events as diverse as the long jump, the high jump, and sprint and hurdling events. Apart from her four Olympic titles, she won five European titles and 58 Dutch championships, and set or tied 12 world records - the last, pentathlon, in 1951 aged 33. She retired from athletics in 1955, after which she became captain of the Dutch female track and field team. In 1999, she was voted "Female Athlete of the Century" by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Her Olympic victories are credited with helping to eliminate the belief that age and motherhood were barriers to success in women's sport." (Wikipeida)

Here are some dominant athletes you forgot to mention...(1) Iolanda Balas of Romania (Women's High Jump) - Undefeated between 1957 and 1967 (154 consecutive competitions). 2 times Olympic Champion in 1960 and 1964, 2 times European Champion in 1958 and 1962. In her era, the European Championships were more or less the equivalent of the World Championships. The only non-European world power in women's track at that time was the U.S. And there was no credible U.S. female top tier high jumper in that era. She also set 14 world records. I'm disappointed you failed to mention her. She's easily in the top 3.(2)Viktor Saneyev of the Soviet Union (Men's Triple Jump):- 3 times Olympic Champion (1968, 1972 and 1976), narrowly missed winning gold in 1980 (won silver). 2 times European Champion (1969 and 1974), also set multiple world records

You cannot leave out Herb Elliot that great Australian miler/1500 metre athlete. He ran in the middle to late 1950's and won the Gold in the 1960 Olympic 1500 mtrs.I n a mile race in Dublin (?) He lowered the mile record by 3 seconds from 3:57 to 3:54.He was never beaten over 1 mile or 1500 metres. He had achieved everything by the time he was 22 years of age and promptly retired.I have heard some (though not all) experts reckon that if all the world milers met each other in a time machine driven mile Herb Elliot would win.By the way he used to start his "kick" at the end of the third lap and wind it up inexorably to the finish. He is still with us and a very interesting man to listen to.

Bekele would have been a double double champion was it not for another multiple world record holder in Hicham El Gerrouj who beat him over the 5000 in Sydney 2004. He was unbeaten over 10,000 for 8 years and was quite frankly unbeatable during that time (just ask Eliud Kipchoge and Zerzene Tadese). Both he and El Gourrouj deserve to be on this list evidenced by the fact they both still own 2 world records each. Kipchoge must be close too being totally dominant in the toughest race of all. - Ritchie New Zealand

Carl Lewis and Edwin Moses ranked over Ussain Bolt? Come on man, you must be a gringo! The events at wich Bolt was so incredibly dominant are probably the most difficult in track and field events! The amount of athletes who train for the 400 mts. hurdles are probably less than 1/10th of those who try the dash sprints! What Bolt did was not only incredible, it was impossible and yet he did it.

Where is Jan Zelezny? After the honorable mentions, I was certain he was going to be #1. If look at the all-time top throws in the men's javelin, he has the top 4 throws, and 6 of the top 10 throws, and the second best thrower is over 4 meters behind him. Imagine any other event if the #2 athlete was over 4% behind the WR: Michael Johnson's #2 400m time would be 44.87. Barshim's #2 high jump would be 2.35. Gebrselassie's #2 5k would be 13:10.

Carl Lewis was definitely more dominant than Bolt when you also consider his achievements in the long jump. Then when you add the sprints and relays, it's without question. Carl Lewis had four gold medals in a single Olympics (1984) four consecutive Olympic gold medals in the same event (Long Jump) as well as a plethora of World Titles ranging from 1983 to 1991.

Limited to 10, some dominant athletes will be left out. To dominate means to take on all comers, IMHO, which would eliminate Seb and Overt, for instance, but include Nurmi, Bolt, Bubka. Keino (many forget that he was world class from 800 to 10000 plus steeple) would be there and O Brien and Zelezny and Edwards. Oerter won NCAA and AAU titles and held the WR as well as the golds so he is there whereas Viren's awesome 5/10 in two games was not backed up by similar Euro CH results. Syedikh may have struck gold in L.A. to add just that much more luster to his career. Not Bikila's fault that several world class marathons were not held every year (Berlin, etc) but he won his first OG gold as a complete unknown and his second as the complete opposite and put on a demonstration that more than one learned observer considered, up to that time, the greatest performance in t&f history. I believe that is 10.
