Just finished 86 - Eighty Six... damn that was a great one. First half of it was just so intense and the ending was just perfect. Big recommendation on that one.

Interesting list. But it certainly lacking real mecha gems like Getter Robo, Votoms, Blue Gender, Heroic Age, Escaflowne and Fafner Exodus.

List is trash. You ALWAYS start with the OG: Mazinger Z. This series is what codified the core of mecha anime as it we know it. Immediately following it is Getter Robo, which introduced Combiners and Transformers as mecha tropes as well as the team-focused mecha pilot cast, and capping the formation of classic mecha anime is UFO Grendizer. Mobile Suit Gundam--the original, and NEVER any of the successors--is what created the Super/Real Robot divide (which is based on Narrative Tropes, and NOT technology bases; Supers go on (super/culture)hero narrative models, while Reals focus on Military SF/Police Procedural/Technothriller narrative models). Follow that with the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross (the show that proved that Real Robots are commercially viable, as OG Gundam FAILED on TV), Armored Trooper VOTOMS (the most Mil-SF Technothriller Real Robot show), and then PATLABOR; you can add Appleseed, Bubblegum Crisis, and Ghost in the Shell as required for emphasis. Isekai gets early entries--Aura Battler Dunbine (a Real Robot show), Magic Knights Rayearth (Super Robot)--and outright fantasy appears MUCH later (Break Blade), while Gurren Lagann is a great show you're going to be better served watching its direct inspiration: King of Braves Gaogaigar. Once you have your grounding--which requires going back to _1973_--then you will be able to appreciate all that's come since.

One does not simply exclude the Holy Trinity in one for or another. Also one does not simply exclude a Brave, Tetsujin and for apocalyptic conclusion, Ideon. And how can we forget the the one who started it all. Tetsujin.

I agree on the fact that the video's list is the worse, but have you actually watched any of the Go Nagai's super-robot series? They're basically unwatchable as of today. It's not like og Gundam, clearly a visually very dated series but narratively still very interesting and entertaining, those shows are literally monster of the week series specifically made to sell toys to kids (Gundam was made for the same reason, but the way that played out was totally different). I can maybe save Getter Robot, but Mazinger and Grendinzer eeeeh (the Imagawa remakes are another pair of shoes, those are great)
