Ben Milligan oh my GOD Why can't shonen characters actually be smart? Like +PyroV3 said, I only know characters like Killua or Gintoki or Ichigo, who actually knows what the hell is going on. And I hate when in practically all of harem anime, the main female protagonist falls down from the sky or some beautiful new girl that just transferred. And the oblivious as fuck main guy. And the main character being either a stupid underachiever or a 0% self esteem normal guy, that for some reason a bunch of super-talented people get attracted to. And by the end of the story, the character doesn't change AT ALL. And the ridiculous (Not anything like real life) reactions to accidents (That 90% of the time never fucking happen) where the girl mindlessly slaps someone and screams like she's being raped. And the girls ALWAYS blaming the main heroine in either a harem or fucking anything. Someone invisible flips a girl's skirt, and she goes to slap whoever was in the vicinity. And she knows invisible fuckers exist.

Great point. Can think of Naruto season one Post-Zabuza arc. Kids fought with shurikens, knives, lightning charges, fire blasts, tidal bombs, energy balls but rarely anyone ever died. Stupid when you think about it.

They were bred for that kind of punishment. While in some cases it's amazing they don't die, in other cases they live in a world where they NEED to take the punishment, or it's death. So it goes either way.

ShowMeLoveFilms There's a fine line between amazing and absurd. Realism is what makes certain anime wonderous. Granted the ability to summon lightning isn't realistic but being portrayed as a human character it's no stretch to think that a char should die getting struck by a bolt head on.

The cliché where, whenever a character gets ill, its always a sudden fever that's so bad they just collapse and can't even wake up so they are confined to a bed, so another character puts a damp flannel on their head.

For me, Pokemon comes to mind when I hear this. The series has been running for what, nearly 20 years now, and Ash is still an absolutely terrible battler. Of course, he doesn't age so it's not like he's actually had years of experience to get better... if that makes sense... and both the lack of aging and the low skill level are likely there to make him more appealing to younger Pokemon fans (I know when I was young and had the games I wasn't very good, and I'm pretty sure I was the rule rather than the exception).

SAO is the perfect example of animes that go off the rails just to please otaku's. Manga-wise, the best example is probably History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi. Starts off very great, but after several hundred chapters, the fanservice clearly comes before the story.

Also, here are the real top anime cliches (more than 10): 1. In class, the main character will sit by the window 2. In school, kids eat lunch on the roof 3. If there's a date, it will involve the couple going on a ferris wheel at some point, and then being really amazed by the view 4. If it's a school anime, there will be a school festival at some point, even if the anime doesn't take place in Japan 5. If a kid is half Japanese and half white, s/he will have blue eyes and blond hair. You know, because that's how genetics work. 6. In childhood, kids had the exact same hairstyle as they do in adulthood, but just with shorter hair 7. If there's a dramatic confrontation between two people, they will stand like ten feet apart from each other while talking to each other, in just a regular tone of voice, and somehow hear each other fine. 8. Babies and little kids are always super happy and laughing! 9. Food is like the most amazing and incredible thing ever, and characters always act amazed and surprised to see it; then tasting it will put them in a state of utter euphoria 10. If a woman is strong in character, she will have an enormous chest 11. If there's a sex scene, it will have elevator music 12. The heroine of any shoujo anime will nearly always have the same personality: timid and vulnerable but determined, and,to her surprise, "everyone likes her because of the warm smile on her face." When that isn't her personality, then instead she is "ditzy and clumsy but good-hearted," and again, to her surprise, "everyone likes her because of the warm smile on her face." 13. If there are two or more females on the cover of an anime, there will be gratuitous male-oriented fan service including loads of upskirt shots, the females "accidentally" grabbing each other's chests, and an obligatory hot springs episode with lesbian moments. At some point, there will be a scene where the main character will wake up lazily, and then stare at the alarm clock and freak out about how they overslept; then it will change to a scene of them running out of the house in a panic while still putting their jacket on and with a slice of toast in their mouth.

But literally, though, anime oversexualizes young women SO much! Like, the anime is telling the audience that the girls are all at the most 15 or around that age and yet they'll have girls with big boobs-which isn't impossible it's just a huge cliche in anime- or they'll have them wearing skintight/revealing clothing.... For example, My Hero Academia has female characters who are all about idk 15-16 and yet they're wearing revealing and skintight costumes? I understand they're heroes, and all, but come on. ***** Anime with talking cats. This season there is mikagura gakuen, kyoukai no rinne, fairy tail, sailor moon crystal, and show by rock(and probably more this season but I'm not watching everything) that all have talking cats in their shows. If it's a mascot, it's almost always a talking cat.

Magic girl animes all having a similar plot. 1) Person finds out they have powers/person gets powers. Often with the help of an animal or animal like sidekick. 2) person gets academic side kick (often with blue hair) 3) person gets whole team and have a bunch of episodes about fighting random monsters, meanwhile a villain plans to kill them. 4) one person fake dies. They get brought back because why not. 5) Villain defeated.

