    Actually happened too, that movie was pretty damn accurate. Chamberlain's charge down Little Round Top, was pure genius. Get a pride tear when I see them run down that hill into certain death, only to take the confederates by complete surprise. That stroke of tactical genius, is actually listed as a real-life situation that be derived from Desperate Ground, in The Art of War, when Sun Tzu describes the 9 different types of "ground"

    The Good, the Bad and the Ugly might deserve an honorable mention. No heroic music or hand-to-hand closeups, but still a respectable attempt at staying true-to-period, with the creative attention mainly focused on the buildup, but the actual close combat only shown from a distance and largely left to the imagination - probably since the result of the combat is not relevant to the story the movie is telling. Of course, this also adds an interesting perspective - possibly rare in cinema - where a battle is shown in some detail despite the fact that none of the main characters has any vested interest in it's outcome. And the level of detail is huge - it actually held the world record for some decades iirc, for most people ever used in the filming of a battle.

    Thomas Longrigg Theres a million things wrong with the charge of the Rohirrim. 1. No horse armor, and lets charge into a wall of pikes. Genius. 2. Only like a few of the horsemen have lances, so they're just going to get impaled by pikes until the pikeman falls down, with like 4 dead horses under his belt because that cavalry line is huge and decieded it'd be smart to charge into one ball of horsemeat. 3. No flanking was done when that much cavalry was deployed. Common sense was clearly thrown out the window.

  • @MistyGamingForLife

    @MistyGamingForLife

    8 жыл бұрын

    Demo pan Why you are wrong. 1. Considering the amount of cavalry that the Rohirrim had and how much time it would have taken to equip all of those horses with armor would have taken way too long and Minas Tirith would most likely have fallen or would be extremely close to it if they had decided too. What wall of pikes if you pay attention alot of archers were at the front line or very close to it when the cavalry arrived and the pikemen ( or pikeorcs ) were fleeing which means there pikes are facing the other way and the orcs that are not fleeing are smaller than humans ( correct me if i am wrong ) and would have been trampled by the sheer momentum and force of the charge. 2. If you look at the beginning scenes of the charge since there all grouped then, you see lots of them have spears and they would not "just gonna get impaled" because of what i said earlier. ^^^^^^^^ 3. Most likely if they would have moved troops into an effective flanking position they would have been spotted much sooner which would have giving the orcs alot of preparation time and considering the amount of forces the orcs had if the Rohirrim were to split its troops it would not have as much momentum or sheer power to push through all of the orc forces like they did. The lord of the Rings is has my favorite movies and is my favorite trilogy in it which is why i took the time to do this.

  • @bassault

    @bassault

    8 жыл бұрын

    MistyGamingForLife If the moron spent 10 more minutes to have the other half of the cavalry charge through the other side, they would have killed the orcs much quicker. Also, the rapid deployment is a valid reason for no armor, but this lack of horse armor has been seen throughout the movies. Like in the other charge at the end of the video.

    I was an extra, for the Pickett's Charge scenes, in "Gettysburg". The Charge of the 20th Maine, at Little Round Top, was what saved the Union line, and decided Lee's disastrous attack, on July 3,1863. Few people, know that Company B, took part in the charge and were the only ones who still had ammunition. They fired into the Confederate troops attacking, as Chamberlain, was counter-attacking downhill. There were also a unit of Berdan's Sharpshooters on the extreme left, as well.

Keep going like that and in a hundred years, so-called American historians will claim that we sent you a couple of parcel of food and a christmas card. At least 10 000 French soldiers were sent to America with dozens of ships. As for WWII, "I guess call it even" ? If only. Since this time you have been calling us all kinds of names (starting with "losers"), even threatening us in the past decades. French are so despised in America that having French origins or knowing the language can be used against you if you are in politics. The French are mocked and/or insulted in all American medias (TV, cinema, novels newspapers, comic-books, etc.) and still, for whatever reason I cannot fathom, if we don't stand at attention for our lords and masters, you'll cry that we "hate" you. Personnally, I'm tired of this shit. And you are welcome.

    The Charge of the Light Brigade, 1968, a film that possibly shows one of the most factually correct depictions of a 19th century cavalry charge ever made. No hype, no Hollywood bullshit, just a brutal depiction of a light cavalry brigade maintaining order under constant fire as it moved from walk, to trot, to canter, to the charge over the last 200 yards. A true depiction of history. A desperate charged made by very brave men that never questioned the order once it was given.

    @@kylestrainspotting1997 Waterloo didn’t accurately depict any of the various cavalry charges made during the battle. Waterloo stands as the only film to depict this battle, but it was poorly scripted, and poorly executed. The main players all gave great performances, but these were wasted on a poorly conceived film. Its depiction of the battle has more to do with Hollywood script writing than the accurate reality of an early 19th century battle. I really wish someone would remake the film.

    In my opinion The Ride of the Rohirrim is still the best charge in cinema history. With helms deep in top 5 .. come here always for those epic charges. But i got to give it to mel gibsons character in the patriot. For one man to turn around a retreating army and changing the tide of a crucial battle is stuff of legends

    Ironic when the two charges from 'Lord of Rings' are more historically accurate than those from 'the patriot' or 'brave heart' At least Lord of the Rings followed Tolkien's script whereas brave heart and the patriot were pure fantasy. Now that is irony for all of you who don't understand the concept.

    IMO: The battle for helms deep is ALWAYS going to be number 1 for me. That battle had everything you wanted in suspense and then the charge at the end with the music behind it. Hands down one of the best scene ever created in film. 2nd would be the scene from the last samurai, the end of that charge when the artillery commander with the pain in his face went against orders and stopped firing and everyone just bowed in respect. Both of those scenes pull at every emotion. 3rd would be the charge at Pelennor Fields with the Rohirrim. However, as epic as that charge was i've always put the battle for Helms deep higher in my list. Gladiator, Braveheart, and Batman just seem very anticlimactic. Everything else was good as well. Over all good job on the video, Great watch!

    That one was actually the most realistic one. Disorganized confusion and the officers struggling to keep everyone together in the same direction with most people doing everything they can to not be in front. In real battles things moved very slowly as it was most important to keep formation if t turned into a rabble you could get wrecked. Even cavalry charges were more like riding into range and playing pokey pokey stabbey stabbey then backing off trying to pick off people until one side had enough and retreated. Bows and arrows couldn't do much damage against even light armour except lucky exposed shots. Horse charging would do serious damage for sure but it would be suicide. Pike lines stop horses dead, you basically accomplish mangling the front line and then you are dead. Cannon balls accomplish the same thing without suiciding extremely expensive horses and trained soldiers.

Not that they used archaic weapons or there are satellite dishes or something visible in the background, just that the real life story of the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion led by Saigō Takamori is an interesting tale in its own right, and didn't end with a final mounted charge.

    Erik Roggeman technology in the hands of soldiers wins wars. It was a turning point. Japan prospered as a result. The rest of Asia had fallen to Western Colonialism. Japan adopted the ways of the Colonial powers in order to preserve itself. In so doing, they later defeated Russia and conquered all of Asia. They also gave America a black eye before finally being pounded down by two atom bombs.
