I grew up with Pfeffernüsse and Lebkuchen during Christmas among Zimtsterne and Spritz Gebäck. My mom would bake for days and had to hide the cookies in tins so we'd have enough for Christmas Eve dinner and after church. I lost Mom last year and I'll never get to have a cookie Christmas ever again. Thank you Chef John for brining back amazing childhood memories. If you could make Zimtsterne or a recipe for, I'd be over the moon! Anise Plätzchen were another yummy treat. Yes, my Christmases as a child in Germany were actually not too bad, lots of baked goods and yummy Blood Oranges from Israel. Chef John, I wish you an amazing Christmas and Holiday season!!! Thank you 🥰🥰🥰🎄🎄🎄
You do have a knack for making baking entertaining. Who knew this could be a thing?!
If Chef John deems a cookie the best of all time, that's enough for me to give it a try.

I’ve made these now for 3 years and I can attest they are wonderful. I’ve even made after Christmas to enjoy in January, delicious with a cup of hot tea!
I made Chef John's Pfeffernusse cookies. Pfeffernusse had been my favorite Christmas cookie forever. The taste of them signaled the beginning of the Christmas season for me. I got them every year at Trader Joe's, and as often maddeningly happens with T. Joe's items, one year they were no more...so sad. I found a recipe and made them, but they didn't turn out well and were rock hard. But with Chef John's recipe, success! I rolled in powdered sugar while still warm, simply because that's my preference. Happy to have my holiday pfeffernusse back.
I made the first cookies. Never had a cookie like that in my life and we LOVED them. The cayenne took it over the top. Definitely a must try.

I made them last Christmas too. They were great. I plan on making them again this year.

Yes - I wondered about the cayenne, but trusted Chef John and tossed it in. When I tasted the dough I thought it might be a bit too spicy, but by the time it mellowed in the frig for a couple of days, the cookies turned out with just the right amount of spiciness.
GO CHEF JOHN!!!
😂🤣 I love your humor so much.
Gingerbread BISCOTTI!! I'm planning my christmas cookie boxes!!! this was what i was looking for!!!
We always make Russian tea cakes for Christmas. My Mom switches it up a bit and used almond extract instead of vanilla and put a maraschino cherry inside for a cute surprise. They are great both ways. So delicious!

Never thought to use a maraschino. Great idea!

That addition is so clever…I’ll try it this year!
Baking powder makes a cookie cakey, while baking soda makes it crispy. That’s why you see both in many cookie recipes
I've been baking for 60 years and tried these today. This is the best, most tender shortbread I ever baked. I'm making them for a community event and truly will be proud to serve them. I just bought some carved wooden molds for gingerbread, and made six Christmas tree cookies from this dough as well. The dough kept the definition of the carving...can't wait for them to cool so I can decorate them. I made the thumbprint cookies exactly as shown in your recipe. Thank you so very much, Chef John!
John I missed you so much. Good to see you again and again you know my food wishes as always. Merry Christmas John.
My mother came from Germany and she always called what is called Russian teacakes here, in English snowballs. Later I was surprised by the Russian name and also the cookie being referred to as Mexican wedding cakes.
My Grandma on my mother's side, loved these cookies!! Thank you for showing them!! Happy Holidays!😊🌲
An excellent compilation of cookies🎉. Thanks!
“Spatulate” new vocabulary, I like it.
My first time on this channel. I love Chef John's delivery...so fun to listen to :) I am making these tomorrow. Merry Christmas 2022 from Summerland, B.C. Canada. God Bless

Dear Mr Chef John, I can't believe you haven't made butter pecan ice cream from scratch! Thanks for all the work you do, I've learned a lot about cooking!
My family has a peppernut recipe that calls for white pepper and also sour cream. We're German Mennonite with Canadian roots.
Those thumbprints are my favorite. My students always made them with red raspberry jam to match our school colors.
Love your Santa suit bucket to hold cookies! These are million dollar desserts! Gotta try them come what may.
Chef John is so funny and entertaining I watched this entire video even though I only needed a couple of recipes
Russian tea cakes are a Christmas tradition in my home. I absolutely love them. Thanks for all the great recipes!

