I've attended Super Bowls, World Cups, F1, college sports and this race was the most exciting sporting event I've ever attended. It was simply bizarre and unfathomable.

Little Al in 92 will always be my favorite. Especially with how close he’d been before.

I listened to this race on the radio sitting under a tree in a park in Austin Texas. Still me favorite moment ever in car racing. Al Jr was for a period of time the best race car driver on the planet bar none.

This was my favortite. Scott Goodyear was a beast at Indy. But little Al drove the wheels off that thing. I can't believe it got me emotional watching that again. Reminds me of going to F1 and CART races with my dad. Long Beach F1 in 1978 Ontario, Ca, 1975 Long Beach serveral times in the 90's. No wonder I became a automotive tech.

The Checkered Flag is out Goodyear makes a move, Little Al wins by just a few tenths of a second perhaps the closest finish in the history of the Indianapolis 500. RIP to the great Bob Jenkins on the greatest call in Indy history.

Still heartbroken that Michael never won the race. ABC Sports was experimenting with a camera above the yard of brick. Due to the checkered flag ABC didn’t get the shot of the finish live. So many legends never raced again after this race

Little Al was absolutely amazing that day. I swear I could at one point buy a collection of the radio broadcasts of these races. Anyone know if I still can? Also hearing Bob Jenkins on the call gets me all emotional, Bob really was fantastic no matter if it was for TV or radio, he was a,azing. Everyone (rightly) says Sid Collins and Paul Page were the voices of the 500 in that generation, but Jenks gets overlooked and deserves to be up there as the voice too

When I was a kid, I had his Nintendo game, so he was my favorite driver on account of that. Needless to say, when he won that race, I was over the moon!😃

You really wonder if Michael just pushed his car too hard with a 30 second lead wouldn't you want to ease off a little and save the engine just in case. I know that is Monday morning quarterbacking years later and hindsight is 20/20. It seemed like Al Sr. always was able to maximize his car so it wouldn't blowup and fail. Whereas Mario and Michael always seemed to be tripped up at Indy. Great finish to the race like Rick Mears and Gordon Johncock 10 years earlier.

This was my first 500 and we sat in turn 3. For most of the day it was a parade of cars under yellow it seemed, highlighted by 8 dramatic laps for the win. I’ll never forget this day, but had Michael not blown up it could very well be in the bottom 10 races of all time.

  • @adude8046

Completely Crashed filled. yellows like every 10-15 laps. Couldn';t get a consistent run of laps. Andretti would lap the field then a yellow than bunched up again then he would lap them again. The car was relatively faster than the others than any car I have seen there, Andretti was desperately trying to take care of the car. Unser and GoodYear were just 2 slow afterthoughts after Andretti went out and you were like yawn. then it became this multiple lap duel to the end that make it exciting.

Yeah I kind of got that as well kind of a messy race yellow city. Great finish but not a very smooth race. I feel bad for Michael but he won a ton of races just not the grand daddy of them all.

@@bartsullivan4866 in 1992 was Michael at the peak of his power on his way to an f1 seat with Senna. Can you even imagine that today? He was on his own lap all day. the yellows and the cold weather were not planned for I guess the constant slowing down and restarting must have broke something. He would just hit it on the restart and pulled out like 4 seconds by turn 2. It was stupid. He didn't put a wheel wrong. Andretti not many wins at 500 mile races in general. Gotta credit the Unsers as big Al who was like 50 by then could hang around in 4th and did everything, he could to force Andretti to break. That guy knows how to win a 500 mile race. After that epic 1989 battle AL Unser Jr was not going to be denied thankfully Scott Goodyear kept it interesting. I think the 1989 race belongs in the top 10 for sure.

This one I have to disagree with. Way to many crashes and yellows, the pole sitter spun on the parade lap, and the vastly dominant driver failed to win. It was not a good day for anyone but Al Jr.
