    The IKEA dresser, as sad as the linked deaths may be, falls under the same category as "Don't dry your cat in the microwave." With the dresser came a picture book showing how to build it. Within this picture book was also shown what these nice dowels, screws and angle bracket packed in one small plastic bag delivered in the package were for...to bolt it to the wall so it wouldn't tip over. You didn't even need to be able to read to do it right, but some folks either didn't care or had Japanese style paper walls...

    I was about to write the same message. The metal clips in the top corners are visible and were part of the dresser and should have been attached to the mount that is screwed to the wall. if you're that lazy, it becomes a survival of the fittest test, I guess.

    Completely agree. If parents fail to tell their children that a chest of drawers isn't a climbing frame then that's on them, not Ikea. I have many flat-packed pieces of furniture, about 12 Billy bookcases for my collections, all screwed into the walls, never had an issue with any of them. Some people are just plain thick!

    Yes, explanations help a lot. But I guess it was not as obvious this could happen in the US as it was in Germany, where the name alone is a hint for the potential risk. 'Es wird dich zerMALMen!' really just means that it will crush you.

    Actually Watchmojo wasn't clear, the damn wall mounts would fail and rip out of the dresser. Quite a few people at the time said the only way to make them safe was to use longer wall bolts and actual bolts, not screws, to fasten the wall safety to the dresser.

  • @j.r.5842

    @j.r.5842

    @@brentlloyd7908 Actually can't blame a company for not knowing what kind of wall you have at home. Brick, concrete, stone? Provided dowels & screws will work. Drywall cardboard, Ytong? Use other dowels & screws will work. Wood? Use only the screws, no dowels. It's not rocket science, but I have to admit that I can't remind if there was picture for what kind of wall the provided dowels would work and not. Nonetheless, it was made clear what could happen and that measures against needed to be taken. And I didn't read anything of the items simply ripping out of the dresser, and never had a case - not meaning to sound rude, but looking at my dressers here, you would need some heavily obese kid to provide enough force. Drawers probably would give in prior to the wall mount.

    I seriously used to be addicted to energy drinks, Monster specifically, it was so bad that at the end I was drinking between 4-5 a day, I was working on assembly line and wasn't a coffee drinker (still not) so I used monsters to keep me going, and I seriously was feeling horrible, I was constantly uneasy, I had frequent headaches, I was irritable and kind of always upset and easily stressed, I was always tired but constantly jittery... But there I would be pounding back monsters (to the point where everybody knew me as a hardcore energy drink guy), but one day I vowed to stop... And the next day I bought a monster... I drank half of it and said to myself "why am I doing this?" And dumped the rest out, in front of the whole crew I was running, and that was the last time I have ever drank an energy drink and that was almost 5 years ago... And seriously like a week after I stopped I felt so much better, I felt more relaxed, more happy, way less tired (ironically) and way more focused, I was sleeping way better, no more headaches or fucking weird smelling pisses (I know gross, but it was horrible), and that was enough motivation for me to never touch another energy drink again... I seriously believe they should be outlawed

    Unfortunately until said companies are fully regulated by outside sources and no longer able to lobby for self regulation (which is how things like the ignition switch was known to the company for a decade without being remedied with noone else catching it) fines aren't going to have any affect on overall safety. Only once proper independent scrutiny (preferably multilayered as well) is legislated for all major industries and the loopholes for self regulation are closed once and for all, will we start to see positive change. Sadly this is unlikely to occur in capitalist economies as these companies have such absurd amounts of capital behind them that even fines in the ranges of tens to hundreds of millions are a drop in the bucket and don't offer any real deterrent to cutting corners at the cost of lives.