+agizzy23 Dont forget they are usually 5 or 6, all have colorful hair and matching eyes, when transform, their haircolor gets brighter and more colorful, their costumes also match their colors xD also they are all archetypes (The hyper/naiiv/annoying one is almost always the mainprotagonist, then a little smart-ass-bitch, a shy, low selfesteem one, a childish one (or even a younger child) and a quiet, wise one and sometimes a boy-ish girl xD) (I' mostly refer to DoReMi and TokyoMewMew and.. Cliches 1,2 & 4 sums up Go Princess Precure. Also another cliche in MG anime is that the lead girl is a dumb klutz with a younger sibling (usually a sister.) Examples are Doremi Harukaze (Ojamajo Doremi), Momoko Akatsumi (Powerpuff Girls Z), Saki Hyuuga/Cure Bloom (Futari wa Precure Splash Star) and Haruka Haruno/Cure Flora (Go Princess Precure). Usagi from Sailor Moon and Nagisa Misumi from Futari wa Precure have younger brothers.

Wolf Doggie I have a "bone" to pick with you (ahah puns :P) His and others hairstyles are not "excessive" it's one of the most creative hairstyles out there. Name ONE anime character who has hair even remotely like Yugi's. In fact with the over 750 anime titles Hulu has I couldn't find any front cover anime characters with hair nearly as creatively designed as his. And their hairstyles are not "retarded" you're just jealous you can't have hair as nice and gravity defying as theirs :P

AlwonDomz URGH, yeah IKR!? Elfman from fairy tail and Louis Armstrong from Fullmetal Alchemist are prime examples and it pisses me the fuck off. I guess this excist so that retarded teenagers expect that they can win in a fight against a much bigger and stronger opponent, well guess what, they are bigger because they have dedicated more time to bulk up up. And the cliche of some main characters that are in no way supernatural in their universe are able to make short work of armies, (One Piece, Fairy Tail). It's just dumb, if they have nothing that makes their power unique what's to say that there aren't billions of other people around the world that have gone through the same process. While I love me some anime, there is no denying that it is jaring, cringeworthy and dumb at times.

Facepalm on all these overused cliches. And you forgot some others like: 1- Overuse of shining powers and light shows. Even in humor animes a character can shoot a mega hyper titanic beam or ball or light. 2- Overcocky characters who talk too much. 3- Villian is OP first, then hero gets OP. OP overuse. 4- Overuse of drama in plot. 5- Characters who turn their back when talking. 6- A hell lot of talking and drama(damn it! stop talking and dramatizing and do something! Anything!) when fighting. 7- Dynamic Dramatic Background overuse(that fixed image of character, with background pattern moving frenetically). 8- A drawing style so limited that sometimes it seems that the same character was hired for a different anime, same as a real life actor. 9- Emo plots overused. 10- New villian killing/defeating previous badass/villian to show how strong is. OMG, I made a whole new top 10 anime cliches and overuses ._.

I think the Inuyasha dub is really good too, even though I no longer care about the show itself. One of my favorite dubs is Funimation's One Piece. It's absolutely brilliant and has made me love the characters. Of course, pretty much anything from Funimation is amazing, lol.

In today standards it is normal.

You forget that when the mother has a side lose ponytail= dead. Ex. Eren, Elric, etc.

Protagonists has colored hair...

Here's another: The mysterious person from the past who, for whatever reason, isn't in the present day and whose eyes/face are always shrouded or obscured in every flashback that includes them. Oftentimes, the flashbacks are either in black and white or have muted, grayed out color schemes.

Yell out your attack just before you hit the bad guy. it always catches them by surprise.

No.1 Not a cliche, t's just that that's the anime art style

I don't really see transformation as a cliche. Anytime your character has a change in ability or development, an associated change in appearance is expected as well. That's the entire point of animating such stories, to show visuals which associate with the themes of the story and show exaggerated imagery in general. Whether it's a change in outfit or improved body physique, transformation is nearly essential to visual expression of development in a character's design. Calling it cliche is like calling the beginning, middle, and end structures of storytelling cliche.

...seriously? not a single word about guys tripping over nothing and falling into boobs? SERIOUSLY? this is, like, the mother of annyoing cliches, even worse than the wilhelm-scream or bond villains!

omg you forgot one -_- and it drives me nuts. Every story ends up like this at some point, or is even sometimes the primary point of contention: Main character's thought pattern: "I am going to protect you" "I couldn't protect you" "I just wanted to protect everyone so I keep you all at a distance so you don't get hurt and try to do it all myself." "Protect protect protect protect protect protect..." Why do like half the animes out there end up with the main character obsessed with protecting people?

*an average looking boy accidentally discovers something and that thing gives him powers and then he saves the world* *senpai-kouhai relationship* *yandere* but this is pretty rare *an innocent and cute looking person sees a tragic moment and becomes a psychopath* *moeblobs* *incest realationship* *in a harem the guy usually falls in love with the first girl she meets* *a cute deity shows infront of a girl and asks if she wants to become a magical girl* examples: Fav and Kyubey

Chris Kostaras hot springs episodes, beach episodes. If set in a school guaranteed to have two or more festival episodes, one of which having a maid cafe, another with a play, and another of a festival outside of school(most likely tanabata). Oh almost forgot, eating and/or talking on the rooftop.
