SUMMARIES:
- Originally the commercial was in black and white, which actually does soften the terror a little. Once they released it in color, Ronald McDonald became a truly terrifying clown.
- The backlash was so strong that McDonald's actually 'rested' the real Ronald McDonald and kept him out of the spotlight for a long while.
- Not only that but not a single word is uttered which makes this a truly terrifying commercial.
- No Ronald McDonald. No happy little theme tune. Just a woman who loves her hat. This one may not be scary but it sure is crazy.
- Although, it does have to be said that many found the commercial quite exciting with the Rosanne star coming off as more arousing than creepy.
- Interestingly this campaign didn't get pulled off the air for any of those reasons it was actually the estate of Bobby Darin that stopped it by suing McDonald's.
- After the movie was released, Burger King added the line 'The Morale is: Never trust a clown!' just before the end credits.
- We know this was supposed to be 'tongue in cheek' but it just comes across as creepy and wrong on so many levels.
- Maybe because of this it is very apt to have this 'Big Brother' theme in a McDonald's commercial?
- The ad looks like it should be advertising something on those special 'grown-up' channels and not every family's favorite fast-food restaurant.

Willard Scott was the original Ronald McDonald in that first commercial. Perhaps he saw before the rest of us how creepy he looked, and became a weatherman later on. Smart choice!

I enjoy your videos because I'm in hospital and have a lot of time to kill,!! So I read allot and look up anything & everything,!! I've been doing this for most of my life,!! I started staying in the hospital when I was 6 & then at 14& from them on lets just say I would be rich & I could fire my crew & shut down my body modifying boutique I've been branding/piercing/modifying for 27yrs andunfortunately if things don't get better I'm going to have to shut down but crossed fingers,!! Because I'm doing really good but it's not paying all the bills right now,!!! Needless to say I'll be here through all the holidays and then some,!! you guys and some other channels that I enjoy make my stay more bearable and I appreciate it THANKS!!! 💞🖤👍🏻😁

(PA)I AM A CLASSICALLY TRAINED CHEF TRAINED IN SAN FRANCISCO & OF COURSE I APPRENTICE FOR 2 YEARS THEN WENT TO BODY INTENSIVE COURSES IN SAN FRANCISCO AT " FAKIER'S body intensive and I took every class every course they had and every level beginners intermediate and advanced and so you can update for 9 classes or more,! Whether it was Branding piercing or modifying,! So I was doing a lot,!! But it's worth it I love it I don't regret it bought me my first home when I was 23 years old my car's I've been able raise three children that are all very independent,!! And that's all I could ask for!!! 💞👍🏻😁

man, that commercial with the celebrities eating quarter pounders is not that cringey at all the only thing cringey is nikacado avocado eating and people that eating with their mouth open and making smacking sounds EDIT: that moonman one is pretty cool

My brother and our friend worked at McDonalds for about a year. Our friend was a manager. They both absolutely *refused* to work when Ronald McDonald was at their restaurant. I always took my brother to work because he didn't have a license yet. Even if he had had to work on one of those days I would have dropped him off across the road. Screw that creepy ass mother f'er. No, I'm not freaked out by clowns because of It. I saw a movie called Delicatessen when I was a kid. I still get freaked out if I think about it.

I liked Mac Tonight. He was a great mascot
Once I saw a mc Donald’s one. It was like a perfume or coffee advert. A lady was in a long black dress, walking around a castle. At the end she comes to a man, is about to kiss him but then pulls out a burger and eats it. Then the mc Donald’s outro comes on.

It used to be a weird phobia that only a few people would admit to. Now everybody's afraid of clowns. I trace it back to an episode of "Charles in Charge" where Willie Aames was said to have a fear of clowns, which they made funnier by having him dress as one for Halloween and then have a freak panic attack every time he caught a glimpse of himself in a mirror.
