The second most famous words in racing are "And Andretti slows on the backstretch ". Mears is probably the best natural racecar drivers I have ever seen.

What a pass. This was a fantastic race. Who could have imagined that Rick would win 4 Indy's in 15 starts and then had to retire in January 1993 due to the foot injuries incurred back in the fall of 1984

If you compare the lead changes, you see that Michael had to chop down in front of Rick in the short chute, while Rick, on the subsequent lap made the pass without chopping down in front of Michael. This tells me that Rick had the better handling car at that moment. A couple months ago the IMS museum had Rick Mears as a guest speaker, and he discussed this in detail. It was fascinating to hear the details of the decisions he made in split seconds. These few laps alone make this one of my favorite 500's of all time.

He wasn't sandbagging he was saving his car so he could have it at the end. At every pit stop he would tweak his car it for the 10 to 20 laps.

@@thalleshoward3962 That's what sandbagging means. Rick had the speed all along as you saw on the first few laps. They intentionally gave a taste of what the car could do, then slacked off. You just heard Michael say that he was WIDE OPEN on the last few laps and Rick just kept pulling away. That shows that he had a superior machine. You also saw both he and Emo were right on his tale towards the end. If Emo had not of have had a bad clutch, he probably would have won. The 1991 PC-20 was a fine machine.

@@D2Kprime Rick Mears was the master of saving his car until the last twenty laps. He would make adjustments all day and leave to the end of the race. Absolutely my favorite.

Mears has 4 Indy wins, the Unser’s have 9. The Andretti’s have 1. When you consider the cheap move by Mario to try to help Michael win, it starts making sense that they only have the 1 win.

It’s the Indianapolis 500 you moron! They’ve been doing this “turning left” since 1911 and it’s one the races needed to win the Triple Crown. Hating what you don’t understand. Typical.

As an F1 fan, there's a reason most of the drivers don't want to do Indy. I'd love to see you try and do this.