My grandparents used to give these to us all the time... I forgot what they were really called because we referred to them as Pepper Rocks because they were hard as rocks. I used to chipmunk it till it softened up a bit.
I made chef John’s thumbprint cookies for my family two years ago. They have sense blown up! It is a staple to be made every year, and has booted our previous thumbprint recipe, that our family has had for years, well out the window! 100 out of 10 would recommend
I love all your videos. Sense of humor is priceless. Merry Christmas to you and Michelle🎄
I made the pfeffernusse cookies last week and I loved them! 5 stars. I will make these next Christmas too
I'd like to send you my great grandmother's pfeffernuse recipe straight from Germany 1920's. I made them every year with my grandmother, filled her kitchen. We made our gingerbread men out of this recipe as well. Fresh spices were moist, dark and light raisins. My job was always to hammer the chunk of bakers ammonia for the cookies! Yup, a chunk of bakers ammonia. Our cookies always stuck together, considered a bonus huge cookie when you're told to only have one
I made the Pfeffernüsse cookies last Christmas and loved them! They’re now in the holiday cookie rotation.
I've been watching several of your videos and while i rarely comment I wanted to let you know I really enjoy listening to you. Soothing voice and quirky humor are quality ingredients to enhance your recipes :)
Made these for my Christmas Cookie Platters and they are wonderful! I sprinkled glaze with nutmeg and finished off with candy holly and berry decorations ... perfect!!
“C” is for Cookie!!! That’s Good Enough For Me!!!
Pepper nut cookies are my fave Xmas cookies too!! Yum
so funny and entertaining looking forward to more fun recipes
I had pfenernu@ssees (sp) 🤣 for the first time this year. I honestly thought I hated it at first but I tried a second one with some coffee and it was honestly thrilling! It's a flavor combo like no other cookie I've ever had.
I love all of his recipes. So hard to choose though. I actually make the Russian tea cakes and they are an annual thing in my family.
No Christmas cookie list is complete without sugar cookies and the Italian cookies with the lemon icing.🤤

Chef John's gingersnaps are my all time favorite holiday cookie recipe!!
Absolutely love your video. Thank you! thank you! thank you! You were very detailed. May the force be with you!
My mother rolled the pfefferneuse dough into a one inch roll and cut them into cookies. Cheers.
I found these at Publix. Had no idea what they were, but gave them a try. They are delicious 😋 But, there’s no cayenne. I don’t taste pepper. They taste like licorice (star anise) and are coated with powdered sugar. Definitely a new favorite.
I am the snookie of my cookie ❤ Tony Montana scarface cookies 😂 Thank you 🙏 very educational and fun cookie video ❤ definitely subscribing 😁
I've made the thumbprints from this video's recipe several times and they're heavenly. I plan on making the peppernuts (not spelling that disaster) this year.
Thanks, Chef, for your timely video compilation. A very Merry Christmas to you and Mrs. Chef.
Hi chef John! You make chocolate chip cookies just the way I do and I love that texture myself. The only difference is that I use brewed cold coffee instead of milk. Give it a try you might like it 🙂! And happy holidays to everyone!
Love these, thank you!
Pam here….My grandmother made hers about 1/3 tsp. Rolled them then pressed with thumb making them a little disk…then they were harder, darker, and they were fabulous coffee or milk dunking little flavor bombs!

