My fave World Cup too. Almost every country had a standout star, plus the big footballing countries had squads that were stacked with talent.

@@user-dx8en9bc6l I'm a hardcore fan of Dutch football (though not much of the current team) but take it from me, bad luck is when you hit a post or a player suffers an injury...losing in a penalty shootout is not luck, its temperament and technique under pressure. I'm not saying a penalty shootout does not involve luck but you can't blame failure solely on luck. Missing chances (which Holland had in the semi-final against Brazil) isn't luck. This was the last truly great Dutch team (the Robben/Sneijder generation was more successful in the world cup reaching the final and a semi-final but were inferior to this team) and I was gutted when they lost to Brazil in 1998 but on reflection it wasn't luck. Just as Brazil in 1982 were not "unlucky". Again, gifting the opposition goals through poor defending and defensive blunders is not luck. Football has too much of this alibi/excuse culture compared to other sports where the buck stops.

The Bergkamp goal was the best of all of them. It was perfection.

it was his play, long pass , great ball control and quick execution, that was how Ajax played at that time, it was all Ajax school of football, and Bergkamp and de Boer were masters of that, nothing absurd about that, it was many years before tactic of one million passes before attempt to shoot become reality

Easily Top 🎱ALL TIME in ALL competitions, not just WC. Messi's goal against Getafe is on that list too. I would place Borgetti's SUBLIME and skillful header as the BEST header in all World Cups (yes, much better than Van Persie).

In my opinion. This was the last World Cup. Im an Argentinian and happy we won in Qatar.. but gosh, how I miss the late 90s early 2000s football.

Bergkamp 😂 how tf did he time his running while looking over his shoulder a lob pass that long and high and then dropped the ball like a feather with his foot. While running forward. Dayum.

I was 13 years old back then. My first real World Cup. In 1994 I was just too little and though I watched it I couldn't remember much.

One word Bergkamp - best goal of that tourno no question. Only Owen's goal rivals it.

Bergkamp is running watching in front of him while the ball is in the air. He was allready scanning his environmont. Just a world class goal of a world class player.

That goal from Bergkamp is one of the best goals in the entire history of the World Cup. Thierry Henry said Bergkamp was the best player he’s ever played with. And he played with Messi and Zidane. Bergkamp was at that level.

France 98 is my best WC since I started watching football.

Bergkamp's goal is what defines football, the pass, the control, the dribble and the finish, just amazing!

People commenting on Bergkamp’s goal & rightly so… it’s also important to remember that it was 1-1 in the 94th minute with extra time looming when that happened 😮… legendary goal

I always regret not watching this WC live, I only would've been 7 years old and while i was already playing, and started watching a little bit, i dont think i would've fully appreciated it at that age. My first WC i watched live was the next one in 2002 which i still have very fond memories of. Aside from some blatant corruption, i really liked it, it had some amazing players as well, and of course it was my first WC so it will always have a special place in my heart.

I like your post. '86 was the first WC I was cognizant about, however at age 9 I didn't pay much attention😏 wore the Italia '90 shirt and saw a few games. '98 is when football spoke to me 😌 my ultimate WC is Deutschland '06 when I was on host soil for the first time🇩🇪

Ronaldo's against Netherlands in semis was great as well

The touch from Bergkamp at full pace from the long ball...I had never seen anything like it at the time and pretty sure I haven't since. Pure work of art.

Best world cup ever. Most of the legendary players were in their prime time. The squads for Netherland, Brazil, and France were like dream teams.

The balance and composure Bergkamp showed in that goal was something else, so chill.

My first men or women’s World Cup. Bergkamp’s goal was goal of the tournament and one of the most iconic.

The ball used during those years were crazy hard.. shots were just a straight piercing spear into the goals.. if you were on your prime back then and if you have that prime condition today, you’d be a monster.. your shots would be so hard the ball will turn left and right

1998 was the first World Cup I saw, I'm from Argentina, and Bergkamp goal was great but at the same time sad, having said that I also remember when Owen played against us, we didn't know how to stop him, it was like England's secret weapon. Remember that in '98 you didn't see much international football here. ps: if we had beaten Holland, Argentina would have had the most difficult path to the World Cup. ENGLAND> HOLLAND> BRAZIL> FRANCE o_0!!!

There are so many world class footballer in the 1998 World Cup. I sometimes watch Argentina vs Netherlands. Argentina had an important chance to win after Numan was sent off. After Batistuta hit the post, Ortega was sent off and Bergkamp scored the winning goal. So unlucky for Argentina.

Well it was definitely an unbelievable moment for him and us supporters : not only he had never scored for France before (and never scored with them ever again despite remaining a team member for 8 more years) but it was his second goal of the night, and it came after a mistake from him which allowed Croatia to take the lead.
