Top 10 Historical Grimoires [Esoteric Saturdays]

In this video, I show you a few of the Grimoires that have had a great influence on other Grimoires throughout history. This is a list of essentials that you need to know about if you're starting out with Magic and are getting curious about where most of the sigils and incantations, and rituals have their origins, particularly for Solomonic magic.
I didn't mention St Cyprian, as I've not found his work has been particulalry influential outside of his iberic region, though I'd be happy to be shown the error of my thinking, however, I did omit Trithemius and his "Art of Drawing Spirits into Crystals" which was hugely influential on the whole of western magic (I'm looking forward to Scarlet Imprint's upcoming book on the subject).
(Please note that there are general overviews of most of the books mentioned heare on my channel)

There is a grimoire that is from 14th century Iceland called Galdrabók you should read it. It contained many Icelandic staves for necromancy all the way to luck. There was a book written on it called “the Galdrabók” by Stephen flowers.

I love Abramelin's Sacred Magic. I only completed Two Months of the six month ritual, but it certainly raised my awareness. A bit of luck recently. I experienced a Kundalini Heart Chakra Activation due to a karmic past life partner reunion. So, now I'm looking to refine power and Spirituality. I'm loving the "full circle" aspect of being lead right back to Abramelin.

Thank you for stating the distinction between the last two. I’m a little embarrassed to admit I had some confusion regarding the difference between the Goetia/Lesser key and the Greater. These are fascinating and I will eventually own them but my reluctance to engage them practically has placed them lower on the must have scale than some of my own prized books on the occult, like Crowley’s Liber ABA. A few years back they did a new massive hardcover version of Book 4, I highly recommend it and would love to see a review!

I received my three Bibliotheque bleue gimoires from BLP last week and was very pleased. Not quite what I was expecting but aimed at a level of innocence and un-sophistication that suits me fine. Somewhat concerned to hear, yet confirmed in my suspicions: Luficer Rofocale rules over all of "Europe and all other disasters". Similarly reassured my own failures; rather than being results of some series of errors, deficiencies or bad judgement; are surely down to my being born on an unlucky day. Extremely useful 😁.

I've been trying to do that for a very long time and getting more and more confused. Many thanks. I also very much appreciated seeing the actual books rather than watching someone just talking about them. Regarding Dee's complete works, would Peterson's Five Books of Mystery be the best substitute until I decide whether I really need the Kevin Klein set? Thanks.

Hi Stephen! I'm so glad I could help! I'm afraid I've been wondering the same think about the five books for some time, but never getting round to actually forking out for it - while it's cheaper, and certainly more readable, it's still not pocket-money, though I implicitly trust Joseph Peterson to make the material come alive as he always does. Stephen Skinner also recently republished Casaubon's A True And Faithful Relation... which he renamed Dr John Dee's Spiritual Diaries which I believe would complement the Five Books with little or no overlap, and as I say, in a much more reader-friendly format.

I doubt YT took them down. Sometimes people approach the occult before they've had a chance to properly experience exoteric religion, and when they discover exoteric religion they freak out that they might go to hell because of their previous work. This just demonstrates a lack of understanding of both exoteric and esoteric practice which are in fact one and the same, and not, as most would love to imagine, warring opposites to be taken sides with.

What a great quiz. My prophetic skills failed me (for the first time ever, doubtlessly!) as I misguessed a couple of times: Lemegeton (pretty close to The Goetia of Dr. Rudd of course), Hygromanteia (for its grandfather status) and The Book of Oberon (for its visual and LSD-like parts). I was so "certain" that you would rank The Three Books of Occult Philosophy somewhere in top 3 but... that would be uninteresting for a popcorn chewing audience as these 3 books would technically have to make up the entirety of top 3 itself 😉

  • @FoolishFishBooks

3 books is definitely indispensable, I'm not sure why, but I don't think of it as a grimoire as much as a survey of magic at the time of writing. But on the other hand, Picatrix falls under that category, so I don't really have a leg to stand on. I live the Book of Oberon, it's gorgeous and fun, but like, say, An Excellent Booke, I'm not sure it belongs in a top 10 most indispensable as it is rather influenced by others rather than influencing others.

