And Blue Cheer was the first with their cover of Summertime Blues from their debut album Vincebus Eruptum. It's not about just influence either. They had the sound too. The only difference from them and Black Sabbath was a tuned down guitar

A lot of things wrong with this: 1. They included the most well known or popular albums instead of the ones that actually helped progress and evolve the metal genre. For example, they chose British Steel instead of Sad Wings of Destiny or Sin After Sin that defined the elements of heavy metal 2.Def Leppard 3. Slayer didn't help define speed metal, it already existed, they did however define Extreme metal 4. Rust in Peace obviously isn't Megadeth's most underappreciated album 5. Cliff Burton wasn't a guitarist goddammit 6. While Master of Puppets is an undoubted masterpiece, Ride the Lightning was more unexpected and dynamic and it deserved the spot That's all folks

As for the placement of albums on the list. that's up too the fans, watchmojo just makes the polls and hosts the results. And no matter how much you want to deny it. Def Leppard is metal and the list said most important, not necessarily the best. Def Leopard were the progenitors of late 80's Glam metal. They were very important to the metal scene of the time.

Actually, Sabbath's debut was the first metal album, but it didn't include the first metal songs. There were metal songs before there were metal albums or bands. The creation of metal is attributed to the band Bitter Creek with their song "Plastic Thunder" released in 1967.

Pantera in their "Diamond Darrell" days before Phil joined (and even a bit after) were laughably LA scene... watch the video where they get out of the VW Bug. High & Dry for it's time was solid, a classic album. Now if you ask me to rate Cowboys from Hell against Adrenalize... well duh no contest, but DL chose to go pop so whatever. Anyway, for the usually lame WatchMojo it's a pretty solid list. Don't forget these albums span almost 20 years and sounds change. I would say HnD was closer to "real" original heavy metal than GNR ever was. BTW RJD got an honorable mention but Rainbow should have been on the list in the first place. Rock on!

Yes. Their album High N Dry was a phenomenal rock album. It was the greatest rock album in that moment in time. This was also during the time before Mtv got their hooks into Def Leppard and before there was any Speed Metal, Thrash or Hair Metal tags (Glam Rock was around since the New York Dolls btw). So we're talking about a time BEFORE Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, Exodus & Anthrax. This is when the heaviest bands were Black Sabbath (with R.J.Dio), Blue Oyster Cult, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Scorpions, UFO & MSG.

Eleni Tsou I know. It is almost like anything played with an electric/distorted guitar is "metal". I think that is why Heavy Metal has never really gotten it's due and respect in the world of music. Especially when you look at places like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The only real metal band in there is AC/DC. The older, 60's farts who only think The Beatles and Joni Mitchel (whom I like both lol) don't know how nor have they tried to actual understand and get into the world of heavy metal. It is so foreign to them that they lump it all together where in their minds there is really no difference between Nelson or Overkill lol. If the Hall Of Fame is suppose to be about influence in music history how can they not have a Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, or Scorpions in there? ...because for them if it ain't hippie and ain't dam skippie! (Did I really just type that lol) Heck, look how long it took them to get Kiss, Deep Purple, and Alice Cooper In. That alone should tell us that it will be decades if Metal ever will get a fair shot. IMO>

A lot of youngsters on here who do not know what they are talking about. 1977 -1984 Def Leppard was Heavy Metal. They helped create NWOBHM from which we got thrash, death, black and power metal. They toured with Iron Maiden, Ozzy and Judas Priest. 1983-1987 Pantera was glam. They wore make-up, teased their hair, wore spandex, the whole nine yards. They toured with Stryper, Dokken and the like. Obviously things changed. Doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Def Leppard was considered Metal back when they were super radio popular but the standards for Metal got upped as the years went by and now they are Hard Rock. The Def Leppard the list talked about was the old Def Leppard considered heavy metal.

It's shameful that Judas Priest are placed so low on this list. They may have been the first band to actually *identify* as metal (unlike Deep Purple, Led Zep, Sabbath, AC/DC or the Scorpions) and they gave us so many of the genre's key sonic and visual hallmarks.

It has everything; the heaviness, the occult, dark subjects, apocalyptic riffs, attack drumming, and extended instrumentation. Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow is also the heaviest band in the mid-70s era with Rising.

The heaviest stuff at that point was Motorhead. Venom wouldn't release their first album until 1981. So compared to their peers at the time Def Leppard was NWOBHM.

i agree. but there's definitely a difference between what they were considered at the time, and what hindsight has defined them as in retrospect. it seems they formed in something of an overlap style that wasn't defined yet, and eventually settled into glam rock, power ballad, anthem, style stuff.

I can’t help but feel that Korn and Slipknot’s debut albums were and are watershed moments in heavy metal history. Those albums paved the way for the new wave of heavy metal in America in the late 90s. Both bands owe a huge debt to bands like Pantera and Rage Against the Machine.

"We gladly recognize Megadeth as not just another Metallica rip off" It's Mustaine who wrote most of the songs in Kill Em' All and Metallica used many Mustaine's riffs in later albums. And Cliff Burton was not a guitarist but a bassist, It's sad to watch how watchmojo barely knows about anything.