…..she also didn’t frost or coat with powdered sugar.
These are just amazing recipes. So going to try some of these xx
Such great classic recipes
The pheffernusse cookies are my favorite from Germany!
My German-Hungarian grandmother let them sit out overnight, covered with a towel before baking. They fermented - slightly - which added a light tangy flavor. Can't wait to try these!
My best Christmas gift is this chocolate chip cookie recipe. Thanks, Santa John.
I have a sifter!I also add both baking powder and baking soda ! My cookies come out chewy and delicious every time!,
wow - love this guy .
Looks delicious!
Chef John….my mom’s best Christmas candy was melted white chocolate and KIX cereal…made like peanut clusters….I wrinkled my nose at it as I hated KIX …but the flavor meld was magic. Give white chocolate a try this way….ADDicTIVE!!
You are an Inspiration, Chef John. Thank You and God Bless You.
Love making Christmas cookies!
Wow very tasty thank you for sharing
Wonderful compilation of Holiday Cookies! Love your videos!
I like the unadorned top. Can't wait to try these!
Awesome vids! Thank you for demystifying rum balls for me.
I will try that first pepper cookie for sure.
Love your technique - the up close filming is very helpful to the process. Never thought of peanut butter cookies or chocolate chip cookies as "Christmas" cookies, but they never fail to please for any occasion. Thanks for sharing! Warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Awesome Santa cookie tin!
Been following for YEARS chef love your recipes ❤️🎄 happy holidays
Gorgeous Christmas Cookies Chef John!!! 😂❤❤
Perfect!
Wow NYC sharing 🌹
best hour I have spent in days.
I made your pfeffernüsse last year. They were really nice, kind of like a less molassasy gingerbread. Will definitely be making all of these at some point.
Literally LOL’d at the “Mickey Mouse” butter and brown sugar 😂😂😂 Yup! That’s exactly what I thought it looked like …😂
I love cookies! All of these look excellent. I really want to try "the best cookies in the world."
First time I heard about this Pepper nut cookies. Thank you, Chef John, I must make these cookies because the ingredients.
Wow dear Aap ki recipe bahut bahut achi hai 🧐👍 mujhe bahut pasand i.. try Karna too banta hai thanks for sharing ❤️❤️👍 Really looking good 👍 Amazing recipe 😋😋🤤
Merry Christmas Chef John!
We make the jam ones every year. Tried the peanutbutter ones and loved those too. Russian cookies are next on the list since I used to eat something similar in my childhood.
Those Pfeffernusse are really good with coffee! Joe from Germany
Until I had seen these all one after another like this, I hadn't realized just how OCD Chef John was about getting his cookies all the same size. That sorbet scoop probably has its own holster.
Our go to cookies for Thanksgiving and Christmas are the Peanut Butter Blossoms :D We have been doing them forever.
Chef John… I absolutely love you… i’m pretty sure I mention your name one or two days a week when talking about making food… Like “Chef John said to do it this way, or I learned this from Chef John”… And it’s always amazing. Thank you so much Chef John… You are an absolute fucking San Francisco
really attractiv e . I will try to make this
I love Pfeffernusse…we’ve always preferred them coated in powdered sugar… lebkuchen is next on my list!
Pepernoten also are Dutch round Xmass time, festive cookies.
Rum balllllllls brings back a lot of memory
😋 Merry Christmas
Jam cookies are my favorite
Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season. I love your videos and I have made several of them. I wanted to know if you have a video on all the utensils you use for cooking and baking? Thank you. 😊
I've got some Lebkuchengewürz (German gingerbread spice mix) to try in the Pfeffernüsse cookies!
My holiday cookie is chewy ginger molasses cookies! Might give one of these a go, if I am well enough by the end of the month. I got the ick. lol
I made the pfeffernuse cookies for our Christmas dinner this year and they were loved by young and old. No offense Chef, but I added a bit more lemon juice to the icing... the family loved them. Thank You and Happy New Year!
On the pepper nut christmas cookies just a tip compress your scoop when making the balls try andcompress first then release the ball for me it comes out perfect every time just a thought Merry Christmas
Pfeffuenuse are my favorite cookie. My moms recipe is different than chef John’s but that’s ok! May need to try these myself.
Mu favorite vlogger cook. He speaks only we don't have to look at an person full of ego
In Germany we use sugar beet syrup instead of molasses for Pfeffernüsse. I would be interested in the taste difference. In Germany the icing is sometimes also pink.
My mom always rolled her pfeffernusse into a thin log and then cut them into little "cubes".
Wonderful!! Different cookies for Christmas this year! Thank you 😊 what is the best way to store them? That’s always the big question for me. There’s not always room in the freezer for tins of cookies!
