An infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), also known as a mechanized infantry combat vehicle (MICV), is a type of armoured fighting vehicle used to carry infantry into battle and provide direct-fire support. The 1990 Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe defines an infantry fighting vehicle as "an armoured combat vehicle which is designed and equipped primarily to transport a combat infantry squad, and which is armed with an integral or organic cannon of at least 20 millimeters calibre and sometimes an antitank missile launcher". IFVs often serve both as the principal weapons system and as the mode of transport for a mechanized infantry unit.
Infantry fighting vehicles are distinct from armored personnel carriers (APCs), which are transport vehicles armed only for self-defense and not specifically engineered to fight on their own. IFVs are designed to be more mobile than tanks and are equipped with a rapid-firing autocannon or a large conventional gun; they may include side ports for infantrymen to fire their personal weapons while on board.
The IFV rapidly gained popularity with armies worldwide due to a demand for vehicles with higher firepower than APCs that were less expensive and easier to maintain than tanks. Nevertheless, it did not supersede the APC concept altogether, due to the latter's continued usefulness in specialized roles. Some armies continue to maintain fleets of both IFVs and APCs.

    @@tomeng9520 The KF41 is designed, from the start to be even more modular and customizable. And there are versions of the KF41 mounting the 50mm beast (check out the OMFV submission), and Rheinmetall has a long record of combat proven vehicles. And, cost for the KF41 is significantly less. Lynx is a better vehicle (by just a bit) at a much better cost (by quite a bit.) Soon, there may be two different IFVs in Poland, claiming to be the best in their class in the world. The light BORSUK IFV and the heavy PL-21 IFV based on the AS-21 REDBACK IFV. While Borsuk is already starting to be produced, PL-21 is being negotiated as to what it will look like as a final product. The Borsuk IFV was designed with the terrain in mind. More precisely, it is about overcoming various water sewage, which is why it is a light IFV. The PL-21, on the other hand, may consist of: 1) a chassis fitted with the K9 Thunder and AHS Krab cannon-howitzers. 2) ZSSW-30 unmanned turret ( Borsuk has one). 3) IronVision system. 4) IronFist system. 5) Topaz system. 6) the armor remains the same as on the Redback. 7) hybrid engine

    Why even mention CV90's first 1993 specs, when they are since long replaced w the latest stabilisers, optics & thermal imaging, even devices to mask appearance on the battlefield, such as the 'Ghost model' of CV90? Newer isn't always better, as we've seen w the Lynx/Puma, is what upgrades can provide for a good platform. And w 17 models of CV90, the swedes sure showed how it should be done.

    -Armor, armament, FCS and optronics can be replaced in an upgrade. -Base hull structure and layout can not. If build to the exact same specs a new clean sheet design will always outperform a upgraded legacy platform.

    @@jonny2954 Not necessarily; the whole hull, turret, has been changed between different models of CV90. The models can be rebuilt like Lego; front, sides, top and back, including turret (or no turret), tracks25-120mm gun with adapter chassi for it, and number of drivewheels. It's about as modular as a vehicle can get. I'm sure you want a jet turbine engine it could be done too.

  • @jonny2954

    @jonny2954

    @@opponenspericulo The nature of the base hull remained the same since the Mk I. The rear dismount compartment roof has been raised among other changes, however the thickness or material of the steel armor hull has not been changed to allow a better weight-protection ratio for the usage of addon composite armor. New clean sheet design armored vehicles use the steel hull mostly (or in some cases only) for structural purposes, the ballistic protection is provided by composite armor. Modern composite armor has a 4+ times higher weight efficency than steel against KE and more than 8+ times against shaped charges. By reducing the amount of steel and maximising the amount of composite armor in a passive protection concept weight-protection ratio is boosted significantly. For every 100 kg of steel saved there can be 100 kg of composite which has the ballistic protection performance of 400+ kg of steel (against KE, against SC it's 800+ kg of steel!). Disadvantage being higher cost and volume of course (the reason for more modern IFVs being so much bigger from the outside despite having similar internal volume). The latest CV90 Mk IV still uses a steel armor hull made of the same material and of the same thickness as the Mk I. There has been composite addon armor added on top, but due to the high weight of the hull it's not nearly as much as modern designs like the Lynx or Redback manage. The Puma as example takes that principle to a whole different level, more than half of its total combat weight is composite armor.

    @@zhufortheimpaler4041 You should really read about the Borsuk & Puma because you got no clue what ur writing about. Holy cow where to start... The Bursuk IFV is not 1 version but a modular plattform UMPG (Uniwersalna Modułowa Platforma Gąsienicowa) for example more composite armour can be fittet BUT doing so results in a 44t vehicle loosing its amphibious ablity. A Borsuk base model only weighs 28t. While the Puma protecton lvl A weighs 31,5t BTW 5 Borsuk have been build. The prototype test phase was completed in late 2022 & the Polish army was finally satisfied with the changes made. Thus the Polish goverment ordered this FEBRUARY 1400 Borsuk. While the German GOV is WAS planing to get max 350 Pumas in TOTAL. The Puma has a traditional Continuous track while the Bursuk is using a modern & lighter & much quieter CRT (Composite rubber track) Further more the Borsuk has a hard kill APS while the Puma has only a passive one. Thats a huge deal. Borsuk's main armarment is a Mk44 Bushmaster II, this cannon has higher firerate that Pumas MK 30-2/ABM even tho both use the exact same caliber. Both IFV use also the same Israeli Spike ATGM's. The Puma can only hold 200 rounds of cannon ammo in it turret & CANNOT be rearmed from within the Puma, this is another a fatal flaw. Because labour & materials are way cheaper in Poland the Borsuk cost 10 million USD & the Puma a wopping 17 million USD ( the most expensive IFV on this planet). Both have cameras instead of pericopes. The Pumas are infact so advanced that during the lastest Bundeswehr training exercise in 2022 ALL 18 Pumas broke down.... All further production of the Puma IFV thus have been halted. Now germany wants to pull out their phased out Marder IFV again... This was just another massive scandal in Germany & every body is blaming the other why it went so terribly wrong. I could go on & on but im tires of correcting people all the time for brabbling out nonsense.

    not really. puma´s readiiness problems primarily come from lack of proper high level maintenance. The Bundeswehr lost the majority of their own maintenance units and capability in 2010 with the MOD cutting these parts to save money in the Budget. Since then the bundeswehr struggles with readiness rates. 95% of issues with Puma are due to lack of maintenance and too high usage. The "famous" broken down 18 vehicles at the start of the year were used in heavy combat training for weeks without major maintenance and overhaul as part of the VJTF training and qualification prior to the relevant event.