Also, Mathers' version is the version that Crowley used, to some degree of success, so it can't be that bad... Anyway, I think it's mainly the process that's interesting - long-term self-denial and meditation on perfect divinity for long stretches, and then a profound ritual introduction. It's always the same thing, the Pentecostal Church use a similar process before baptising an adult. You can check out Michael Ceccetelli's "Holy Guardian Angel" for essays by respected Magicians such as Aaron Leitch and Fr. • @FoolishFishBooks

    @FoolishFishBooks

    4 жыл бұрын

Yes, I would imagine that most 'mentors' would dismiss it as a joke. An analogy in the world of IT is that people who learned to program in C or Assembly often think of JavaScript as a joke. Nevertheless, most programs are now written with JavaScript because it takes a 10th of the time, and there's very little learning involved (comparatively). Have you tried either method? I've had nothing but success with GoM material. Read the introduction, is only a few pages, and you'll see why so-called 'serious' practitioners might dismiss it. I have no regard for authenticity or historical accuracy. For me, if it works, it works 😜 And if it works with nearly none of the hassle, then that's the method for me!

It had to be original, a source of influence rather than just a re-hash of previous techniques (which ruled out The Magus), it had to be historically actually used (so no Necronomicon or any other work of fiction), and it had to be a manual of workable techniques rather than an essay discussing the techniques (so no Three Books of Agripa or Eliphas Levi). I don't know Owen Davies, should I?

Foolishfish...what do you think of Stephen Skinner and his work? Just out of interest. Tell me to mind my own business and stop being so nosey...HAAA!!! Apologies for being so nosey. I have to admit that I am extremely nosey sometimes. Especially when it's regarding any subject that I find fascinating and I'm researching at the moment. Not that my research on the occult, Magick or anything to do with esoteric knowledge is ever something that I'll stop looking into and will ever get bored of researching those kinda subjects. Plus it's that much of an enormous amount of knowledge and I doubt I'll ever be able to look into everything that is out there. Even the best magicians probably haven't read everything that's covering these topics. I doubt even the "Great Beast" aka Mr. Crowley would of read everything he would of wanted to. Sometimes I just wish I could read much much faster than I currently do. I've done sigils for my reading to be a little bit faster and speed it up so I can read so soooooo much more books and that. I bet there's a few people who think that exact same thing, about reading things much faster. Just for the benefit of being able to get through a lot more books in our lifetime. Any tips on reading quicker and much faster then that'd be much appreciated. Nuff Love Anyways, Y'all. Peace Out ✌🏻☮

Hopefully its not too , being of the same subject . The question is , if you ever read any alice bailey books . I read some of them in the 80s , I bought them not knowing it was e... I had heard that these books were hitlers bedside table books a few years after I acquired them . And that the 4th initiation was to put the person in pain to become an Ascended master crap n heard that occurred to Jesus Christ on the cross , the 4th initiation . Supposedly not in Vain or Vanity , the martyrdom , for e... isnt Purpose or reason to do that to a Person , let alone Jesus Christ .. I got so upset , I burned that book , Serving Humanity n partly another of a.b. s books , Esoteric healing . That one partly , because thinking maybe there was some good intelligence for healing Humanity . My husband said I was going to burn the whole house down , when I did it . And I heard it was living books which I noticed , the words visually poping out weirdly when I first attempted to read Serving Humanity . I couldnt really read it easily because it was so extensively left brain worded . I was wondering if you had read any of them , if you noticed n heard any of that too 🤔 Also I have a book in storage , that's called the Victorian Grimoire , printed in brown ink , pretty bulky . I dont remember the author . I held on to , it wasnt dark at all , like the ones here it seems .
